I took sewing from 8th grade on through high school. I could sew new clothes for myself during school hours and get credit for it!❤

I took home ec in junior high school. I use to sew all my clothes. But it is cheaper to buy them on sale or at garage sales now. Knowing how to make clothing repairs is a big plus. My family knows to bring their items to me. I like Marshall's.

Such good ideas. Because of your advice, I have been taking a look in my closet to see what can be repurposed or paired with something else and the purchases are much more intentional. Thank you for the inspiration.

Great tips Miss Nancy. I keep a wishlist and then buy it at the end of the season for a drastic price reduction. I don't buy something just because it's on sale.

I love to thrift, locally and online and have found some great pieces; vintage, designer, … for a bargain. And I like to support the non-profit organizations that operate thrift stores. Also love Marshals.

Thrift shops, Marshalls and TJ Maxx are my favorite clothing stores.

Nordstrom Rack is good. Even really expensive stores, like Saks Fifth Avenue, can have 70-80% off on Black Friday!

I remember taking home economics in school too. I also learned sewing and cooking. I've made clothes in the past which are unique. One thing I constantly do is change the buttons on less expensive coats and blazers which elevate the piece.

Knowing how to do minor repairs is so handy. I wouldn’t call myself a sewer ( is this the correct spelling?) but I can do a few minor things like adding a dart to a boxy shirt.

Hi Nancy! I love to shop sales! I took Home Economics a hundred years ago! We learned to sew and cook! Great tips for shopping on a budget! My quality pieces are from Talbots and J. Crew. ❣️

I had to laugh when you called shopping second hand "treasure hunting" because that's exactly what I call it. I love thrifting and have gotten some incredible, high quality garments for just a few dollars. Oh, and I also had sewing in Home Economics.

Many times I have found a sale item that has a little something wrong with it, for example, a jacket with buttons that are wrong for it, at a deep discount. After purchase, (if it fits and overall in good condition) I take it with me to the fabric store and buy beautiful buttons, sew them on and Viola! A new jacket at a reduced cost! All because I can sew. Thanks Nancy! You’re so great at ideas! ♥️

I buy most of my clothing from eBay. I buy new with tags. And so far everything I have gotten has been great. I used to buy a lot of cheaper things. Now I go for quality over quantity. Or I buy things on sale. If I need it. I’m waiting for an order from Kohl’s. I had Kohl’s cash. So of course, I had to spend it. We have an outlet mall close to us. And I love to shop there. It’s so convenient. My husband got a charge at Carter’s. And we buy for the grandkids there all the time. My son in law used to bring me all his pants to be hemmed. Now we live in a different state. So my daughter must be doing it. Now I get all the grandkid’s toys that have holes in them. Evidently, neither of my daughters took Home Economics in school. And I have some pants that need hemmed myself. And I can do it myself. I’ll probably drag out my sewing machine. It doesn’t get used as much nowadays. I made my oldest granddaughter a Halloween costume, many years ago. And it was rough. So I stopped sewing a lot after that. She’s twenty five now.

Loved the video. I taught Family and Consumer Sciences (formerly home economics) for 40 years and love to sew but shopping the other suggestions you gave is often less expensive than sewing now. I shop at a place called Half of Half in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and get quality pieces at a fraction of the price. Sometimes there is a minor flaw that I can repair or a missized item. It’s a unique shopping experience. They buy out Macy’s, Kohls, Anthropology, Free People, Stitch Fix and designer warehouses. It’s not for everyone but if you recognize quality and no brands it can be a real treasure hunt!

Thanks for clarifying monochromatic colors. I was especially interested in mixing values of the same color. Please repeat this video using cool colors as it is easier to learn with specific modeling.

Great list of ways to save. I always shop in summer sales for the next summer when I find classic pieces. My grandmother wanted me to have sewing skills but I really don't like doing it. So if necessary I use a tailor.

I like to shop at Nordstrom (great return plicies and fast shipping), Lilly Pulitzer, Tuckernuck, Tory Burch, Frank & Eileen. Also I look for online coupons because almost all of my clothes I buy online. Not many wonderful options for clothes here on the Cape and none in the Caribbean.

Quality over quantity is my motto. Old Navy can be more expensive than more highend stores, in terms of years of use. Rarely do I buy sale clothes, because it's past season, shop worn and odd ball colors that no one wants.

As a Certified Bra Fitter for 19 years, I recommend your first step is to be fitted. Kohls, Macys, Nordstrom and Dillard's all have Fit Events a few times a year. Vanity Fair and Wacoal make excellent style for heavy breasts or ones that have lost muscle tone. All stores have Semi-Annual Intimate Apparel sales so watch out for those as another way to save. Good luck!
