opportunity cost is one of the most important concepts to understand

This piece understates or misrepresents two issues, that can be far worse than claimed. One, modern high tech war requires huge sunk costs infrastructure, and cannot be funded in real time with fully visible costs. The US officer graduate school, Pacific Institute, teaches that all wars are for economic reasons. In effect that means that all wars are initiated as "illegal wars of aggression", contrary to international law. That leads to an arrogant attitude of false entitlement, as a Pentagon and other nations cultural norm, for which most military leaders belong not breathing.

It's a good idea to let people know the real cost of war, but it's also more important to know why to fight and why it's important to fight through political, cultural and diplomatic means rather than just bullets and bombs. Even though I hate and detest violence, there are two things I can't stand about our history since the 50s, 1st our military no longer fights a total war, we have bought into cultural relativism and we treat enemies as though their values are equally as valid as our own, and the 2nd is that in order to appear virtuous we create rules of engagement that values our enemies over our soldiers. Don't get me wrong, we should absolutely do everything in our power to protect their civilians from our soldiers misconduct as well as criminals who may be engaged in victimizing the local population. However, if our men and women on the battlefields see a potential threat, they shouldn't have to wait until they get shot at to investigate and deescalate the threat, that's insanity. Soldiers should have a wide range of actions they can pursue in different circumstances and they should also have a lot of legal immunity should they make mistakes, so long as it wasn't gross neglect, or intentional targeting of civilians. Afghanistan and Iraq are as fucked up as they are not because our soldiers lost, but because of the politics that tied their hands behind their backs and prevented them from actually impacting the lives of the people in those countries. We should have sent in propagandists, missionaries, and businesses that would have been able to equip their people to utilize their resources and environment to create wealth and jobs. Now Afghani girls are being sold to men and are wearing the black trash bags that covers every inch of their body except for the eye slits that open about an 8th to .25 inches and are banned from schools, and public spaces unless they have a male relative with them. We missed a opportunity to free the persecuted christian populations and give them a voice in their country and how they are treated by society. Shame on us for the trillions spent the blood lost and the embarrassment of fleeing from a victorious battlefield.

Frankly, the US in particular, has an absolutely corrupted diplomatic corps--from giving away eastern Europe, to giving away China, to killing decent governance in central and south America to literally killing Haiti. Infrastructure damage is reparable, but human damage is not. Having fought in 4 "wars"--note, not one war since WW2 was declared by congress--I can tell you that not all wars leave the nations involved in the same situation. If you compare the construction and effort in Afghanistan to say, Libya you see the point. The real cost of war comes when you are not trying to win a definitive victory. Half assed strategies and methods are really what destroys nations. Our inability to articulate the goals and achieve them leads to damage to both the nations' economies and the cultures.

So, you're saying, "The ends justify the means," literally ignoring every single cost this video talks about. I know this may sound callous to you, but engaging in your holy war creates nothing but Hell.

I agree that wars like Vietnam are absurd, but, what should be done when a country like Russia starts trying to expand? After Crimea, the world took the diplomatic approach and it didn't help.
