Someone actually tried to steal my new bike with this on it as I noticed that the rubber layer had saw-marks appear on it. Only managed to scrape and peel the rubber though - the metal is barely untouched so I'm definitely pleased. Not a fan of the bright colors in these heavy-duty locks as they kinda scream "look at me", but other than that I can definitely recommend this one. You can get a mini one to put in your pocket, and change out the crimping end tool with the rebar cutter end and get a small concealable hydraulic mini bolt cutters. @TWX11385 жыл бұрын
The biggest issue with power tools are the obviousness of using them for theft. Your bandsaw may be quieter than a battery-operated angle grinder, and it may be small for a bandsaw, it's not exactly small or readily concealed. A small angle grinder might be able to fit into a large coat pocket well enough for it to not be seen until it's taken out for use, but your bandsaw isn't even going to conceal well under a trenchcoat. Then there's the issue of time spent trying to align the bandsaw to the lock to cut it when it's locking up a bike. The bandsaw is going to be much more limited compared to the angle grinder in how it can be applied to the lock, requiring a fair amount of clearance on both sides of the lock. A bike with baskets or other bolt-on accessories might prevent that bandsaw from having that clearance while an angle grinder doesn't require a whole lot more clearance than a human arm and hand needs to use the lock to begin with. This lock is almost 11/16" thick. It would increase the time for either tool to cut it, and that might be enough to cause a thief to seek a different bike.
@wileecoyoti5 жыл бұрын
Machinist answer: If the shack is truly hardened (sure looks that way) then the bandsaw blade is almost certainly going to wear out before you get through both sides of this thing. Tool has to be harder than the work piece, so you're looking at carbide or an abrasive to have much luck. Good thought though!

A little curious about the hydraulic cutters - they look similar to what is usually used to cut steel rebar - while often larger in diameter than a shackle, rebar is definitely not hardened. Watching the cutters themselves fail in a ductile manner (i.e., bending out of the way) it seems unlikely that this particular tool is meant to cut hardened steel. As a metallurgist, I would expect much harder blades, that would tend to fail in a more brittle manner (i.e., chip/crack) - these look like perhaps they have been case hardened (i.e., the surface has been hardened) but are not a tool steel or something along those lines (certainly not a carbide cutter). I am wondering if the failure of the tool here is more of a case of the wrong tool for the job than anything else - similar to the analogy in a previous video of using a bolt cutter designed to cut hardened steel vs. one designed to cut copper or aluminum conductors. This video seems to be more of a demonstration of how case hardened steel is no match for a properly hardened shackle. As the hydraulic cutter videos have been coming along, I have been wanting to advise using a scatter shield of some sort to protect from "shrapnel" from when the cutters shatter when they do meet something they can't handle - obviously not the issue with these, though, as they bend rather than snap.

That settles it. This is my new lock. Hard to pick because of its odd keyset, and hard enough to resist cutting. On Guard is hit or miss and many have flaws other than picking or destroying, such as the Bulldog being susceptible to water damage, and the keys on all of them break the heads off because they are just molded plastic, but with the shackle housing I suspect this will resist the seizing I got with the Bulldog.
@declan7655 жыл бұрын
I think this a great thing you do. The jaws of the cutter are massive and you would need ample room to get it between a bike, post and whatever else in inside the shackle. Perhaps a pipe to slide over the shackle that's bigger then the jaws would be good. Sure they can cut the pipe and such but it's added time and pain.

Such blades will be significantly more expensive.

One market of KZbin that you could capitalize on, is "real world cutting". Nobody cuts these chains and locks in the "field" where conditions are not ideal. For example even with a battery operated die grinder or angle grinder, if the chain or lock has no resistance (not locked down in a vice) it will either be impossible, or at minimum extremely difficult to cut without proper support to hold it still. This is what everyone wants to see. What locks and chains will be the most difficult in real world scenarios to cut. We know nothing is cut proof in controlled settings, but what will give a theif using forced attacks the most problems in the field?

If there are three things at your disposal would you try this again? Test A 1. Torch it to red hot, 2. Splash cold water on red hot surface, 3, hydraulic press cut again Test B 1. Torch it to red hot, 2. Cover red hot surface with fiber glass few inches deep until it is cooled off. 3, hydraulic press cut again What do you think?

Wow. Did not expect any u lock to withstand hydraulic press. Great video! Please keep up the great work!! 👍🏻 Can you get harder blades for the press? 👍🏻 👍🏻 Could you please try a cordless grinder on that lock? 👌

For those few people who berate him for making videos like this, I'd like to say, "Now that is one of the reasons why LPL makes these videos. Consumer education."
@modelsfirst5 жыл бұрын
Absoultly. And it puts pressure on lock makers to up their game to increase the security of their locks.

LPL does something we all love and commerce machine hates - show us the truth, so we can make educated choices for quality stuff. LPL keep going like this.

Finally a hardened shackle that is actually hardened. I come across many locks that say hardened and their not. I feel it's Flat out false advertisement but I guess they don't have to specify how hard.

So there is a light at the end of the security tunnel after all! Snuff it out with a picking session! 😈

Do you think you could get a set of jaws hardened to just past the hardness of the lock? If you go to the right metal shop, they'll have an indent tester to let you know how hard the lock actually is, then either they (or some other youtuber, perhaps) could heat-treat the jaws past that value. (Actually, maybe you could an indent tester for yourself - it could be an interesting bit of info to provide for "hardened" shackles on all types of lock)

I'm thinking Fresh Blades and a cut on the curved part of the shackle might make a difference. Also at least 2 cuts at right angles to each other might do it. Fresh blades might cut, while worn blades will crush.

As expected, boltcuters blades are to soft steel, or old or new blades wood makes no diference at all.For cuting that U-Lock, you need blades with HRC 55 or more.

This device has replaceable blades, so they aren't too old. (Someone has already requested some rockwell files to check the hardness.)
@CrazyBikerGuy5 жыл бұрын
The blades in it have only been used once. He replaces them often for the videos. Deffently needs a harder blade but hey the shackle stood up to the common theif if they nicked a pair of these
@ShinobiDiabolik5 жыл бұрын
there is inconsistency in blades. these bent, showing as not hard, next set of blades on 797 will brake showing they are hard.

This shackle looks like it is at or approaching Pewag Security Chain hardness: www.brindleychains.co.uk/collections/pewag-security-chains @LockPickingLawyer would love to see Chains put to these croppers after you've completed this great series.

The issue I see with this test is that you've already used those blades several times and they're definitely not in the same condition they were when knew. I don't know how easy/cheap it is to find replacement blades but I'd like to see the test performed with new blades.
