Okinawa, they fought along side the Marines attacking the Shuri line. My dad was there. Hacksaw Ridge features Desmond Doss , he was in the 77th.

30 is the absolute physical prime for men. Why anyone would think they are "old" is genuinely bewildering. 19-20 yr dudes might look buffed and maybe even shredded, but they know squat and haven't been seasoned in their muscle and bone yet. That whole thing you did on the 77th just proved that a bit of actual world knowledge as well as the physical toughness that comes with a bit of maturity is better than callow green youth.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the average age of Roman legionaries ready for major sustained combat was in their 30s too. Meaning they enlisted younger but slowly moved in hotter theaters as the Legion aged up.

Guys between their 30's and 40's and can pass physical examination seem to me like already prime candidates. 1) They more than likely have kids already, meaning they would fight like hell to return home safe. 2) They have work ethics and know how to approach a job given. 3) More life experience which can translate into unpredictable advantages in the field where every person brings their own experience into the pot. 4) They don't have that omnipotent feeling that teenagers have that can lead them to be over confident and sometimes... dead...
