In the US, Super Bee's and Javelins were very well known in the 70s and I remember seeing the Saab Sonnets in my neighborhood, the Datsun 1600s, The Sunbeam Tiger is what Maxwell Smart Drove on TV, it had the same engine that the Ford Mustang had, a 289 V8. The Studebaker's were rare because they never made many to begin with.

At 1:18... I love how that car lifts up and goes straight...that's a beautiful sight.
@ifanramadhana78336 жыл бұрын
The reason why Tiger production were stopped was because the V8 uses Ford 260cu and 289cu. When Rootes group (the company that made the Tiger) was bought by Chrysler, they couldn't sell a Ford engined car. And Chrysler V8 were too big and most importantly has distributor in the rear, unlike the front mounted Ford. So it ends the Tiger production. Fun fact, the car was engineered by Caroll Shelby and partly inspired by his success modifying AC Ace using Ford V8 engine that eventually become Shelby Cobra.

That car was soo much fun. she would put the top down, my mom and sister in the passenger seat, my aunt behind the wheel and me hanging on for dear life in the tiny tiny back sheet. we would go on these long drives blazing around the back mountain roads of northern California. good memories.

Here in the States, Japanese cars were still considered to be cheap throwaways that were inferior to "real" cars built by the American marques. There was also the stigma of the Japanese as a defeated enemy that persisted from WWII, which was only a couple decades past. It really wasn't until after the gas crisis of '73 and even into the 80's that Japanese cars really gained in popularity here. Still, some folks knew they were good and bought them. My father owned a 71 Datsun 510 and drove it for over ten years. Great little car and I would love to own and drive one.

Here's a few more fun cars to know... 57 Rambler Rebel - Fastest four door in America, outrunning all but fuelie Corvettes. It was a muscle car before muscle cars, an intermediate body with a big V8. 54 Kaiser Darrin - Named for it's designer Howard "Dutch" Darrin, the car featured unique sliding doors. It was a stunning rebody of the pedestrian Henry J economy car. 56-61 Studebaker 'Hawks' - These performance cars evolved from the seminal Starliner Commander coupes and kept Studebaker in the sporty car market for several years. They also spawned the 58 Packard Hawk. 70-77 AMC Hornet - Available in coupe, sedan and wagon, the coupe was also available with the AMC 360cid V8, making a compact muscle car. 70 Rambler Rebel Machine - One year only Rambler muscle car with 390cid V8 and vibrant graphics. A follow-up to the 69 SC Rambler.

The super bee was made as Dodge's version of the roadrunner, which both came into the game very late since the muscle car war began in 1964 when Plymouth brought out the barracuda and Pontiac with the GTO. Although the Ford Mustang came out around the same time, it is categorized as a pony car and not a muscle car. I always felt what studebaker's downfall was always trying to make their car look new from the previous year, which is okay if the company had the money to continuously make changes.

Mark Donohue drove a Matador in NASCAR, so did Dave Marcus , Tony Bettenhuasen, and Bobby Allison, all didn't do too bad. AMC Had ran an engine in INDY, if you want to talk Oval. Donohue drove Javelin in SCCA TRANS AM, along with Revson and Follmer and others, with great success, taking the Championship no less. Booth and Sirhan were winning in straight line 1/4mile with AMC, and then there is Craig Breedlove. AMC took a lot of Drivers to Success.

lol difference between US cars and European ones; the Americans build a frame out of H-profile iron, some leaf springs from a train waggon, and a primitive V8 so simple that it has to have a displacement of 6-7-8 liters to move the thing - and it can only drive in a straight line, accelerates good due to immense bore/stroke. Now compare to a real car, with suspension made for driving, a vehicle size that is just perfect. Can't help laughing at the US'ers - Mr and Mrs Green have themselves a 8 tonnes err car build from H irons, with a 7+ liter V8 - to transport the two elderly people. Ding-dong lol

Since I knkew the first two (and your Super Bee has the wrong engine if it is supposed to have the then optional 426 Hemi (with dual quad carbs). That looked more like a 360 or 440, which could also be had in the Super Bee, there was no reason to watch the rest of your click bait.

yeah, the Austin Healey and the Sprites were great cars. my dad bought a Healy in '68, took out the stock motor and shoehorned a small block V8 ford into it. changed the whole drivetrane, put in a mustang 4 speed stick, and did some body mods to make the new wheels fit. that car was badass. basically it was poor-mans Cobra, fast as all getout. it could go from 0 to 60 in just under 6 seconds (all in first gear). we used to race 240 z's and smoke their asses. i remember one race up a steep 1 mile grade and we washed the floor with that Z car. later i asked him "Why didnt you change gears?" he responded that the torque to weight ratio was so great we could chirp the wheels in 4th gear.
