lol, can't get a merlin anymore, please, dig one out of a riverbed and put new oil in it, its fine. What I wanted to say was watch the Merlin engine documentary, really incredible stuff for ww2 era England. One of the tests they had to do was make- idk, 3-5 engines- tear them down, then rebuild them with parts from separate engines, and they all worked perfectly without any adjustments to the parts. Hella tolerances and skillz

The Merlin was the Bad Boy on this block. A couple of others might had more hp, not sure, but that great sound is unique. I am sure it comforted many a soldier, during WWII, and was a tried and true game changer of the air war.

The" Chrysler Multibank " is in fact a twin 6/71 Detroit power pack. It is two 6/71 engines connected together at the flywheel housing with individual clutches and a common output shaft. They also made a 24 cylinder (4 engine ) unit. Only one engine has a starter motor. Once started, you can run one one or multiple engines.

Merlins aren't produced today, but many are bought and sold every year. You can buy one if you have a large box full of money. Radials in the videos that went into the motorcycles are mis-identified as rotaries. Simply nothing wrong with radials except for quibbles like oil consumption. A hundred thousand or so have been used with good results in aircraft. Two different classes of engine are identified as rotary engines. Engines in which the cylinders rotate around a fixed crankshaft, a common arrangement in WWI aircraft, and an engine that uses a rotating part as the piston, like the Wankel engine. Wankels can produce good power to weight ratios, but tend to have high fuel consumption and high emissions.

No sir, the H-16 is not like that. It is, or rather WAS, two flat-eight engines stacked one atop the other - with two separate crankshafts geared together - sharing a common crankcase. See: www.image-share.com/upload/1383/172.jpg Also: 2.bp.blogspot.com/-CXAMOS5outU/URFIcsjAF_I/AAAAAAAAHes/7B7PjFwsX5g/s1600/brmh16rq1.jpg Or any other you may find with a simple Google search.

Senet Wylder SO RIGHT!! I was about to make the same comment you just did!!! It give us the idea, that who make this video, did not know much about engines!!! Also the comment about the Merlin engines, IS NOT quite correct!!! There where a lot of different marks of Merlins, but the Peregrin, the Vulture, and the Griffon, allbeit V-12, were completly different engines!! The great Griffon even rotates in oposite direction of the Merlin!!!

"Tunnel Port" referred to pushrod cylinder heads, which had a tunnel for the pushrods in the intake port to allow maximum port size. Cammers, having no pushrods, needed no such accommodation. Tunnel port manifolds could not fit or be adapted to Cammer heads.

And that guy who made this video, says about the Bugatti parallel bank 16 cyl. that they are "similar in concept tho the H-16 ")!!! First: the "H", does NOT mean "horizontal", but an angine with 4 banks, be it vertical OR horizontal!! The "H", means the FORMAT, THE SHAPE of the cylinder bloks!!! Second : A HRIZONTAL engine, has its cyl. banks laid sideways, (since "horizontal"), be it one bank, or horizontally OPOSED banks of cylinders!! If you want to know something about "H" engines, do read about NAPIER "SABRE" motors!! (The engines of the Hawker "Typhoon", or the Hawker "Tempest", and learn something!!!!

@bairdswestciv9542

What they say is an A57 IS NOT! That is a GM 6046 diesel. It's two GM sixes put together. Both engines powered the sherman. Each GM bank had a clutch. The GM could clutch out either of the two banks, making it possible to run on only one. The A57 was all geared together. Drivers couldn't shut down a bank or two. If it ran with a bank dead, that bank was a drain on power. It was vry hard to tune and this is why US forces rarely used the M$A$ (A57 powered) shermans. We sent most to Britain.

The A57, and THAT'S why Germany LOST THE war too much technology.
@herbertshallcross9775
@herbertshallcross9775 7 жыл бұрын
Lots of reasons Germany lost the war, most importantly because the war was a bad idea to begin with. You may have a point in some instances. Germany had tanks that were much better than American Shermans, but they were complicated and difficult to produce, so we could field a lot more Shermans than the far superior Tigers and Panzers. On the other hand, they should have stopped producing the ME109 in 1943 because the basic platform was obsolete. They had better and should have concentrated on building them.
@smudge0356
@smudge0356 7 жыл бұрын
@Herbert Shallcross All good points, especially about the tanks. Technologically, the Panther was more akin to the UK/USA tanks of the mid-'50s/early-60's; fortunately (for us) it was very difficult to produce in large numbers, and with the advanced tech in its early development it just made it quite unreliable. However, the ME109 was kind of Germany's 'Sherman', i.e. far cheaper & easier to build than the more advanced stuff; plus it was very battle-proven, well developed and kept updated.
@herbertshallcross9775
@herbertshallcross9775 7 жыл бұрын
The combination of the ME109 with it's narrow-gauge landing gear and hastily trained low-time pilots resulted in about 15% of ME109's being written off in take-off and landing accidents. The updated models were only effective against bombers, the primary mission of the Luftwaffe after the bombing campaign against German industries got going if there was no fighter cover. That they were not systematically replaced was a blunder, and a gift to the Allied forces.
@petergraham9106
