Rage 2 is out on May 14th, but are Avalanche and id Software a match made in FPS heaven? Matthew grabs his shotgun, limbers up for a Nantotrite slam and steps into a world gone mad. From big guns to the small campaign length, we look at the best and worst features in the final game.
Rock Paper Shotgun will have a written Rage 2 review in due course. This is the RPS video team Rage 2 review - a Rage 2 PC review, to be specific - and we’ve been waiting for this one for a while. Ever since we did our Rage 2 impressions piece ( • Gravity Guns, Gyrocopt... ) we’ve been hoping this one would come together. When we look at Rage 2 weapons, particularly that shotgun, we can see the id impact shining through, but we wanted to see what Avalanche would bring to the Rage 2 map.
The map size is chunky - about 10km2, give or take some knobbly bits - but is there enough to do? Weirdly the Rage 2 campaign length is one of the shorter examples we’ve seen in an open world game - it’s technically just eight missions surrounded by a mountain of side content. We break it down in our detailed Rage 2 test. And does the map deliver enough interesting activities for Rage 2 vehicles? Or will you spend the whole game avoiding the roads on a gyrocopter?
As always, we don’t go into detailed technical breakdowns unless it’s required - this Rage 2 PC gameplay shows it running on a GTX 1070ti - we are going to have a full technical Rage 2 PC analysis over on Rock Paper Shotgun: The Site, so I’ll post a link to that when it is live. This Rage 2 gameplay PC should hopefully give an idea of its technical standard - it’s much less of a mess than last year’s Just Cause 4, which was not a great advert for Avalanche’s Apex engine.
Speaking of Just Cause 4, I mentioned in the video that I had issues with that series and the way it used novelty gadgetry to spice up quite mundane action. The idea is explored much more eloquently by the excellent Hamish Black in his video Just Cause 4: The Problem With Chaos. Check it out here: • Just Cause 4: The Prob... . Maybe one day we will make a smart video like this.
In the meantime, enjoy this Rage 2 verdict video - it’s quite a sprawling beast of a game, and hard to pin down, so I hope it’s not too rambling or disjointed. If you have any questions about Rage 2, I’ll be happy to answer them - whether it’s something you need explaining further from the review, or something not covered. Want me to wax lyrical about the Rage 2 shotgun? I can do that. Want a better idea of Rage 2’s upgrades? Ask away. Want to know how long is Rage 2 campaign? That’s in the video. Please watch it. Want to tell me off for playing Rage 2 with a controller? Please don’t. I got plenty of Rage 2 kills with a chunky plastic pad in my mitts, so it’s not a problem.
If you enjoyed this video, why not watch some of Rock Paper Shotgun’s other efforts? I recently went hands on with Code Vein and made a video about custom hats ( • Boss Fights, Hat Custo... ) and ahead of A Plague Tale’s release tomorrow, I got a first look at a new level in a PC build, so watch that too ( • Rat Armies, Alchemy An... ). If you enjoyed this video I’d love it if you subscribed to Rock Paper Shotgun and gave the video a thumbs up. It’s the only thing that makes me happy. Apart from Rage 2’s shotgun, naturally. Thanks for watching.

Hello! There's a bit in the video where i talk about the troublesome key bindings for the powers - I've just found an option that let's you instant cast them (without holding down ctrl) which makes it much more keyboard-friendly. So worry not!

It just lets you bind powers to single key presses, rather than having to hold ctrl, which was what caused difficulty. You can map them as you see fit - number keys seem to work well.

It's been a long time since I've seen a review (print or video) from a gaming organisation that's really resonated with me. I have a select few review channels I follow who I feel I've got a "rapport" with, and whose experiences I know I can relate to how I'll personally feel about a game. This review is just excellent, though. I feel like it shows and tells me all the things I need to know to form my own opinion of whether I'll like the game or not. It doesn't tell me whether I should like the game or not - that's for me to decide - it just highlights the things I should consider. I appreciate the mention of other games as frames of reference, too. I haven't played every game meniioned in the review, but being able to relate things back to the games I have played is very useful. While games should be reviewed on their own merits to some degree, they don't exist in a vacuum, and it only makes sense to bring up comparisons to other games as reference points. Anyway, thanks for reading my review of the review.

Damn this was a pristine fine and well expressed review. No blind bashing nor blind praise. You mentioned the games strengths and what is appealing to certain types of players aswell as its weaknesses and why they might hinder the expirience. I liked the relations made to other games, they give multiple perspectives and gives you an idea of what you can find in Rage 2 that you liked/disliked in other games. Again, very well done review, and i am thankful for the KZbin Recommandation that led me here. Im sure i'll check this channel out more often.

The worst types of games for me aren't the ones where you can tell pretty immediately that the story sucks. Then you just focus on gameplay. The worst types for me are the ones where they seem like they could be something interesting, and some games even make the "story" the forefront, constantly interrupting gameplay. Alan Wake... and for some people Twin Fal... I mean Deadly Premonition you play for the story despite gameplay. Metal Gear you play for the gameplay because fuck trying to make sense of it, and in MGSV's case, it's not even finished. Having a story that could be good but isn't is just always disappointing.

I would like to make a confession... I ADORE this freaking game. Never EVER I had so much fun with a combat mechanic like in this one. I already clocked the game twice with every single nook and cranny found. As a whole, I don't really like open world games and I'm burning out on them pretty fast. This one...just clicked with me in so many ways. Every con said here is true however. Incredible combat and MEH world. I wished there would be more combat, more action. Exploration is kind of dumb outside the needed Arks for the powers. On a several occasions I was like YEAH, MORE, GIMME....and my gf was like "wtf is wrong with you?" as I cackled manically, while making the poor goons into a pool of giblets. Fines, at it's finest. I hope this game sells reasonably well, I need something like this in my life, lol!

The end of this game, should have been the end of the first Act. The story should have taken you to all of the major locations on the map. There's tons of places you can visit, that have nothing really going on there at all.

I'd say that depends on what type of experience you're looking for. This game reminds me a lot of the Far Cry series, an open world power fantasy with uninteresting stories and relatively bland worlds/exploration--one that I personally find endlessly boring since Far Cry 3. The combat here does look enjoyable, but I'd rather play a game like Doom 2016 where that strength can be properly tailored. If you aren't taking advantage of the open world, why go through the trouble of designing it and bloating the game?

VERY good review man. Well-writen, well-made, and actually fun to watch. I've been playing Rage 2, and omg I love it. It's a good example of, for one, how the old-fashioned run n' gun is still a fun as hell genre when done right, and two, how easy it is to appreciate good weapon design. I simply LOVE this shotgun. Just when you think id, or anyone for that matter, can't make a shotgun more satisfying other than by dint of being a shotgun, this shotgun pushes the standard of a what it means to be a good shotgun, cranking the satisfyee-ness to 11.

I love the colour pallete, the sound effects and brooding music and of course the combat. The controls I found a little sticky at first but I'm slowly adjusting. This game gets compared to many others and it's like they've chucked Crysis, force awakens, borderlands, doom, destiny and just cause all in together to make a splendid title. I'd highly recommend it if you haven't tried it yet.

Great review. This echoed my joys and my concerns. I wasn’t expecting it to be as filled as a recent Assassins Creed game, but the world needed at least a bit more. Honestly, I just picked this up because I’m so hyped for Borderlands 3 that I needed *something* to get my fix besides the 50th playthrough of B2. I like it. Great shooting mechanics, gonzo battles, and a colorful world to fly/drive around in.

Big fan of the first one, you use your car do drive TO the missions, on the way some cool car battles. In Rage 2, you spend 70% of the time driving straight....not much action, just to kill 10 or even less people after getting out of your car. Is just me or does it really suck somehow? I expected more doom, less driving. The free stuff without fights is even worse. So much stuff up your arse, it hurts. I wanna fight for stuff!!

How is the enemy AI compared to the first game? The first game was mostly fun because of the different enemy behaviours, but here it just seems like they're cannon fodder. If the enemies had tough AI, then the use of the abilities and powers would be more important rather than resorting to headshot galleries.

Fun tip If you use the void granade and the force palm slap ability just at the right time (frame perfect) (void granade needs a person or object) you will sling shot at moch 20 in a random direction. I've only managed to do it a couple of times now but god dam is it funny

I really wonder often what the hell QA is doing before launch of so many games, when so many people agree after launch about what needs to be improved, regularly coming up with big issues that should have been addressed much earlier!
@thebarbaryghostsf

QA isn't just one person. It's a part of a larger development process. A lot of things get brought up by QA, that get waived by production or designers. You can't always blame QA for bugs making it through to a final product. You'd be amazed how many severe issues get reported that get waived through release certification.

I think it's silly to suggest that the open world environment offers little to the game. I appreciate that the best moments are in these more, linear areas that are close quartered, but the open world design offers the freedom to take your own path. I appreciate that this is a different game to Doom, because of it's open world setting.
@rockpapershot
@rockpapershot 5 жыл бұрын
Like I say in the video, I appreciated the ability to tackle the campaign in any order and to go off hunting for the upgrades, but it's just a shame they never found a way to translate the action to the wider canvas of areas outside the self-contained arenas. I'm not sure what the solution is - more vehicle combat, some aerial dogfights, perhaps - or more things hidden off beaten track (if it doesn't ping up as an icon on the map, it's not worth visiting, sadly). By the end of the game I just saw it as dead space between the action beats I was looking for...
@Chronospherics
@Chronospherics 5 жыл бұрын
@@rockpapershot Thanks for the reply, sorry for saying your thoughts were silly. That does make sense, but I guess that's okay if that dead space is enjoyable unto itself? In Just Cause, the wingsuit offers a movement system that provides players with their own, emergent challenges. 'How long can I keep paragliding, can I skydive down that mountain? What happens if I steal that Ferrari and drive off that ramp?' perhaps that type of thing is what's missing here to fill the dead space. Driving in Rage, serves a largely utilitarian purpose (to get the player from A to B) while in Just Cause, movement unto itself, is a game mechanic. Rather than being linear, perhaps Rage just needs to craft move of an identity in its open world, and its open world traversal gameplay?
@rockpapershot
@rockpapershot 5 жыл бұрын
It's a 'different strokes for different folks' situation. My personal 'sandbox' tastes lean more towards games which use that space to escalate things - seeing how long you can survive police chase in GTA or RDR - for example. In Rage the action never spills out of the activity icons on the map. Of course, once they add giant sand worms (as part of the roadmap) maybe there will be a bigger/better world threat.

Gah. This 1080p video looks better than what I'm natively getting on my PC thanks to the aggressive resolution scaling the games uses to keep the framerate up. I might actually be time to consider upgrading the rig. I've been using the same one for... damn. Almost 6 years now. Threw some extra RAM in it and a second video card, but the Core i7 4790K and SLI 980ti's aren't quite cutting it anymore. The game's super playable, just not with everything cranked up.
RAGE 2 is somehow GREAT and TERRIBLE at the same time
