Also in Italy we call it Turkish toilet. It used to be popular until the fifties I guess. I saw one recently in the courtyard of an old public housing and still used as a café's toilet. It is actually quite hygenic because only your feet touch the toilet. It also puts you in what doctors call an anatomically correct position =)

Hi there. We've got two types of toilets here in Türkiye. The usual type is referred to as the "alafranga" (from French, meaning French style) and the "alaturka" (meaning Turkish style); the one you mention is the second type. They're equally common in most restrooms I'd say because like you said people believe the alaturka toilet is healthier, cleaner, etc. Also as you know we do use our hands and water to wipe, as a side note. That's why we've also got water pipes going in the alafranga type of toilet.

When I was a kid, “Turkish toilets”or as we call them “a la turca toilets” were more common in homes, and because of the naming I always thought these existed only in Turkey. In time, toilets that we call “a la franca toilettes” became more common, I think there is no a la turca toilets in newly built houses nowadays.
