my favourite has been my Alpkit O`Hiro jacket it kept me lovely and warm in the cold snap and nice and dry in a torrential downpour for two hours whilst out walking, its my go to jacket.

I like that Rab jacket. I haven't been out kayak camping for a long time due to illness but I can do short walks and my favourite but of kit for that is my Berghaus goretex over trousers. Long side zip to get on over boots, and totally waterproof whilst being lightweight.

Brought the Helm Compact 1 off the back of your review on it.. It’s only had 1 outing so far but I was highly impressed, it was a windy old camp that night so was worried about constant flapping keeping me awake throughout the night, but it hardly flapped at all - very solid and taught tent indeed! 👍🏻 I have two other 1 man tents also for my wild camps, but this new Helm is my favourite! So much space in both of the porches too, for lots of gear or cooking if weather bad..

One thing I found is that the sleeping pads are a little less noisy and more comfortable if you don't inflate them to maximum capacity. I apologized to some other hikers in a cabin once for the noise and remarked that it wasn't as comfortable as I expected and one of them told me that I was inflated it too much. Much better now.

Greetings from NorCal, happy new year and I’ll hoist a glass of champagne in your honor because you are one of my top five hiking channels. My favorite piece of gear this year was the Big Agnes Skyline Stool which you recommended. I like it because it is light (1 lb) and easy to get out of. Also today I was having trouble lighting my MSR Windburner because of a 25 mph wind although once it was lit it performed like a champ. Because of that I ordered the Soto lighter and fuel adapter you recommended on this vid to make it easier to light my stove. Slainte!

Funny that, X boil - I just got a second in a slightly larger pot size from Leo. The rig for a Toaks 750 is perfect. I use a solo Trangia 28t kit non stick fry pan with it at a cost of about 50 g. Bloody good. Also, wife stole my original L size Xtherm (once replaced by Thermarest after years on their warranty to france) … so I got the max version (because I’m wide myself) … if you start with anything though, it has to be what you sleep on first And again, UGQ Bandit quilt rep, aced my old U.K. Hammocks quilt Durstan xmid (eventually) too … quality is stunning If you were bigger, so far we’d be twins mate. Keep it up for next year … I work outdoors with an outdoor canoe business plus then I do it for fun … some gear if you live that way matters. I do agree with you obviously

Happy New Year to you and Jo. I hope you both have a safe, happy, healthy 2023. My favourite bit of kit hands down is my Unigear Camfy P3 sleeping pad. This is the 4th type of pad I have tried, and it is absolutely a dream. I wish I had just paid the few extra dollars and bought it first. I highly recommend it to everyone, especially if you are a bit on the big side. You will sleep like you are on a cloud.

I have used a full Trangia cook set for decades for kayaking trips. Weight and volume are much less of an issue compared to hiking what I have been doing for the last 15 years. I have been using Jetboil and Soto Windmaster in that time. As I do a lot of ‘real’ cooking, I need the ability to regulate the flame (hence the Soto) and cannot see that working with the light alcohol stoves.

I'd love a quilt but can't justify the cost yet. Give it time though! The wild country helm is definitely a future purchase. I've always used alcohol stoves over gas and recently bought the trangia mini. It's excellent! Going to use my lanshan a lot more this year and hopefully add the helm or a taiji to my collection.. Happy New year to you both!

If you want to try one out on the cheap check out Mountain Warehouse. Their quilt/down blanket is on sale this week, $100 cad , less in USD and UK pounds on the website, might be cheaper in store if there's one near you. Comfort rated at 12-15c so more for warmer weather

Use separates instead of my Rab VR nowadays gives more options. Use a Rab flash (alpha mid) with a wind shirt. (Again rab) can wear separately or together or in combination with a shell. I find when I’m going uphill i start running hot quickly, even in winter so will often just use a base and a wind shell (if no precipitation) if do get chilly just add in the alpha mid layer. Agree with the Xmid, had a 2 since first released. As you say there’s stronger. Lighter, bigger etc but just seems to tick the most boxes. Dan needs to start selling the solid inners separately though. I’m told they’re due to be released February 2023.

Nice selection of gear Paul. I'm not at all keen on any stoves (or kit in general) that rely on extra small pieces that are all too easily lost. Give me an all in one stove/stand/windbreak such as the mini trangia or BCB Crusader 2 or a gas stove that is not too tall and tippy.
