Thank you all for your supportive comments towards the crew of QF72. It was a science fiction scenario that became a reality; confused computers using automation to harm rather than protect our aircraft, crew and passengers. I see there are many technical questions here and I recommend you read the book I have written on this flight entitled, "No Man's Land". I talk in depth about the flight, what went wrong, what went right, the heroic actions of the passengers and crew, and the investigation into the causes of the accident. I was hoping that our event would be the last accident involving bad automation, but the recent 737 MAX accidents have indicated that we have a long way to go. Sadly, there are many similarities in these tragic aviation events. Thank you for your continued support. Captain Sullivan

The faulty data came from one of the ADIRU unit from Northrop Grumman. The aircraft can be flown without them and they can be switched of. In this case a software bug let some faulty data slip through to the flight control software. The Airbus goes from Normal Law (with stall protection) to alternate or directly law which lack stall protection and the pilot simply flies them as normal. The faults in the units themselves were detected by other parts of the system and self disconnected, though not without some extremely violent pitch down manoeuvres.

@Acecool5 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't. I look at skill, training and intelligence. I don't care if the person is wearing a suit, or jeans and a hoodie if they know what they're doing. Veteran pilots have likely seen situations that trained pilots haven't been subjected to in simulations, and they may have more skill in those areas - but those situations aren't always the issue. Having knowledge of more situations is definitely beneficial, but training and common sense / intelligence is king. One aircraft when down because an idiot twenty-something was pulling back on the joystick of an airbus during a stall... Somehow he thought pitching up would increase his speed... Instead, it helped slow the craft even more, until it was dropping like a rock. Once it reached terminal velocity at that angle of attack, they wouldn't have felt like they were falling any longer. Then, the captain comes in, and hears what the idiot was doing and says no.. But, by that time they were moments from impact. We need to remove idiots from the cockpit... The lack of simple common sense is a huge problem... Also, simulate more situations. Also, give the pilots more control over the electrical systems to prevent, or extinguish electrical fires.... When a fuse doesn't blow, have an intelligent system which shows when erroneous signals are sent - whether through ground wires and hot wires to data / signal wires. Or, automate that. An electrical fire is incredibly easy to extinguish, simply cut the fuel and if it hasn't started burning other things, then it won't continue. Introduce more automation... If the Airbus computer had more control, it could've prevented the one idiot from crashing the plane into the ocean by continuing to force the stall instead of escaping the stall. Of course, training could've prevented that too, as could common sense... That guy shouldn't have been in the pilots seat - he wasn't ready. And he was insane as he was doing the same thing for a prolonged period, expecting a different result. He shouldn't have bought into it completely, and should've realized a 1000 different ways that pulling back wouldn't help.

No captain ever wants to be piloting a plane that's going down. Even in an outcome like this, where everyone survived, that's still extremely traumatic. Even Sully said that he has PTSD after landing flight 1549 on the Hudson. Everyone handles trauma differently, and while Sully was able to fly for a few more years and then retire, Kevin realized that he was too badly affected by PTSD to feel safe holding passengers lives in his hands again. This is what we have to look forward to as autonomous driving develops. There will be unknown levels of problems like the layers of an onion. The most serious ones will cause deaths but be resolved quickly. Each problem layer of the onion will take longer and longer to happen, will result in deaths, and be fixed. As each problem is solved, the technology will get safer and safer, but not before technology kills people. That being said, flawless computer hardware with flawless sensors and flawless software will be much safer than human drivers. But there lies the problem. Airplanes have OBVIOUSLY not yet attained that level of flawlessness. Cars will undergo the same evolution. Its actually worse with cars due to proximity to other cars and structures. Small errors in airplanes will not produce a crash. Small errors in cars will.

One difference is that most car drivers are worse than useless in an out of control car, but a trained and experienced pilot is not, in an out of control plane. So there's way more of a case for always allowing a pilot to take control. Less so for cars. So, you're quite possibly right Jim. However, Tesla cars are already safer, on average, than human controlled cars, and their database of driving experiences for machine learning is expanding exponentially, with way, way more data than for planes, and still allows human override, from which the AI learns.

From one Kevin to another, your professionalism and calm in the face of potential tragedy was amazing. I find it incredulous that Fuzzy was left out in the cold and Diana could not even speak because of Qantas. I have been on several flights in which pilots made mistakes, and then tried to tell the passengers that something else caused the problem. I know in my heart that you would never do this. Which passengers treated Captain Sullivan badly? Capt Sullivan thought some of the passengers were looking at him, blaming him for their children’s injuries, but that was him thinking that. Some may have felt that way momentarily, but I am sure none said it, because they would have also realised he saved their lives. It is far more likely it was Capt Sullivan projecting his own feeling of guilt onto his passengers. He really didn’t need to feel guilt, but humans don’t always think rationally.

Captain Kevin Sullivan’s recently released book called No Man’s Land was written by him to record events and the story of QF72. He wrote it to honour all his crew and passengers and to fill in any blanks from the event for anyone who was on board the flight. Captain Sullivan is also an ongoing strong advocate about the dangers of automation and pilots being trained for loss of control in flight. Every crew member at Qantas would like to see this crew officially honoured and Fuzzy compensated. I would really like to see a reunion of passengers and crew with national media celebrating this great story. Celebration, recognition, hugging one another again and raising glasses in a toast with media coverage would be a very healing event. I hope I see this happen soon. They are all total heroes.
