Another thing with photos I've noticed (as a buyer and aspiring etsy seller) is that adding decorations to the product photos adds so much to attraction. I will see for example, a zine surrounded by small flowers and leaves, or colored pencils, or in a "student's workspace" type set and be instantly more attracted to the design and look of the product. With stickers, some of that may be photos of the product placed on street poles or placed in its packaging in a bed of grass. These over the top aesthetic photos hugely increase the want to buy them, if not for the product but for the luxuriousness of the photos themselves. And then having more photos of a page or two inside the product (if it's a zine like in the other example I made) with natural sunlight lighting and a solid color background, all of that adds to the amount of photos for each listing and hugely to the appeal. You are very right on having multiple photos for a listed product. When something has less photos, as a buyer (okay, more like window shopper...) I tend to like a product more when it has multiple pretty and various angle photos. It's all about the appeal as well as having a fanbase on somewhere like Instagram. I follow a lot of artists there and see how they work, I'm a loyal fan of them which makes me more likely to *actually* follow through and purchase their work. I am preparing myself to be that business person and strategically open an Etsy shop, all I need is a printer and a hell of a lot more courage. The idea is easy but the doing is the hard part! To me the thought of all this hard work sounds fun at the same time. It's the one thing in my life where I feel like the thought of the journey is as exciting as the thought of the finish line. The few times I've tried to do things like that though I get discouraged right away, another thing is I need to pull through past the first couple months and just keep working, not giving up when there aren't any sales, because it really just takes time for people to *find* you when you are just starting out.

For me volume definitely helped: the more listings, the more SEO, the more traffic, the more credibility. But also after 1 year, now into my second year, I am better at what I do. I've learnt, I've stuck with it. I've upgraded equipment, improved my editing and so on. Eva has put some really good tips here, but it's not like any one of them nails it. Rather it's an amalgamation over time and a million tweaks here and there! If this is REALLY what you want to do, then I definitely advise people to hang in there. You'll most likely have to roll with punches and put in many hours for zero return. But then you start waking up in the morning, glance at your phone, and you've made some money!

Great video. I would add a comment about "perspective of size" of a product in photos. Place something like a spoon near a kitchen item to show the actual size of the product compared to a normal kitchen spoon. Visual representation allows the eyes to quickly learn the real size. You also speak at a very good speed rate. A lot of people think they need to talk slower because views can't understand normal voice speed. It drives me crazy and I tend to skip videos of people talking slower then normal - or repeating themselves over and over.

I am thinking about maybe selling soaps on Etsy, as I make them for a hobby. It wouldn't be a full time business, I only want an order or two a month (is that a lot? Idk). So I have some questions: 1. What number of products is ideal for 1 order a month? 2. Is it a good idea to sell on etsy just as a hobby? 3. What happens if someone has an allergic reaction to a soap? I would have all the ingredients clearly listed and would encourage customers to inform me of any allergies anyway. 4. Is there a maximum number of orders you can receive per month/week etc? If not, what do you do if you get a massive order somehow? (I don't expect that to happen but a friend pointed it out, so I'm just wondering)

Hi lovely. I actually mention in the description box of the video that renewing your listings no longer has quite the same impact as it previously did in 2021. It's actually better now to focus predominantly on listing new products you create. This used to be a really good hack but unfortunately isn't as powerful as it used to be. All the other elements of the video are still spot on which is why I decided to keep the video up but I did want to make sure I messaged you personally just so you don't spend too much time on renewing your listings. Again sorry lovely and it's so annoying that renewing doesn't have the same impact it used to.

If what you sell are handmade children’s dresses? Impossible to have over 100 pieces for sale. I would have to have them mass produced than. My pieces are also hand embroidered as well. 🤔
@ollie21115 жыл бұрын
That is a tough one. From what I have seen with Instagram artists I follow who have been decently successful with one of a kind type items, the most important thing rather than having a lot of products is having a very dedicated fanbase. I would recommend pouring a lot of time into advertising and interacting with people on Instagram with a page promoting and showcasing your items, even with videos of how you make them. You can also do KZbin similarly as well. Videos teaching people or showing them (such as vlogs) helps people connect to you and be more likely to buy your items. From keeping an eye on how people with the big bucks do things, marketing is like at least 1/3 of any self employment job. The more people see you as a person and not just your items, the more someone will pick yours over someone else's. That is just what I have noticed works for other people. It may take time or not work. When I'm ready I'll definitely try my hand at those since I've seen them be successful methods for people (Instagram, KZbin, responding to a good amount of comments). And I've seen them charm me into being loyal to artists ;) Regardless, I wish you the best and hope that your dresses get some loyal customers. Clothes are a hard one to sell as they usually cost more on Etsy than people want to spend but if its something like cosplay for a character people are more likely to spend a lot on it, that is what I have seen as well. ❤❤

Hi Dani, I also have the same problem/opportunity. I have just started a new Etsy shop selling handmade lampshades which are unique but I am a long way off from having lots of different products. I just read Gabrielles reply which makes a lot of sense. I will try to drive traffic from other sources. Also, I was wondering if its better to list the different sizes and colours of lampshades under different products which would then make at least 12 different products. If there are any experienced people that can give me some feedback on this, it would be very welcome. My shop is www.etsy.com/your/shops/TantraLampshades Thank you
@argonaut30015 жыл бұрын
Dani, I think what you may have there is a quandry. Maybe have them made up en masse (yuck I know) and then embroider the finish? Otherwise it's mass produce (boo) or be a purist, hike your prices, and find some very exclusive retail outlets; it sounds like the kind of item that needs to be seen up close and cooed over. Good Luck :)
@ollie21115 жыл бұрын
@@andysamel3105 I hope it all works out for you guys! Yeah, you'd think it would be nicer or more organized to keep the lampshades together with less listings but according to this video it's better to have more listings? Maybe go look around for people who sell home decor on Etsy or social media and ask them what works best for them, cause I don't know on this one. I've heard a few tips by making friends with Etsy/Instagram artists that I respect. It's a good way to be inspired to improve. If people are successful doing it either way then go with your gut and pick what you like better. But that's just me giving my own suggestion 😄. There are many different strategies to test!

I was planning on making a separate listing for each size /color option it could be quite a few but it could also help people get what they want if the picture is of a white item but the potential customer might want a different color instead of them having to click on the listing or just skipping the listing at all they just scroll and boom more options for that design right there

Hi Eva, I have a question about starting up an ETSY shop that I'm hoping you can help me with. I have a passion for many different creative products. I make and want to sell candles, soap, door mats, earrings and photographs (printable art). As you can see these are all non- cohesive products. The photography would be a download product. The rest would be a physical shippable product. Should I open 5 different ETSY shops focusing on just one product? Or, do I open one shop and have 5 different categories? It would be nice to keep everything in one place but would this be a turn off to a buyer? I would drive business separately for each product and direct them to the correct ETSY page. Your thoughts?
@Evaknowsdigitalcreators4 жыл бұрын
Hi lovely. I personally wouldn't recommend opening 5 different shops. Try and find a commonality between all the products you want to sell and focus your shop and business around that. I always think you should consider... "Can I find a target audience that would be interested in all of the products I want to curate in my shop?" Candles, soaps, home accessories, prints, etc COULD all fit into the same shop if they were all centered around one niche... e.g. boho style home accessories for you and your home (including candles, wall art, doormats, etc. You could start with creating one product in your shop and then slowly add in more products as you start to feel out what your audience want 😀💕 I know it's so tempting to want to add everything in your shop all at once but definitely start with one product... discover your audience and then introduce new designs and variations as your shop flourishes on 😀💕

Just found you and love everything you had to say. Thank you. Will be checking out your videos, etc. So you can't take advantage of the benefits of renewing your listings when you are selling one of a kind products (art)? You also mentioned that Etsy needs to become familiar with your products. Once again, I paint one of a kind paintings. So would this hurt me that they cannot become familiar with my products since they are all different?

Thank you so much for this video, it's very informative! I know it's almost a year old now, so just wanted to touch on the comments about paid promotion and renewing listings. Etsy's official podcast has said that promoted ads should really be used on listings that already have a lot of sales, it just gives them a boost. Using them on listings that aren't shifting is a waste of money as they won't rank high enough to compete. Renewing also has very little impact on pushing a listing up in search now. I'm excited to check out the rest of your content! Happy selling.
@Evaknowsdigitalcreators5 жыл бұрын
Thankyou so much lovely. Yes, I think it was pretty similar even a year ago lol. I find that promoted listings can be pretty hit or miss for your shop overall even on listings that are already doing well. I tend to struggle with really getting traction through this method about 80% of the time... But then for some reason every now and again (probably because of the time of the year lol) it can give my shop a quick overall boost that I think if you've tried everything else and you want to give it a go aswell might be worth you trying out 😀💕 As I mention in the video, I personally love offering sales and coupon codes as my Etsy promotional method of choice. As I feel you get so much more control over how you choose to run them and you can make efforts to promote and push them yourself off the Etsy platform to really help your sale or discount offer make an impact in your store. So if you're looking for some Etsy resources that might help boost your sales, I really recommend those :). Also yes, you do tend to get just a small impact on renewing your listings these days, especially on your products that aren't really selling well in your shop. However I still do like to renew my most 'popular listings' from time to time if i've found they've dropped a little just to maintain their momentum in my shop and on the Etsy platform lol. Thankyou so much for your awesome comment lovely and definitely let me know what products your selling in your shop and how it's going 😀💕 I love chatting with a fellow Etsy seller and seeing what you're getting up to in your own Etsy journey😀💕

Hi, firstly thanks for the great video!:) My question is, if you do not want to/ can not have your inventory at your home, can you use a 3PL to take care of the inventory and of the shipping ? If so, how do you do that on Etsy? Because i guess you do not need to print and buy any shipping labels from etsy, neither from post office..because the fullfilment center do the job for you..is that works like with amazon, or different? Thanks a lot

Eva, a very nice video with very helpful info. The one lingering question that remains after watching is, considering the significant Etsy fees applied when sales volume is up, why would you pay to develop an external traffic driving system with Etsy? when such money would be better spent with better results by building your own self-hosted website?
@Evaknowsdigitalcreators4 жыл бұрын
Hi lovely. Yes, you can definitely create your own website and drive traffic to your own platform. I have my own blog and products available and make income from my independent blog 😀💕 But it's always important to consider that even if you're selling products on your own website... you'll still have recurring costs and fees whether it's an independent platform or a marketplace platform like Etsy. Depending on the digital product you want to sell you'll usually have website platform costs, software to store and deliver your digital product costs as well as software to take payments (whether that's inbuilt into your hosting platform or you need to use a third party). That's not to say that I don't recommend creating your own platform when you feel comfortable to... I think it's absolutely awesome and I definitely recommend it when you're ready. But just to say that most eCommerce platforms (independent or marketplace) come at some expense when selling digital products and it's totally up to you where you decide to sell. And how you want to start... Some people prefer to start on marketplace platforms because they're much quicker and user friendly to set up so they can just start learning how to sell and slowly bring in traffic and sales... As well as having the added buffer of a built-in audience! Others feel more comfortable diving straight in with building a website, setting up a strong sales system, and learning how to drive in traffic from scratch on an independent platform... which is also great. But for those that want to create an Etsy shop for ease and as a place to gain eCommerce skills and experience... I also personally think it's great to learn how to drive traffic and sales on your own to your shop as I don't think it's best to rely SOLELY on Etsy to bring in sales as you continue to grow. This is just my opinion lovely but hopefully this explains my view and why I recommend taking the time to learn how to drive in your own traffic as well as why I think Etsy can still be a good platform to sell digital products alongside independent platforms. You can also start gaining experience in driving in your own traffic to your Etsy shop... and then when you're ready you can transfer those honed skills into your own eCommerce website... Which is something I personally did. Which I found takes a little more of the stress off all the other things you need to learn when building an independent website from scratch 😀💕
