Roger Daltrey: Behind the madness, the mayhem and the great music of The Who | True Stories

The Who were the archetypal rock band - their crazy alcohol and drug-fuelled benders on and off stage set the bar for all those who followed. Behaviour so appalling that when they toured down under back in 1968, then prime minister John Gorton banned them from Australia forever. Now lead singer Roger Daltrey is spilling the beans on the madness, the mayhem and all that great music.

The situation was that during "The best I ever had" he holds the "the best I ever haaaaaaaaaaaad" and he goes on forever and i was trying to go along and he was like "go on you can do it" i gave up airless, he laughed! ❤

The one of the origiional loveliest man around still today in rock n roll.... Roger Dultrey. Always brilliant always talented and ever the stylish show man. Who still treats fans like old friends. Even if they accidently run into him . like i did. He and Pete, John and Keith were destined to change the world with that music and they have and still do. Young people love the music noe as much if not more than their parents and even some grandparents.. Shows with a rich tapesty of fans of all ages , walks of life and parts of the world. I couny myself amoung the fans. Keith Moon and John Bonham were the two reasons i took up playing drums. Im 48 in 2 weeks. And i still play drums. Music .... Good proprt music like this dosent see age or other things. Only sees what makes people enjoy it. Songs everyone knows. And sings the lyrics perfectly too. And oh man. Id never stop loving The Who. I was fortunate to see them in 1977, when Keith Moon was still with us. Awesome show. Saw them again in the early eighties, and although it was a good show, I missed the unpredictably that Keith Moon brought. 1977 was one hell of a year I had, regarding concerts. The Who, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin. The Who cost $8, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, $10. I remember thinking $10! What’s this world coming to??

Roger didn't write ANYTHING on Tommy. It was mostly Pete with a song thrown in by Keith and a few thrown in by John. Gotta love it when the Press have no idea what they're talking about and do little to no research. The Who were an incredible band and, at LEAST, deserve the respect of some effort into getting your facts straight.

A lot of inaccuracies here. Moon was on an antialcohol medication which caused him to vomit when he drank. He drank until he passed out anyway. Unconscious, he choked to death on his own vomit. The Ox didn't overdose on cocaine, however, it did play a role in his death. After decades of abuse, he had a heart attack. Roger may not have had a drug habit, but he drank right along with the rest of the lads. Also, someone slipped acid into their drinks at Woodstock, so he had at least one acid trip. And Daltrey most certainly did not write Tommy, or any of the other major works. Townsend was the songwriter and composer. That's why Daltrey tried a solo career. He did OK, but it was in the Who that he found his greatest financial and creative success.:)

@@memorialled_zeppelin-warew1346 - too bad that you weren't there to tell the Who that in the 1960s; the Who thought about it all the time. Pete Townsend was well aware that Jimi Hendrix stole most of his stage show from the Who, and you can see what he had done about it, if you watch the Woodstock movie. The Who's real response came after the Woodstock festival, in the album "Who's Next," one of the best Rock albums EVER. Woodstock wasn't a Who show; to get an idea of what that was like, listen to the album, "Live at Leeds"- they really did sound like that.

@@DavidSmith-ss1cg ... Yes and yes. And ive seen the Woodstock footage. Its aawesome Hendrix liked Townshends guitar smash so much he copied it... We all know that. Pete wasnt and still isnt offended. I have told Roger and Pete numerous times i think their better than The Beatles. I have seen them play and worked with them as a roadie on several occasions with photographic proof. Both of them thought it was interesting i said that. Neither agreed but were very flattered. Both Roger and Pete are good people. Funny as hell and very interesting to work with. And they both love thier fans very much. Pete tends to be very casual and unbothered by fans. He'll talk to them. He dosent talk much but he gets across to anyone who listens that he has a deep love for the fans. Rogers far more outgoing and funny. Wild sence of humor. He will generally talk the hing leg off a donkey. Hes the easier of the two to talk too. But both of them are worth trying to talk to. They are very good. And have aged well in the music Industry that swallows wanna bes for breakfast. Im a drummer and bass player (mostly studio work). It was these guys and Led Zep that got me wanting to play.

@@sillysausage4549 That was exactly point. The interviewer says "Much later Daltrey would turn that youthful frustration into the ground breaking rock opera, Tommy". The reporter is crediting Roger with creating Tommy. I think she is being very misleading and I think Pet would care. In every interview I have seen with Townsend, he has always guarded his talent closely and always made a point of letting everyone know how good he is on the guitar and who was responsible for writing the music, where and how it was conceived etc. That's why I said, I wonder how Pet feels about that as he wrote it and I think he would care. I should point out that I'm not criticizing Daltrey, who would not have known about the later overdub comment by the reporter...
