Pretty sure it's because EVs (where we are heading) need a load of floor space for batteries and you can engineer them more easily into a tall SUV or crossover, as well as charging more for them than simpler, smaller cars.

@@paultasker7788 A few years ago I helped an elderly neighbour replace his Yeti (which he loved but his lady friend said it was like a van). We tested the Karoq & the Ateca (both nearly new) on the same day; the Karoq is not just a rebadged Ateca with the interior quality & ride of the Karoq being far superior. Despite the Ateca being £1000 cheaper, he wisely choose the Karoq & loved it (just not as much as the Yeti!). Sadly, he died last year.

I'm not sure what evidence you have for this belief. EV sales accounted for 15% of all new car sales in the UK in the first quarter of 2024. EV sales worldwide in the first quarter of 2024 were up by 25% compared with the same quarter in 2023. This suggests the market isn't "dropping massively". I'd be the first to admit that ICE cars have far more soul than any EV could ever have. However, a large proportion of car buyers put function and affordability before soul. Those buyers will dictate what car manufacturers will make.

Jaguar isn't discontinuing saloon cars, "Jaguar's new era begins in 2025 with the introduction of a 600bhp electric four-seat GT car in the vein of the Porsche Taycan, which is thought to be followed a year later by a Bentley Bentayga-style luxury SUV and then a large luxury saloon. All will share the firm's new - and bespoke - JEA platform, and are entirely unrelated to its current models. Basically, they decided that they don't want to be generic like Audi and BMW anymore but wanna be higher up the luxury car ladder - alongside the likes of Bentley, Porsche, Rolls Royce, etc. So basically in the future they'll have 2 saloon cars, a Phantom sized saloon I'm assuming? I think your comments Matt about Jaguar actually tie in as to why all these cars are being discontinued. Jaguar were caught in an 'inbetween momemt' in their product development cycle. Apparently they did develop an XJ replacement but had to cancel it as they looked at the product mix they could offer over the next few years. This was because under the "Green Rules" in both the EU and here they have to increase the percentage of EV products in their total sales each year and failure means big financial hits. I don't know but my guess is that it is easier for manufacturers to delete the high cost, low volume models plus the one odd ball in your list, the high volume Fiesta in order to balance their product ranges and sales volumes..

For me, the most significant discontinued model in recent time is the Skoda Citigo. This is the kind of car we actually need. It was very affordable. My Eco version does 70mpg on the motorway. Zero road tax. ULEZ compliant. Very low insurance. Good packaging means it carries 2 adults + luggage with ease. It's relatively refined and fun to drive. It handles Lake District passes with aplomb. It's cheap to repair. The body was designed by the team who did the Veyron - it looks great. But Skoda have ditched it to focus on gas-guzzling SUVs which offer higher margins. Something deeply wrong here...

Yes, the identical Seat Mii is wonderful. After eleven years and 127,000 miles it runs like a Swiss watch. Comfortable, agile, well equipped, economical (70 mpg on a gentle motorway run), reasonably cheap to service, astonishing amount of cargo space if you put the rear seats down. Very attractive dashboard, easy to use controls, generally well equipped.

@@williammurphy3766 Thanks for the heads up. It seems that Seat have dropped their old version (which reviewers generally felt was slightly inferior to the Citigo) and simply taken over the Skoda version - the body shape at least. And there is still the equally annoyingly named VW Up!, though you pay more for the same car just for the badge. It seems that they are all made on the same production line, though some components vary. Having had some very nice and sporty cars in the past, what I didn't expect was that the Citigo/Up/Mii would be so fun to drive! Tight and responsive and quite nippy too if you want, provided it's not heavily loaded. And motorway cruising is surprisingly refined for a city car - much better than the equivalent Toyota. I'm mainly driving through the fells in the Lakes, and it's great on the steep, narrow lanes. Plus I can often fit into parking spots that the bloated SUVs have left open...

There you can still find a piece of old great analog automotive for good money. Sadly… we have less and less choice.

JLR should only be making 7 models, 3 Jaguar's a GT Coupe, an XJ luxury car, and one a smaller one bit like an XE or XF or in between, Land Rover have 4 models a rough chunky farmer friendly out doors type 4x4, a smaller but luxurious freelander size and type, a bigger family friendly maybe 7 seater, then the full fat Range Rover heavily focused on luxury and style combined with 4x4 ability that's all they need to focus on, I'd maybe consider an even smaller Jaguar to compete in the luxury hatchback segment Audi A3, BMW 1 series class but focusing on class and style
@Offensivebeast
@Offensivebeast 5 ай бұрын
The coupes would need to be in 3 entirely different segments, you’d want one that competes with the cayman then a 911 competitor and then a proper supercar competitor, otherwise they’d get washed together and the best of the 3 would be the only seller and the other 2 would eat money, I think what Land Rover is doing now is fine, they’ve pretty much covered every segment that actually delivers sales, a “chunky farmer” 4x4 which I guess translates to old defender probably wouldn’t be worth their while since the new defender has gotten into that segment (not as much as an old defender would’ve but it’s a lot more profitable and easy to sell) while still selling in the masses to others, the freelander like vehicle they already make, the discovery sport and Evoque both cover that segment, however they aren’t boxy enough in my opinion, the family friendly 7 seater they already have with the Discovery and 8 seats in the Defender 130 and 7 seats in the current Range Rover and Discovery sport, the current Range Rover basically sums what you said. Jaguar however are going to need a crossover or 2 to stay in business, for instance the F-Pace and E-Pace need to stay, they’d need to entirely revamp the XE, and they’d need to choose between the XF and XJ as doing both will be too costly for them, I like the idea of a smaller Jaguar, I think a Jaguar version of the bmw 1 series E82 would be a hit. Not a huge fan of removing models like the Range Rover Sport from LR’s lineup by limiting them to 4 models as that vehicle does basically everything well and sells very well for them and covers a big segment in the SUV market, the velar also covers a good segment same with the Evoque.

I think they don't make EV convertibles/coupes (as you said) because the batteries have to go in the floor which is why EVs are so suited to common SUVs and crossovers, you can 'hide the batteries' in a raised floorplan and no-one is going to be throwing it round corners. Just need to look at something like the MG5 EV estate which looks a bit weird and ungainly because the body seems to be quite high compared to a normal car.

You could call it a bit dull especially in estate form like mine (although its starting to look a bit less bland next to some of these SUVs but it is a very good all rounder and it handles quite nicely. Yes I agree with you Matt, our automotive world is taking a turn and things are changing. As you said when brands are shifting toward and focusing on electric only vehicles it can be a big thing. For example when Honda discontinued the NSX in 2021 because of their focus on electric vehicles as well. Another example is Lexus discontinuing the GS-F in 2020 and the LFA in 2012. One other thing worth mentioning is the fact that every car will be electric so we won't get to hear the engine which will be disappointing. I'm going to be absolutely gutted when all cars are electric. What about car meets? What fun are car meets going to have when everything so quiet?? Electric motors defeat the purpose of a car meet because you won't be able to hear that sweet sounding engine rev hard. I don't want the future to go this way. Or maybe they might be able to make advanced V8 engine sounds for electric cars that sound realistic..? Who knows.

Great content as always, i watch every video you post. …..As a Fiesta owner (on my 3rd one at the moment) I’m sad to see it go. I did read somewhere that Ford ditched it’s cheap cars like the Ka and the Fiesta because they always had to be heavily discounted and as a result they made almost no profit, the plan therefore was to modify the Fiesta, use the same engines, interior, running gear and options list, make it 3cm taller and call it the Puma. Which is now U.K.’s best selling car……only now (because it’s a crossover) it’s £8000 more expensive than a Fiesta….and that’s for the base model with no options.

I don't think it's because of EVs, rather SUVs were exploding in popularity long before the internal combustion engine was put on notice. Also, perhaps firms like Mercedes have finally realised that they can't keep selling around 40 models of vehicle at the same time (nearly half of which are SUVs/offroad).

The problem stems from manufacturers being forced to sell a certain percentage of EVs that nobody wants, they have to cut back on the smaller volume cars to cut costs and simplify supply chains. Just depends whether they can outlast Chinese competition on prices, I looked for what I thought was a reasonable car for my needs and discovered it was £45,000, not a hope in hell of me being able to buy a new car now and I've been buying new since the 1980s.
