My favourite teching to do for this mod is with the Malay's unique tech that removes the gold cost of the militia-line and replaces it with extra food cost. Research blacksmith upgrades, Conscription, Squires, Arson and Supplies a few times (as each Supplies reduces the food cost of the militia-line by 15) and pretty soon you have very fast, free and powerful two-handed swordsmen.

After about 10 researches the castles become an unstoppable laser cannon which just requires you to get fletching as many times as possible to make it work out. Counter to the ICBM: Because if a troop is killed (and in the case of a trebuchet packed-up, too) the siege onager's boulders if in mid-air will do 1 damage if the onager is destroyed while the shots are flying. Thus, if you have teleporting siege weapons one can utilise them to destroy the offending onager before it's too late.
@DGFishRfine15 жыл бұрын
Counter to this: use Ethiopian bombard cannons instead. Once you've done torsion engines a billion times, the difference in blast radius between SOs and bombards becomes negligible. Much faster projectile, even teleporting siege is unlikely to get there in time.
@XDark8SlayerX4 жыл бұрын
Teleporting rams and onegers will close the distance so quickly that you may end up wiping yourself out if you shoot them when they are close to your base. Onegers and bombard cannon projectiles are very slow.
@sanguineaurora87654 жыл бұрын
Doesnt work like that tho. Omagers don't actually lose their attack when killed after they loose. If nothing, there is an exploit that ACTUALLY makes their projectile stronger by making small pellets deal as much damage as the middle one AFTER the onager is killed mid-flight.

Yes-it does work (as does getting monks to recharge faster) but the nature of 256 tech games is that there are usually huge numbers of units on the field. This wouldn't be an issue if the monk's 50% health tech could be compounded too (just make a 1003736362 HP monk that can't die, and convert everything), but unfortunately that tech was coded in as "+15 HP" instead of "HP * 1.5", so even researching it 100 times won't make your monks invincible.

I think the Spanish Inquisition is pretty strong. Aside from the fact that no one expects it, you can get basically instant conversions. Throw in some block printing and all you need is line of sight to convert basically anything. Or, if you want to go really crazy you can go missionaries and add bloodlines to make them tanky as well. But if you're doing this you might want to try to set up some trade in which case sanctity is an option for sure. In fact, monks have techs to increase their range, hp, attack rate (faith regeneration), and movement speed, all of which cost only gold. So if you can set up a sick Spanish trade line and abuse the caravan a bit, you'll be converting pretty much anything.

Byzantines are better then Slavs in that manner, that cataphracts actually benefit from husbandary and gives +6 bonus anti infranty attacks. Kasbah effects castle tech research speed though. Basically, if you buff the speed of the research at your castles enough, in a team game, you can help your allies get their memes armies going faster. I don't believe that conscription effects tech research, and only enhances unit production rates. In solo play, yes, it is probably best to just grab Kasbah a few times just for the faster research and then use resources on Conscription, but 256x is kinda the hilarious meme mode that's best experienced in like, a 4v4.

Crazy Strategy: Our Arrows Will Blot Out The Sun (The Persians said it in 300 but here it's the Celts that actually do it best) (TL:DR Castle arrows grant vision. Play Celts, Mass research Fletching and Stronghold. Attack using only castles. Cross map laser beams.) There's an interesting strategy on 256x tech mod that technically works on any civilisation but seems to be best with Celts. Infantry? Cavalry? Siege? Archers? Who needs 'em? With enough fletching, bodkin, etc. and with the Celt unique tech Stronghold increasing castle firing speed multiplicatively, turning your castle arrows into flaming laser beams, you can completely forego the training of any military whatsoever! Using villagers/outposts/starting scout cav to scout - or better, a teammate with cartography to do the hard work for you when they (pfft) actually train some military like a dunce - you can scout out enemy bases to see the buildings. Unlike any other unit in the game, as far as I know, castle arrows grant vision in an area around where they travel. You can safely attack previously seen buildings (even when you don't currently have sight of them) from the ludicrous range of your multi-fletching castle, and use the solid amount of vision granted by the arrows you fire to attack any units or other buildings within range. Unlike most ranged units with 20+ range, castles can actually attack cross-map pretty comfortably. Without needing resources to train units, (because who needs them when you have a castle or two? Or ten...) or even to advance to Imperial Age, (because Stronghold is a Castle Age tech) you can spend food and gold on researching your two primary technologies instead, turning your castles into orbital strike turret death machines. Civs other than Celts can do this too, but they lack damage (attack speed) comparatively and the vision is slightly harder to make use of because there aren't so many volleys. Stronghold is a pretty cheap tech, and with not many researches of fletching or stronghold required to start blotting out the sun with your volleys of doom, it's not that difficult to get the ball rolling - especially when you don't need to train any units, and ESPECIALLY if you're playing Regicide so you already start with a castle.

Wheel barrel with enough wheel barrel upgrades you can pretty much eat everything on the map with one or two swings from what I've seen, the caravan tech doesn't help with gold income per say but as we all know it speeds up the carts and cogs so I suppose if you were to put some effort into speeding up them (not too much of course) You could effectively result in gold per second with cogs/carts alone and hey the best part about the speed they'd be hard to kill! I'd also avoid the architecture tech line with enough of those upgrades you can pretty much destroy any existing buildings and prevent you from remotely building new ones.

I like that. I always loved large scale feudal wars and its so sad that it's almost never beneficial to stay in that age for long, unless its some kind of prolonged arabia scout war. I can just imagine 200 pop armies with men-at-arms, archers, scouts, and maybe some villagers to build towers etc. No siege, no monks, no "op" units like knights that have an incredible power spike in early castle. Just plain old medieval army battles. I'd imagine that stuff like troop positioning and attack formations would have a lot more to say, when you can't just tech into hard counters and have siege sitting behind a meatshield.
@iwersonsch51316 жыл бұрын
In Feudal, you'd have access to the counters without having to tech into them

Haven't played this mod, but shouldn't camel archers be on first spot: they should be having all the upgrades: range, damage, armor, hp, and most shooting speed without breaking. And then on top of that regen from the unique tech that you haven't mentioned for some reason.

Hi Spirit, just curious, did you ever make a video regarding army formation? I'm curious about when to use boxed formation compared to staggered and the others, and also fleet formations

I have this 9x +increased resources mod that makes researching conscription affect all unit production and tech research speed. Also the Japanese arrow tech researched 9 times makes them able to shoot a crap ton of arrows and 1 tap every unit

By researching the Indians castle tech Sultans a whole bunch, you can get your gold so high that it becomes negative. At that point you have infinite gold, and can buy literally anything. It takes a while and requires you to exploit trade a lot though, so it requires a lot of setup

Am I the only one that considers the Mongols unique technology 'Drill' as a good unique tech in the stock game?? You can rush into someone's base with siege rams filled with infantry.
@gmwdim6 жыл бұрын
Wombat They don’t call Mongol siege rams “Ferraris” for no reason!
@canadian__ninja6 жыл бұрын
In a mid-high level game you rarely see mongols going for infantry so having to tech into them is added cost in what should be a close game. Res you aren't putting into mangu or hussar or trash is largely wasted if your opponent is full aggression. But yes drill is a strong upgrade in the base game of course.
@martijn95686 жыл бұрын
Canadian Ninja I don't think that your infantry needs to be upgraded to get the speed boost for rams.

Okay... Hear me out for a second.... *Burgundian Vineyards.* Cost = 400 food, 300 gold Villagers generate 0.017 gold per second while working on Farms. It pays for itself in... 294 farm minutes. Which sounds like a lot. But if you have 30 farms it will only take 10 minutes. If you have 80 farms - a large but realistic number - it pays for itself in 3 min 36 sec. Eventually it gets to the point where it earns the gold to buy the wood to seed the farms to earn the gold.... Self sufficiency!! It won't get you an OP unit. But it will give you the economy needed for a zerg rush gold army, which is fun in a different way. And in the end, isn't that what really matters.

Isn't the Britons Warwolf tech similar to logistica? Does that make briton trebs OP? Or is it not worth it?
@singularleaf38956 жыл бұрын
okay i know what im trying tonight to see if warwolf is like logistica or torsion engines or maybe a combination maybe???
@anirudhsundar92666 жыл бұрын
I think spirit of the law's Britons analysis covered a bit about Warwolf. Trebs don't normally have splash damage. Warwolf is supposed to add splash damage similar to the trample damage added by logistica. Or so I've heard. Idk

I made Persian War Elephants last night with 3.4k hitpoints, 40 damage, and 20-some armor, but the best part was I had researched so much Mahouts and Husbandry that my elephants could essentially teleport across a giant map in half a second and just warped from one target to another.

Why not Furor Celtica?Or The Korean tech for the mangonel line?(Get the ‘Ontage!)
@canadian__ninja6 жыл бұрын
the korean tech is +1 range for just mangonels if I'm not mistaken, which is outclassed by siege engineers since SE also gives a damage boost and is cheaper. Even if the Korean bonus is +1 range to all siege SE is still the better pick.
@lucassenandelopez63246 жыл бұрын
Furor celtica is fine but korean is just a more expensive version of siege engineers
