Great video. As someone else said it will be good to see the difference between the dual intensity. I could be mistaken but I believe the Phillips only lights up a third of the leds when the parking lights r on an then all of them when u hit the brakes. But thanks for taking the time to make video

Yes I agree with MegaZion Gaming.... I want to see the difference between having park lights on then switching the turn lights on. Basically it’s the difference between these 2 modes which is the most important feature to me. Some bulbs are very bright in both modes which IMO rates them very low because it’s not noticeable when either the brake or turn is activated.
@kleetus92
@kleetus92 5 жыл бұрын
You got lucky with the Lasfit, that particular one does have a noticeable low to high brightness. I have tried some others that were actually brighter, but, the difference between parking light and turn light, was almost unnoticeable.

@cnchess
@cnchess 6 жыл бұрын
You should test the tail light with and without brake light. You need to confirm that there is a major difference between the tail light and the brake light. Bright tail lights are one thing, but if there is next to no difference between no brake and brake, you will get run into. Many LEDs are not majorly different with the brake light on or off. Major design fail. Also, you should check the effect of the turn signal on the effect of the tail light. Same problem, it needs to be significantly different than just the running light or the effect is lost.

OOPS !!! If you put the stock bulbs back in after you have already installed load resistors, you will very likely blow a fuse from too much current being pulled. So, keep new LED bulbs for spares, NOT the originals. The only problem I've ever had with LEDs is poor base connector design....... they fall out of the socket, I'm sure this varies with different bulb and socket combinations, just something to look out for. Sometimes you may get better performance by creating you own reflector out of Aluminum Foil. .
@InJasonsGarage
@InJasonsGarage 5 жыл бұрын
That's great advice about not using the factory bulbs when you have resistors. And also good advice...if the bulb is loose or doesn't fit correctly in the socket, you may have issues sooner or later. Thanks again for adding this great info!

I'm not saying they're bad, but I've had all the big names in LED bulbs for tag lights/parking lights and the only brand that didn't have any die was Phillips. I put those in for the brakes because they are street legal and reliable, and the last thing I want is insurance denied for illegal/failed bulbs.

You raise a VERY good point. The more videos I do about these (I am working on a significant follow-up to this one), the more I learn from experience and comments like yours. The Lasfit bulb that is the winner of this "eyeball" test is one I have been running in my daily driver since I made this video. Because I am running resistors like almost everyone will need to do, I get no "bulb out warning" light on my dash. Turns out, one did fail and I never knew until someone else told me about it. Of course, Lasfit sent me replacements right away...but I have no idea how long it was out. That's a tad dangerous. So now, I make it a point to check them once or twice a week. Longevity is definitely something to consider but is very hard to test.

If they are used for turn signals, you need to install resistors.
@MrFastFox666

2:41 Instead of load resistors, I highly recommend just replacing your flasher relay. It is inexpensive and a much more elegant solution. Not only do you have to mess with wiring if you use the resistors, but you also have to be careful because they get quite hot. Also, you're ditching the power savings that come with an LED, which is one of the reasons I'm looking into upgrading.

@@InJasonsGarage I did suspect that, but figured that if it didn't use a flasher, it'd be using some sort of solid state system that wouldn't be affected by the lower load of an LED.

Best comparison I have seen so far, thanks for taking the time to make this video! From my experience a lot of the "lesser known" bulbs just don't last. I have seen no problems with Phillips or Sylvania bulbs after 6-7 years of using them and the set of SiriusLED bulbs I've been using in my fog lights for the last 3 years are holding up well too but I have had way too many problems with the knockoffs flickering, falling apart, burning out, etc to ever bother buying them again, it's just not worth the expense or the hassle IMO. Even if a reputable bulb isn't quite as bright, I'd take proven reliable and adequate bulbs over exceptional but questionable bulbs any day.

You didn’t do a difference between running brightness and brake brightness. Like how if you turn the lights on they are on running mode but when you hit the brakes they get brighter. Most of the LEDs that I have seen will not get much brighter than running brightness. I suggest you try the OXILAM bulbs because they are rated for 2800 lumens which is much brighter than any of the bulbs you tested and I have seen that they have a big change between running and brake brightness.

You hit the nail on the head! A recurring suggestion is what you suggested...compare the differences of the running lights VS the brake lights. That is definitely important. I am working on a follow-up vid that will show the difference in a percentage and also measures both levels of light output in a more scientific manner (not eyeballing it). Not only that...but the Oxilam lights are part of the next shootout lineup! Great suggestion. BTW...I once had a 2000 Cherokee XJ. Loved it. Wish I still had it. What an indestructible machine. I bought 3157 LED's made in China for my C5. My Question... when the running lights are on and I hit the brakes, the lights do not go brighter. I tested 4 of them. Do I need an adapter? Did they send me 3156's? Because that's how they work, just like a 1156. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hard to say exactly, but it sounds like you do have single filament 3156 lights like you mentioned. I'll assume the factory bulbs work as they should. What I would do is if possible, test them in another vehicle that also uses 3157 lights or if you can, use a power supply like I do in my other videos. If nothing else, send them back and get a set from a different (and well-known) manufacturer name. Good luck, let me know how it turns out.

I have the same style tail lights on my Chevy Cruze. I originally had Sylvania ZEVO LEDs in them as I wanted to upgrade from the stock bulbs. They did the job until I wanted to find something that would give me a full circle illumination on the reflectors since the ZEVO LEDs gave me dark spots on either side of the bulbs since they were flat. I then ran the JDM Astar LEDs like the black ones you have in the video. I was kind of iffy about them until I had them mysteriously start to go dead in the 3 months I had them in my tail lights. The one thing I did like about them is that they gave me the full circle illumination on the reflectors that I was looking for. I remembered recently that I had better luck with the Sylvania LEDs, so I bought another set. These were the silver ones. They were also round, so I knew I was getting light coverage all around the reflectors. They work perfectly, so I'm quite happy with what I have in my tail lights now.

My choice would be the same, wel if it had to be led. Still not convinced by led brake lights, most of the time the difference between Them and parking lights is to little. The difference between the running lights and brake lights is indeed important, and that's why I made sure to take that into consideration in my follow up video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qHycm2l9mNKLi8U The fact that they are instantly on is also important. You want to tell the person behind you "I am braking NOW." and not "I am kinda sorta braking". 🙂 They have a faster illumination time, which means the person behind you (that may not be paying attention) will have a faster reaction time...and won't hit you.

@@InJasonsGarage I liked the Lifetime warrantied Zevo LED's on by 17 Yukon (where GM didn't supply LED's for the license plate and backup lights). Personally, I'm picky on changing the aesthetics of a Corvette and prefer to leave it the way it is, especially so on a wide body C6; (I fell in love with the look from the beginning when I saw the cover of the Corvette Fever in Spring of 2005 with that Yellow Z06 on it.) I might consider some Red Zevo's LED's for the tail lights though, (Sylvania Zevo 3057R.) The Zevo LED's are much brighter than OE bulbs, (more than bright for brake lights - i.e. they will see you,) respond quicker, use less power, and last longer.

I actually made a harness that includes a resistor and allows for not only an LED bulbs replacement in the taillight, but also an LED bulb in an import housing that replaced the lower rear reflectors. So....it is quad taillights/turn signals for the WK2. You think that would be a good video to show how I made it?
@nickruffin5686
@nickruffin5686 5 жыл бұрын
Enplane why you need the resistor for your lights. It is my experience that no resister is necessary if you have a break light application that is not also a turn signal. Also if you are replacing a reverse light no resister is necessary. -- Thanks for the shoot out - before I watched this I had purchased the Ibrightstar bulbs and your shoot out confirmed that I made a good choice. I put them in my Grand Cherokee break light position. These bulbs flash three or four times before going steady. -- One important reasons that I wanted to use an LED was that the biggest problem I have had with the Jeep is that the heat from the incandescent bulb has burned out the bulb holder several times between my two WJ Grand Cherokees. --- Again Thanks.

Jason's Garage Thanks very much. I watched the video with the Lux meter and looked through the comparison chart you made too. All good stuff and a lot of effort by you. Much appreciated. I chose the Lasfit’s based on your information. I liked that they were visibly the brightest in the vette housings even with less LEDs (so less heat). They are much brighter than standard bulbs on the parking light setting, which I like, but my only concern remaining is that they don’t appear much different than the standard bulbs when the brakes are on. I wish the brightness differential was greater. I might install one of those F1 lights between the exhaust tips to ease my concern about that. Oh also thanks for recommending that LED adapter harness! That made the install much easier than me soldering in a bunch of resistors individually...

Nice video and appreciate the time you put into it. I'm currently researching tail light LED's for my 2016 Tacoma and see issues with quality and longevity. 2 things: 1. Elektro Lytic's comment is a good point, "Two factors contribute to a good output; focal point, and LED brightness. Most LED bulbs use cheap dim LED’s from China. Also, on many LED bulbs, the LED’s are not in the correct focal point of the reflector. LED’s should be placed in the same focal point as the incandescent bulb’s filament that the reflector was designed for as is the case with the Lasfit from what I see. The JDMAStar has many LED’s but only a few are in the correct focal point." The Lasfit bulbs seem to address the focal point issue best, as you pointed out in the video with their shape. 2. Would love to see a longevity bench test setup where you have them in a housing and turned on constantly or on a timer to replicate real use, for example 4 hours on, 1 hour off for cool down, or something similar.

@InJasonsGarage 5 жыл бұрын
I agree with Electro Lytics's comment as well. You can have a million LED chips but if they are pointing in the wrong direction, they are quite useless. @@InJasonsGarage From what I'm reading, LED's are voltage sensitive and most of these lights are designed for 12V but actual system voltage goes up to approx 14.5V so that they are getting over driven causing over heating and burn outs. @@PEnZKE99 It still sounds like you have a wiring issue if LED bulbs are draining your battery.

@@InJasonsGarage the wiring strip are gone because of that causing the brake switch and fuses blown. the dealer put stock lights on my rear lights. anyway, anything i should do?? do you think i need to buy other led brand???

@@PEnZKE99 Hard to say. You could try another brand and see if that solves your problem. But if it doesn't, then you may have issues other than LED lights.

You should pull the gun on the Eagle Eyes! Super Bright and Agressive looking! Better than any aftermarket LEDs in my opinion.

I don't prefer the eagle eyes myself. They look too complicated to me with the "ring of diamonds" around the permieter. However, I do have plans for the Morimotos. Stay tuned!

What about tail lights

They are red and light up and are usually found on the back of the vehicle. ;) Okay, seriously though..what's the question?

Wrong. It truly depends on the wattage. How much power it draws. More led diodes doesn’t mean more brightness. If u increase the wattage. Either two siddd or multisided led diodes will be brighter. And it depends on the size of the led chips.

Taillights are red for a reason. I wish the tinting fad would die. LED bulbs for brake lights are all illegal. There isn't ANY on the market that aren't for off-road use only. DOT approved means nothing. FMVSS or CMVSS are the standards. Go look on candlepowerforums.com where those users will tear you a new one if you ask about what led brake lights are good! Auto manufacturers spend thousands testing their lights to meet standards. The average person doesn't have the proper tools to measure light output and direction etc. People, please stop blacking out your taillights. You are defeating a safety feature that was engineered to specific standards.

Prefers Anonymity , I agree 1000%. The clowns that have their taillight lenses smoke colored could NOT CAR LESS about safety, it's all about "looking good". In bright sunlight, you can hardly see them when they use turn signals or step on the brakes. In foggy weather, you have to be very close to the car in front of you to see a stock tail light, can you imagine these morons with smoked lenses, you won't even see them until just before the moment of impact !! Also, smoked headlight covers, nothing like turning the light output of a 2018 vehicle into a 1953 Buick . DUMB !!!

For a long time, composite headlights were illegal. They were vastly superior, but still not legal. I'm glad I saw this vid...just ordered Lasfit LED for the brake light on my Harley.

You and they are pedantic. There is barley any law governing the ACTUAL output of ANY housing on a car. Auto manufacturers do not spend shit for that reason. They spend money to keep their cars looking good. The follow what few laws there are. If they really gave any fucks about that they would use the same bowls and arrays. It is actually a waste of money to keep designing them over and over again. People would cry if the lights stayed the same year after year. Tinting is fine as long as you can still see the output from the max distance required by law. DOT means everything if they TRUELY are. It is in the fucking name. If you want to spend the money, the faster speed is worth it and helps with safety. Hell, even the DOT does not give enough fucks. If THEY did they would update the laws. Incandescent lights are shit and should have been TOTALLY phased out by now on the entirety of NA.

Let them do what they want man. Ultra bright led brake lights will still be noticeable after tinting the tail lights.

1st impression is, the cam is way too close to effectively see anything. Stand back 2 car lengths and look in order to get an actual effect. Looking point blank in to a light is useless for comparison. Lot's of time to make and upload the vid, definitely appreciated!

this is the dumbest things you can do you want to make the lights dimmer because you think it looks good. say that when you are in a accident. you would be at fault because you have tinting on your lights. it has happened before and it will keep happening. never tint lights. they are for safety and to be seen. i don't see why anything thinks making them darker looks cool.
@InJasonsGarage
@InJasonsGarage 5 жыл бұрын
I think you might have missed the point of the video. It was to make the lights brighter to offset the tint. Some people like the look. Unfortunately, and to your point, they tint way too dark and/or don't make the necessary changes to increasing the light output.
