This is why I love this guy. While those questions seem to have been formulated by folks who are "praticing bushcraft" Dave answers them in a way that shows he lives a lifestyle rather than a hobby. His answers are practical for everyday use whether in the bush or in town. The best knife is the one you have. The best fire starter is the one that works to save your life. It's all about the life you live in the outdoors. It's not about the "right" equipment or the "right" technique. It's all about the right experience for you. My favorite videos from Dave are those that talk about common sense topics, his outlook on the outdoors, and the straight talk about life and perspective in general. This thing called bushcraft that everyone one is jumping onto has been around for as long as man has been outside. We in the modern world have been removed from it for the most part. Those of us who feel the need to be outside in a more nateral setting usually don't give a hoot about the fanciest knife, the best ax or the right tarp. We care about the experience of the outdoors and all it teaches us. Thank you, Dave, for your perspective.

I have a lot of folks to thank for my outdoors skills. But Horace Kephart said it best when he observed that "In the school of the woods, there is no graduation day." We can always learn something more. That's what campfires are for ... good coffee and great conversations! BTW ... loved hearing the spring peepers in the background. Ok, I’m a nurse who helps take care of my elderly mother. I have woods around my home but that about ends my bush life. Hahaha Never started a fire excepted to over cook popcorn in the microwave, but….I LOVE BUSHRADICAL!! Also GIRL IN THE WOODS! Could listen and watch you two for hrs. A pair of dry socks is a Must! Put a pair or two in a ziploc bag inside your backpack. Keeping your feet dry is essential along with a lighter & TP.

I like camping with a group, but for the last 8 years I have been solo camping in the Bush with my dog. I am a paddler and painter and I find most people don't enjoy true wilderness without technology. I am just fine "alone" LOL

My best memories camping are the ones that test your abilities. Hiked around Beaver Island in Lake Michigan. Got to 24 below that night. I'll never forget that trip. My favorite knife is a steak knife. Enjoy your videos. Northern Michigan is the best

My every day carry stuff consists of a pocket knife, Leatherman, Bic lighter, small ferro rod with attached p-38 can opener, small pocket sized flashlight, and for urban survival I carry cash and car keys. I use every one of these items on a regular basis. Also, same as you, I am already pretty much bugged out. Loved hearing those happy spring peepers for the music background to your video, and the coyotes too. Thanks, it was fun.

@@Bushradical I think the Bic lighter is actually a litmus test to determine who is pretentious and who is real. People I know who actually live remote always seem to have lighters. I can't actually think of anyone who carries a ferro rod as EDC. I've always got a pocket knife, an LED flashlight and a Bic lighter in my pocket.

Interesting choices of equipment. Having dumped my canoe on the Yukon’s Pelly River early spring just after the ice went out (yeah I know not too bright but a buddy from Virginia was up visiting) I’m certain my heavy wool sweater and good old Zippo lighter saved my butt. Love them both

I think what everyone needs in life is an avenue to apply what they learn or they will never learn anything.....example....I used to get roped into helping my dad work on cars_hated every minute- until I bought my first vehicle. Then I had a reason of my own to understand what we had been doing and it all made sense and became interesting ( and easy to retain and use) .....my advice is .....if you want to learn how to fix cars, then buy a beater with 250k on it. It you want to learn how to build , then build a cabin....Everyone can do it if they try and you will learn SOOOO much. same goes with most things in life ...dive in head first with a reason and you can learn almost anything......but you need to have a reason, or an avenue to apply what you learn.

Great video, I'm new to proper bushcraft but growing up running around the woods and setting up camp where we got too tired to keep going taught me alot about wilderness survival. My dad taught us how to read a compass and map and build a fire, everything else we learned the hard way. Never left home without a lighter ever since, it can save your life. Also never left home without a basic tool set in the truck. Nothing like replacing a rod bearing in a ditch with a piece of my leather belt.

Im a stranger to proper "bushcraft" myself! but, the tool things is totally correct. My first trip to AK i had to tear apart my one barrel carb in the hood of my old f150 on the side of the road in the yukon territory in the snow.....Not a rod bearing but also not the best place to fix a carb. I bet we would have a great time talking about stuff like that. You know you're in trouble when your pulling an oil pan in a ditch !!! I blew a head gasket in Edmonton Canada last spring......fixed it with a can of Rislone head gasket sealer......it held for a whole year.....I dumped in another can last week.....so far so good.

😂 At least you fixed it right. That car is why I'm a mechanic now. It was my running experiment, I threw a rod on it the first week I had it and swapped the engine with a 63 Ford Fairlane 260. I even dirt road raced it. I miss that pile of junk.

I heard about that smelting thing when I arrived in Duluth back in 83. My HS buddy (from Miami) studying at UM Duluth told me its where people sit in yard chairs with pole nets and drink too many refreshments. I laughed like hell when you pulled out the Bic lighter because I knew that's right where you were going. A lot of buschcrafters nowadays say that having a lighter on you is the smart thing to do. Should you know how to use a feral rod? Sure. But there's nothing wrong with using a lighter, or water proof matches, for that matter. Speaking of coyotes, I heard a pack of them yelping and whooping it up when I was outside at work tonight. I assume it was a deer kill as there’s lots of deer around where I work. It’s always awesome hearing coyotes like that. Unfortunately, there was no one with me to hear it. And yes, I agree, wood is best. I grew up in a wood burning family as well. To quote my Dad (80 years young this past January), "I can start fire in snow, using snow." :) I enjoy hearing your mostly non-traditional bushcraft views. Many of my views are the same. Thanks for the video.

Thats a good question. All of our pets have several names...Daisy was originally named Maisey. Ive been calling her Daisy for years. We have a 15 lb cat named "Angry" his other names are Jessie, fatso, tubby, etc, etc.

On the subject of fire, I got stranded in the woods at night with a friend with COPD and no inhalers. We were hypothermic and it had been alternately sleeting and snowing all day so everything was wet or damp. Even though he is a smoker and had a lighter it was impossible to get the fire to light and stay lit. I carry in a huge zip lock bag in all of my packs a DOT issued 30 minute road flare. That is my guaranteed fire in emergencies.

Bushradical I enjoy spending time with you (and your wonderful wife-She loves you man, so don’t screw it up) I was once a real outdoorsman/adventurer. Right now i am unable to adventure because i’ve been quite ill. I believe i’m going to get better and get back out there soon. Anyway, your channel is a delight for me while I’m on the disabled list. God bless you,, man.😊 ps I’ve done a lot of solo camping backpacking. It brings peace to my overstimulated brain. I’ve also gone on many 10day silent meditation retreats to deepen my tranquility. You might try it sometime if you’re not afraid of keeping your own company Being outside is calming even to my baby and toddler grandchildren. Whenever babies and kids get upset and cry/tantrum, I pick them up and take them outside. They immediately calm down. Never underestimate the joy you can bring to other folks just being yourself. You are clearly a well-fathered man. I missed that in my life, so i get vicarious “fathering” thru your dad’s influence on you. If you ever venture East, you’re welcome to camp on our land here in New Hope, PA (on delaware river soutth of Delaware Water Gap where the AT crosses over from PA to NJ. So are any of your friends and subscribers. Believe it or not, most thru hikers agree that New Jersey had the most scenic views and campsites closeby the scenic spots. (I agree but White Mountains and NE Tenn are also spectacular.) Sorry for running on, but that’s what happens when you respond to an old man with way, way too much free time. :)

(1) My favorite campsite was at a place called Brown's Lake just outside of my town of Saint John NB, it was lovely spot the loons were noisy on the water and the forest around was old growth, game was plentiful there and fishing was okay. I had a 20' round tarp tipi set up and loved the camp because I could feel close to Mother Nature; it looked like a cattle herd was wandering the place but it was bear poop, and deer and moose had left their trails as well, bobcat and coyote were common there as were the wretched wild-dogs. (2) I camped by myself a lot it gave me time to find myself, when I did have a group there they loved the spot but made a horrible mistake of calling back to wild dogs which drew the pack right to the campsite (Thankfully the dogs realized a group of people were there and receded away again (no one howled back to the dogs again ;)

Dave, I've been having big problems with PMs not going through (and apparently in a month they will be gone for good anyway) If-- and at the risk of being annoyingly redundant--you didn't get my prior PMs, I just wanted to let you know that I put up my 8 Question video a while back. I also decided to do a 3 books video that you might want to check out as well. As it pertains to the 8 question vid, I'm quite embarrassed at how much of a rip-off the first few minutes turned out to look like. I chopped all that out, until I realized that the video need some sort of opening, so I put it back in. I hope that the state birds up in AK aren't too bad this time of the year!

You got me thinking though how you said that’s a story for another video I’d love to her you and Brooke do story time vids like Jeff at CutleryLover does her on KZbin. Y’all are down to earth and make things nice and easy cut and dry on you philosophies on the things you discuss on the channel and share such great knowledge like the white fire retardant tarp y’all took on alone id never thought of that even though I use a white cone on my flashlight to diffuse light just like the tarp lol plus y’all have such great personalities it would entertaining and educational lol Btw Brooke said in here previous vid on Facebook he 25,000 subs your getting ready to for the road trip to Alaska I hope it goes well and there’s no problems like last time with the head gasket I believe it was?
