Being in decent shape beforehand makes all the difference in the world. In the past, I had some miserable hikes because I wasn't in good shape. After learning that lesson the hard way, I stay in shape, and it's so much more enjoyable. 100% agree on that one.

Those Solomon boots are awesome for winter backpacking. Totally agree

I got one I think you’re going to add to your next one of things you’re right about after you try it. Carrying a puffy jacket isn’t necessary at all. If you carry a rain jacket, mid layer and a beanie to sleep in you have a versatile layering system that will be as warm as a puffy jacket, cheaper since you already have it and lightens your pack. It’s also not only useful when at camp which is all a puffy is good for, you also won’t be so worried about it at a camp fire. Keep up these great videos and all the best in 2023

As a senior backpacker, I strongly agree with your conditioning comments. Time in the gym keeps you on the trail having more fun and injury free.

I once went on a trip and decided to make my pack as light as possible. Guess what was the one thing I missed more than anything. It wasn’t the extra tent stake when one of mine broke, nor was it my camp shoes after a 15 mile day, it wasn’t even my snacks when food got low. It was that stupid chair!

Ha! I looked super nerdy today because I had my 12 pound backpack on as I did a hike in town with wicked elevation gain. Gotta get my endurance up! You’re so right about that. I’ve lost some weight since I started backpacking a year ago and when I weigh myself with my backpack on, even tho it’s heavier than I would like, I gotta remind myself that one year ago I weighed more than I weigh now with my pack on. :)

That's such a great way to look at it! I've been losing weight hiking too, I started running a year ago but regular hiking is what made all the difference :)

Switching to waterproof boots in the winter is fine if you're just hiking. If you're going for an overnight, you really need to pair it with a vapor barrier. I just use plastic bread bags, specifically the english muffin or bagel bags between my liner and wool socks. The liners get soaking wet but the wool socks and the insulation in your winter boot stays dry.

Good information. I'll stick to my evo boots for winter. I always twist my ankle with low-ankle boots, well only with snowshoes mostly .

Hell yay ! Carry the chair ! 👊🏼 i thru hiked the AT in 2021 everyone made fun of my chair at the beginning, by the time i hit Harpers ferry my entire tramily had started carrying chairs. Yep! Carry it

Just curious…I bought the Zpacks mini stakes, they cost a bit less than the mini Groundhogs and they had great reviews so that’s what I bought. They are very blue with an orange string, and I have no complaints. Do you folks have an opinion on those stakes?
@elr05 Жыл бұрын
That’s what I use now, too. I have no complaints and I’ve used them in different types of ground and conditions.

Chairs and physical conditioning. How about a combination thereof? When you’re 61 years old and have to roll out of that Helinox chair because it’s so low to the ground and your worn out, aching joints and jelly belly won’t let you stand straight up? It’s embarrassing to a degree. But that chair is so much easier on the butt than a log or a rock or the ground. Catch 22.

Thank you both for your insights for better backpacking tips. You were right about backpacking chairs! I absolutely LOVE my Helinox Chair Zero! Wouldn't go on a hiking/backpacking trip without it. I also have the Nitecore NU25 (made my own shockcord headband). Great little headlamp! I've been using Nitecore headlamps for caving for almost 30 years as they have super lights. I do need to get the MSR Groundhog Mini Stakes (on my to do list).

I love my bot it was spendy compared to a Gelato container but it holds water much better and you could use it to melt snow in a pinch if your cold soaking even if it's with a twig fire and like you said you can add to the water capacity. I like my nitecore lamp too if I were to hike strictly at night I'd like more light but for normal uses its perfect I haven't gotten into the chair game but I may if I plan on doing some dogless trips with the dog I have to leave some things back at home so I can carry extra water and food and 1st aid for him I do agree with the conditioning dosome extra walking before hand maybe some walking lunges or do day hikes with a loaded bag before I took my dog hiking I started doing 6-9 mile walks with him for walks to get his pads conditioned as far as boots go I've used my super spendy boots I got for wildland firefighting and they are way better than my trail runners for snow hiking in my opinion and experiance everything youve said is totally right in my mind

Huge Dutchware fan, own 2 Chameleons and I agree with you guys on them. Have you tried their bonded xenon tarps? The seams are bonded, not sewn, so no seam sealing is required and they will never leak. Truly revolutionary

The guy that fell and couldn't get up, what if it was worse than that? Like in water. I agree totally with the physical condition and the chair. You guys have been right about clothing options as well. I have to say I own a couple clothing items because of you guys. Like the Patagonia Houdini I believe. OR gloves etc. Happy Trails 👣

Prefer Big Agnes slightly lighter 6" Dirt Dagger Tent Stakes, but MSR's aren't horrible. Chairs are ridiculous, but since they are your signature gear, will give it a pass.
