Open world is meant to be explored so only being a one trick pony, run n gun n loot carrot dangling gameplay chase in open world is the problem. Story, NPCs, level design, deep exploration all kicked to the curb to please twitch viewer drones who flood chats with resident sleepers if theres no constant pew pews. Replaced with drive n shoot loops here. Remember getting lost in random caves, dungeons, bases etc in old school games for hours? All having their own cool stories told by the atmosphere or some hidden NPC? Now we get tunnel vision speed run n gun n loot gameplay like this to "git muh luts". The best open world games have living breathing worlds with intricate storytelling - well at least try. This gen (for open world mind you) Witcher 3 is the only game that has pulled this off masterfully for me. BGS shifting FO and TES into microtransaction cesspools means they are gone. Run n loot works in corridor shooters great like Doom and Wolf - but not here.

So another game with a solid chassis dragged down and diluted by time-wasting open world elements? Why has open world become the default these days--the games where it actually works out seem to be one in a million? Ofc. it can come in many variations, but seeing how developers butcher the Open World concept, I hope they start to rethink their process and instead start using something like this more often. Doom is probably the best mix of linear shooter gameplay and open world gameplay. @@mrfreeman1763 I'm... not sure what you mean... How does that mechanic in any way ruin the gameplay in Doom. If anything, it provides Doom the capacity to be balls deep in the fray and continously killing enemies while being able to sustain yourself if things go wrong. Its what made Doom so good. You had a selection of hand crafted weapons designed for maximum impact and coolness, which you used against hordes of hellspawn. Killing enemies made to reach your objectives, but also fed into the gameplay loop of shooty fun. If your health went down, you could weaken an enemy enough that you do a finisher and get some of it back. If your ammo ran out, you could chainsaw and enemy and get it back. All this basically gave the player the option to more or less have a sustained fight with the endless hordes of hell subject to the skill of that player. I wonder if the vehicles in Rage 2 are actually drivable once you upgrade the tires? That’s all it took in Rage (1) to completely fix their performance.
@KiroOsexXIII
@KiroOsexXIII 5 жыл бұрын
Rage 1 had a big problem in that it felt like the driving and combat were two completely unrelated parts, largely because the driving had literally nothing except for a road the next mission objective and the literal sectioning off of most areas by a loading screen. 2 is much better in that respect since it has no loading screens, making the world feel more cohesive, and the environment is made much more open and there's actual places to go outside of the critical path. Rage 1 plays like a game about driving and a game about shooting, but Rage 2 actually feels like a game about driving and shooting. That doesn't justify the larger problem of how it affects the rest of the game's quality, but it definitely improves on Rage 1 in that respect. I still agree with nearly all of Jim's points, but it didn't frustrate me as much as it did him.

yeah, like the other comment said... just raid some camps and put your project points into the radar abilities... But even without that none of the crates are particularly hard to find. You certainly don't "have to look up a video"... you could just leave the damn crate and continue on with the game or just come back later when you get the radar. Let's be honest here... if you are at all surprised by what this game is and you dislike it then that's your own fault. This game was made by the team who made Rage, Mad Max, and Doom. It was marketed as such. It's basically Mad Max with guns. The world design is practically identical to Mad Max with the flavor of Rage and the gunplay of Doom.

There is no point in hiding cases at all that is my point. Doom hasn't had it and it certainly doesn't do Rage 2 any good as you can see by all the annoyances people have with this game decision. Get the little loot radar perk. Most complaints I see about this game are people not being able to find shit or playing on easy/normal then complaining there's pacing issues when everything dies to the usual head shot damage and they're not having to run around and knock armor off or learn their I frames. I don't understand the pacing complaints as I started by zipping around in an icarus, picking up all the ark weapons and abilities then plopped down at a random spot, did a mission, and ran to the nearest marker for the next blood bath because they're so densely packed on the map and movement is even quicker than in doom with all the ark powers, not even upgraded. Rinse repeat, has not gotten old. I haven't touched vehicle combat. use the icarus, and your pacing issues are gone too.

It basically means that combat happens and you might find a couple of boxes, then when everyone's dead you kinda quietly explore to look for the rest of the boxes and chests, or don't if you'd rather move on. They definitely break the gameplay flow, but I like that; gives you some time for sightseeing after a fight.

Play Final Fantasy XII (if you’re ok with JRPGs with a kind of MMO-esque combat system but done wayyy better), it’s an open game with tons of content that allows you to explore the world and find hidden bosses and optional areas, but it’s incredibly focused and action packed through and through, no filler.

I’m surprised about cars -somewhat- Just Cause always had shit driving, but Mad Max was very good, so I don’t really understand why/how they still fuck it up.

Maybe the game just forces you to upgrade the vehicles with “high performance tires”? That was a requirement in Rage (1), win a race or to then upgrade tires to make the vehicles have reasonable traction and turning (also, handbrake turns are ONLY for turning 180 for vehicle combat). Honestly, the racing in Rage (1) was sometimes frustrating but not that bad if you aren’t trying to beat every race. Rage just has a different idea about vehicles than most games, which isn’t helped by the non-destructable obstacles that completely arrest your momentum when you hit them.

@@ChubzdoomerYeah, see, about that... I am having an extremely difficult time understanding a good portion of these negative reviews, the majority of which contain this most-consistent of complaints: the game has a boring, lifeless open world. Remarkably, in the version of Rage 2 that I bought baddies roam the open road fighting constantly with opposing factions, high-speed races are taking place around random corners, convoys of death careen down long stretches of sandy highways, trade posts pop up in unexpected places, heavily armed goons and road blocks abound, and all manner of flora and fauna can be seen off the beaten paths. I feel like I am playing a totally different game than what these reviewers were given. Or, perhaps, I simply don't understand what makes up a non-boring, non-lifeless open world. I'd really like to see what they think that is. Regardless, I see myself playing and replaying this game throughout the summer. I hope the devs know that a lot of us are extremely happy to have spent $60 on this beautifully crafted gore fest.

@@Thrashman138 This world is designed to drive around with a car and therefore its pretty annoying when you run around on foot because everything is so big spaced. When you compare the open world to games like Fallout / Elder Scrolls Series etc. its pretty lackluster. The combat feels pretty great and i like the visual style of the game. Brandon Campbell maybe you are the type of gamer that didnt played almost every open world game in the past. These days we got bored quickly because you saw those things already in every other game. Outposts arent that new and its funny that they didnt include some towers to open up the map. This game feels pretty basic and lacks in every other way except the combat and graphics. I was disappointed when they said that the story isnt that great and you should focus on the world. Thats not a thing a developer should said and showed that they hadnt confidence in this. It doesnt feel like a big triple A game to me. But i find it fascinating that you didnt got that the game is just made so big because you can traverse it pretty fast. Since i first saw gameplay driving around i found it hilarious how big the streets are in comparison to other games. They can improve and i hope they will.

The first RAGE was half awesome and half boring. They expanded on the awesome part by adding powers and stuff, but unfortunately they decided to expand on the boring parts too. The shooting parts as Jim said are still really really good. It's still the most fun I've had shooting in a single player game since DOOM 2016. Also note to developers: DON'T START YOUR GAME AT THE MOST BORING LOOKING PART OF THE WORLD. Still, I'm really enjoying playing it as I'm not as annoyed by the scavenger hunt part because I can skip them without too much punishment. But I'm more annoyed by the long pauses (quest complete screens, reward screens, restrictive tutorials, etc). I hate the car parts too, and I thought it was shit because it was tuned for controllers and I play on KB+M, but apparently that's not the case either. They did learn some things from DOOM 2016, clearly. But they still went more towards open world games. They should've gone the other way.
