79-04 Mustang Budget Brake Upgrade! No Spindle Modification!

A video not only showing an obtainable budget brake upgrade for any 79-04 mustang, but also the only video showing the complete installation without skipping any of the more difficult steps. This could be done in just a single afternoon and will make a huge difference in brake performance without killing your bank account. 99% of the parts are available on rock auto and at the time of writing this description, all parts can be obtained all for less than $800. Some 17" wheels will just manage to fit these brakes, however 18" wheels are recommended. As pointed out by a viewer, if you are doing this on a 79-93 car you will need to upgrade to sn95 spindles. A trip to the junkyard is most likely your best bet as they are currently super expensive on ebay (over $250 a set used!)

2015 Cadillac ATS:
Front left and front right HD calipers
Front brake pads w/hardware (i used powerstop)
1997 Mustang cobra (4.6 DOHC listing on rock auto):
2 front rotors (13")
powerstop flex hoses (p/n BH00007)
1997 mustang gt:
Rear rotors
Rear brake pads
1997 ford taurus:
Both rear calipers
The only other parts needed for this upgrade is the installation kit available from S&S engineering, they can be found on Facebook and typically reply in just a couple of hours. They use paypal for the transaction which is one of the safest ways to pay a business at this time. At the time of this video the kit from them is $175 shipped to the lower 48 states.

How did you clearance the pad overhang? S&S also has an adapter bracket to get you a gt500 rear rotor (13inch) to fit with stock caliper

I didn't clearance the overhang at all, if it becomes an issue I'll just knock the pad down with a die grinder and a roloc disc. I've seen others use a 14" front rotor with the same kit I'm currently using.

Any issues with performance since install? And can you tell a big difference from the SN 95 stock brakes?

No issues with the performance at all! They grab a ton better than my factory brakes did and are much more useful. When I first drove the car I basically had manual brakes since my engine dosent make much for vaccum, which resulted in standing on the brake pedal to come to a basic stop in traffic since the factory pedal ratio is not ideal for it. Since adding these I can stop much better and with my vaccum brake pump it's a night and day difference!

What brake pads do you have to buy after the swap

I used front brake pads from a 2015 Cadillac ATS with the heavy duty braking option, and regular sn95 rear brake pads.

I have a 94 GT, do I use the same brake hoses your listed For this swap?

Yes you would use the same brake hoses on any mustang 94-98, do note that the soft lines are side specific because one hard line fitting is bigger than the other. I recently did a 5 lug conversion with this brake setup with a different brand of hoses and didn't care for the way they connected to the caliper in comparison to the powerstop ones I used, and the powerstop ones come with both sizes of banjo bolts included so you don't have to run to the store and find one to fit the Cadillac calipers.

Are you using a 7.5 rear axle or 8.8 ?

My car has a junkyard 8.8 out of an 01 Mustang GT, which is what you see in this video (I wanted a specific gear ratio/wider rear end/LSD). However, rear brakes are the same between the 7.5 and 8.8 on fox and sn95 cars. If you already have a disc brake 7.5, everything will swap over to the 8.8. If you wanted to do this same setup on a 7.5, no issues either.

Absolutely right! I completely forgot about the foxes being 4 lug, most I see are already on SN95 spindles. I'm gonna update my description. Thanks for pointing that out!
