I hope you enjoy this weeks episode. I've tried to include some alternative designs that don't immediately spring to mind when making a list of this kind. I'd love to hear what cars you think are in the category of 'Future Classic'! Let me know below which cars you think are worth getting hold of (if you don't mind sharing your tips!). Enjoy! Frank

The Polestar 1 I think will be a future classic. Just look at it! The Rimac Nevera as well will probably be another classic, as a pioneer of the electric hypercar. If you want an affordable option, the new Honda E will definitely be a classic as well. Edit: The new Defender and new Mazda 3 as well. Maybe for some older options there's the Boxster and maybe the Vauxhall VX220. Another edit: The Toyota GT86 and the MX-5 are definitely going to be classics. Edit 3: The Peugeot RCZ is a really interesting car for not a lot and the newer Scirocco looked really sharp.

I think the Mercedes S65 coupé will become a future classic. Or the S-Class coupé in general, but paired with an AMG V12? Well it will be extremely desirable. I also think the F80 M3 could become a future classic considering the direction BMW is moving towards at the moment. It's a sporty, light RWD sedan with subtle styling and an amazing Inline-6. The new M3 is just over engineered and way too heavy in my opinion. I definitely agree on the R32 Golf and the E38 BMW

Glad to see the CR-Z finally getting some love on this site. The design of the dashboard still outclasses some cars 10x its price. I'd also say that while the current Mazda 3 (2019-) isn't yet cheap enough to make this list, it's certainly a future design classic. With its shoulderless flowing silhouette and the funhouse-mirror-esque side panels that bring the surface to life once in motion, Mazda has found a style that is truly unique without being garish or overly aggressive like so many other automakers. The rear light signature is very recognizable and truly fitting for a cute little rounded out city car, while also giving off an air of precise performance. The interior is elegantly and thoughtfully crafted with the controls and infotainment feeling effortlessly integrated into one continuous piece of sculpture. And on top of its excellent design, I think that in 10 years we'll look back on it as Mazda's first step into moving upmarket, giving it historical significance as well. And I'm not just saying all that because I own one...😉

MINI Hatch years 2000-2006. This design captured the spirit of 'Cool Brittania' at the end of the 1990s. It was inspired by, but not a pastiche of the original. It remains a charming design after all this time. It is both at once Brit pop, and Savile Row.

I'd agree for the supercharged coupe, seems like a good deal. Plenty of power and good looking (shared platform with aston martin). However, unlike with aston, no manual were offered with the ford' sourced v8. Reliability is questionable at best. The second gen also had its problem, they went with an alluminium chassis but cheaped out on the subframes that rot away faster than a late 90's mazda

@@yoshi879 Any BMW In-line 6, turbo or not turbo are the best motors ever. Mechanics I know will say it’s the best motor ever and the reason I bought my 2011 E90 323i over the F30 is because I just couldn’t get over the fact they had gotten rid of the small inline 6s in place of 4 cylinders. That's the beauty of it because when we agree we may shout "yes, nice one" as I did on a few of these. I do think you are a bit out with your values. One is obvious, Porsche always go up. But what I really love about this is you are not falling for stereotypical cliche like say Italian cars. You are not judging by badge but by design and that is what I love about this one. Honda is a great shout and gets on with stuff, they take risks and have great designs. Well recognised. I owned a Brera 2.2 petrol but found it a bit wide (lucky I will never be able to afford a Ferrari) and pretty heavy. It was lovely to look at and had a tobacco and blue interior. I was in high school when it first came out and I was in love with the car. The CR-Z with the Mugen kit...just right. Bisimoto tuning with the turbos and stuff got it up to 500hp, but at least 200 hp would've matched the looks and weight. Now I think I would just spend my money on a Hilux or something utilitarian but damn if it wasn't an underrated car...the hybrid system probably made some people also look somewhere else.

Hi Frank! Chuffed I am that you mention the Brera! I own the V6 version and am not disappointed with the performance at all. Its four wheel drive system keeps it glued to the road surface and makes it a tremendous joy to drive, especially on mountainous roads. Love it to bits and intend to keep it as long as I can! Beware of timing chain issues though ;) Cheers!

Quite happy with my C6, seeing as I only paid £750 for it! Two years down the line, values on them have dropped further, though I can't see how they'll drop much more. They only made 23,000 of them. The number surviving in the UK is in the hundreds, and less than a thousand ever found homes here. I love it, it feels so special.

I'm not sure about the Astra, but I think the rest are pretty spot on. Even the Z4, which stylistically I dislike, has matured nicely, and having had the opportunity to take a M one on track in anger, they drive great. Prices are a completely different story here in the US where these are all 2x, but that doesn't necessarily make them any less of a value from this standpoint, I suppose.

Great episode! Btw, I was working at GM Europe Design in Rüsselsheim while the Opel/Vauxhall Astra GTC was designed (as 3D-modeler and I did wheels and logos for the Astra "J"). I can tell you that at first it had an even more extremely raked windshield, almost like a Lamborghini Gallardo(!). Always loved this car, even if it got a bit more sensible as production model... Also - I have always had a craving to own a Citroën C6 sometime, even though I don´t really need such a big car and prefer hot hatches. Coolest luxury sedan ever.

There are quite a few "ugly" car designs, such as the Fiat Multipla, that I feel have huge amounts of potential but have made a few mistakes and needed one or two significant changes to make them design classics. I'd very much enjoy a series on cars that are "Nearly Classics" obviously starting with the multipla, or perhaps the Chrysler Crossfire. Thanks for the insights

I would say the first gen Volvo S40 from 1995-2004 (especially the facelift). Everyone gives credit to the V40 estate (which is understandable, the thing is beautiful) but I feel the sedan is underrated. It's just such a beautifully clean design with the proportions done right, very well balanced. My sister had one, it was so comfortable and that 1.8 turbo 4 cylinder had a nice engine note to it and was remarkably fuel efficient. Oh yeah and the seat warmer was the best I've ever used in any car.

I really like the Megane 2nd gen. That back end was really interesting when it launched and I think it still looks good today. The 2nd gen Laguna is also a pretty sedan with great proportions and a hatchback. And another french car - the 406 Coupe - styled and built by Pininfarina if I remember corectly. For fast cars: The Alfa Romeo 147 GTA (with the v6). Actually all Alfas with the GTA badge are pretty damn quick (including the Brera). The Seat Leon (2nd gen) FR or Cupra, if you can find one in decent shape. (Designed by Walter de Silva after he jumped ship from Alfa Romeo, I like most of his cars before Audi and VW).
