Great to see someone looking at these older xeons from 2000 series on a x79, I personally used an E5 2630 bought for around 2 euros with a cheap msi board and 16gb in quad channel and was super happy with its performance, many games performed much better than I expected from such a low clocked cpu. I've always wondered how the E5-2630 v3 compares to this and the other budget chips tested today. Here in the USA they can be had for the same price as the 2670, but it's on the X99 platform. A quick look at PassMark shows a 15% faster single thread, lower rated TDP of 85W, and a 15% better all core score. It does have lower cache and lower clock speeds, but I think the comparison would be interesting.

A 10-core or even 12-core only costs a few bucks more. A whole used workstation system from your local e-waste recycler would cost about the same price as just the motherboard alone from a build... and would guarantee stuff like quad-channel RAM support, that most of those Ali Express motherboards lack... look for an HP Z420, or the Dell or Lenovo equivalents. The conclusion at the end of the video about making the leap to Haswell based V3 Xeon's on "X99" platform instead of "X79" is correct. The jump in IPC, core count, DDR4, AVX2, etc., is all worth paying slightly more. An HP Z440 workstation, with a 16-core Xeon 2698 V3 @ 3.6GHz Turbo, and 64 GB of Quad-channel DDR4 ECC server RAM, plus a cheapo SSD boot drive, can all be had for below $200 USD. Drop in your flavour of GPU to make it a beast gaming rig... Or drop in a bunch of hard drives to make it a home server... or both.

The bench mark part is kinda misleading. They were never made for gaming, they can be on par with some CPU or what ever, but the deal with "old server parts" is getting: 42 physical CPU cores, 84 HT cores, 960GB of DDR4 ECC ram, two 4x1GB NIC, and two 2x10Gbps NIC for £450 MSRP is £13500 10 years ago Just 960GB of DDR4 non ECC ram today is around £1300 The raw multi core performance when it comes to numbers is worth it, the amount of RAM you can get for cheap is mindbogglingly, networking if you just look at numbers is 48Gbps A top of the line CPU will struggle a bit with just a 10Gbps line, having to share that to one or two stations will maybe give you 2.5Gbps to them. having 512 or 796GB of ram at your disposal will greatly out mach a +£1000 CPU with just two or three "old" server CPU

I had upgraded it from an E5-2660, which only ran 2.9Ghz under full load, in gaming the speed boost wastangable, every frame counts when you're working at this level. I might have to increasing the TDP using Throttle Stop and and see if I can get it to run all cores at 3.8Ghz, should give it a nice little boost if it will.

If you're looking to build an ultra-cheap Xeon E5 PC, definitely get a v3 or v4 version rather than an original (Sandy Bridge) or v2 (Ivy Bridge). The v3 and v4 are based on the Haswell and Broadwell architectures (respectively) and therefore support AVX2 and have significantly better performance and efficiency in most games, while often not being significantly more expensive. They can't hold a candle to modern high-end CPUs, but their gaming performance is similar to that of last-gen entry-level models like the i3-10100F and Ryzen 5 4500, and they are still much cheaper (though also much less efficient).

I was tremendously confused by this until I realised this is a E5-2670 v1 which only plods along at 2.6Ghz (3.3Ghz on boost). How about a E5-1650v2 at 3.5Ghz to 3.9Ghz, two less cores but core by core is nearly 28% faster, still 4% faster overall. You find it in bargain basement workstations like the Dell Precision T3610.

I would have liked if you showed more specifics about the pricing of motherboards for these xeons. i havent looked super recently butl last I looked it was 100$ to have the privilege of using a cheap high core count xeon. And compare that to 50-70$ for a used or even new am4 board, and another 50-100$ cpu to go with it, these are getting hard to justify unless you have a real need for loads of threads. Maybe a video breaking down the real end cost of a decent ryzen build used or new vs maybe a slightly faster xeon could be worth a look? 1660s and the like are getting cheap and anything less than haswell will hold them back. really soon 5700xts and 2080s will be getting cheap too and systems like this will hold them back quite a bit. let me know what you think!

I'd love to see a xeon e5 2660v3 tested. 10c/20t

Maybe test out the 8-core 2640v3 for $15 with turbo boost unlock? One of my AliExpress favors for the money. 3.4GHz all core.

can you review this cpu E5-2670 v3, i think this will be a solid contender !

Hey so I had an idea; what if you revisited some K SKU i3's? I was always fascinated by the 8350k and think it'd be a cool thing to try overclocking and see how they hold up

A video about the X5650 would be nice

I'd reckon the freezing in spiderman is lack of cache and/or video memory.

avx2 is supported on the v3 ones iirc for the same price

good video! but your charts are difficult to read via 26" Viewsonic tv/monitor @ 1366 x 768. I enjoy Xeon content for budget builds. I 'm using a e5-2650 v2 w/16gb ddr3-1333 4 x4gb ecc in quad channel for an office/work PC used build i based on a combo from aliexpress back in October 2021. Does what I need, even speeds up my disk imaging operations.

Hello brother. Is upgrading from 2670 v3 to 2680 v4 worth it? It's dirt cheap right now, and I am considering buying one. please reply

Was seeing if someone can answer this for me .. I built an editing station with 2 e2670s and 1080ti gpu with 64 gb ram .. I mainly use davinci resolve , it’s a nice station but I heard that davinci can benefit from newer gpu and performance like rtx 4070 or even 4090 , my question is will this processor be a bottle neck for those higher end gpu ?

Imo if there is a catch with these xeons its the low clock speeds. And older architecture. Means your very likely going to run into GPU bottleneck at some point. But honestly as long as your not overpaying and know what your getting. It can be a good low cost entry point into pc gaming.
