Pyramidal Keepsake Box
Anyone who has watched our previous videos knows who Sai is. She is my youngest daughter and is now 14 years old. She has been working with me in the workshop since we first started making videos. In fact, she actually helped build the workshop, from digging and leveling the ground to putting shingles on the roof.
Recently one of our viewers, Joey, decided to hire her for a commissioned project. He said she could choose the project and type of wood, he just wanted to see her have the opportunity to get a job of her own.
Sai decided that she wanted to make a keepsake box, but something different from what we had built before. She chose to make a frustum shaped box. A frustum is a pyramid with the top cut off. She also wanted to use splines and give it a decorative handle.
Her wood choices were Bolivian Rosewood and Quilted Maple.
She did the design work completely on her own and she did the vast majority of the woodworking. She is a pretty skilled woodworker, especially at her age. She has been woodworking for several years, but still there are a few types of cuts that we don’t let her do yet. So for those we helped out.
So, here it is. Sai’s first commissioned project. A pyramidal keepsake box made with Bolivian Rosewood and Quilted Maple. And many thanks to out viewer Joey! Sai was so very happy!

Thank you so much. That is very kind. The main reason that we do this work today is so that my wife and I can spend all day with the girls. We actually have 5 daughters, and all of them except Sai have grown up & moved out, but we all still do woodworking together almost every day. The older ones come over, and our middle daughter, Maya, does this Woodworking here as a full time job.

I’d help with any project and now he “supervises while I work” lol. Taught me so many skills. As an architectural designer by trade and woodworker hobbies it’s great to see you learning such valuable skills. We need more women in both fields.

Nice work Sai you did an excellent job. Have you ever used a dye over figured maple instead of a stain..? If you try it use a good dye you mix with water. After it dries lightly sand with 320 - 400 just to remove the raised grain from the water. Then spray about 8-10 light coats of high gloss watco lacquer... The figure will look sick..!

NICE JOB, SAI!!!! What a great design - it is elegant and simple at the same time. IMHO, the proportion was too tall as well. I just want to point out that it is very difficult to get a box perfectly square and have a lid fit either way - especially full full miter corners - which are difficult to get aligned perfectly. That is a true sign of a great woodworker. Kudos to Sai. I really like that you all enjoy this hobby as a family - my dad and I really enjoyed doing projects together. Step out of your shell, Sai, and do the voiceover next time. You have a voice, too. It would have been nice to hear your thoughts on getting your first commission - in your own words.

Bolivian rosewood is really pretty. I wish I could use it again. The first time I had a rash on my throat and chest that ached. The second time was a full blown flu-like reaction that lasted for days. Next time I'm sure I'll be pushing up daisies. Be careful with this stuff.

BTW a faster but just as safe method of work when you need a stop block on the fence.... Clamp a stop block to the fence, then adjust the fence with the stop block to the correct thickness. Just make sure to clamp the stop block to the fence as far away from the front of the blade as possible ( so that your work piece doesn't touch both the blade and the stop block at the same time).

Hi Leon, they vary quite a bit depending on what wood species and what size. There are 10 different exotic species and 4 domestics. And there are 3 sizes of Mallet. So there are hundreds of possibilities. They can range from $60 - $200, but if you use the code: CHRISTMAS at checkout, you will get it for 1/2 price! Check them out here! kingsfinewoodworking.com/collections/thors-hammer-woodworking-mallets
