It was a beautiful courageous gesture for the Algerian passengers, many of them devout Muslims, to stay aboard, turning down the terrorists offer to leave because they feared the French passengers would be executed if they exited the aircraft, demonstrating that the vast majority of humanity are good, regardless of faith. Peter, this happened in 1994. Back then, they didn't use those things on planes. They didn't even lock the cockpit. The captain was considered God to the co-pilot and navigator. They couldn't relieve the captain of his duties. He made the rules he called the shots. If you didn't like it, tough. Today, that has changed. Since 9/11, that all has changed. The co-pilot or navigator can relieve the captain at any time they feel the need, too. They are armed, and the cockpit is now locked.
