Hey June - resident Turkish person checking in. Tarhana is actually a soup! Its main ingredients are yogurt, tomato, and flour. The ingredients are mixed and the mixture is fermented for a few days and then dried. Afterwards, it is reconstituted with water and, most of the time, topped with dried mint after serving. Here are the ingredients in your batch: Cow's milk, yogurt, chickpeas, fava beans, lentils, red peppers, tomatoes, pepper paste, tomato paste.

my sister took her life two years ago and my love for food largely went with her. my wife had to cook because even being in the kitchen would have me falling to the floor sobbing for a whole year. in the last few days ive been watching a lot of your videos and slowly its like some limbs are coming back to life - the food loving parts of me i suppose - and im now planning on trying a bunch of new things. cooking them, even. i cannot thank you enough for sharing your life, though i know it is brief, because it has instilled hope i didnt think existed anymore. love from scotland

June, you have no idea how much of an impact your videos have to your audience-especially this most recent video. Your openness to share your journey is so very much appreciated. Our lives align in so many ways - from being 30-something, to ending a long term relationship, to being asexual, and finally disordered eating- it’s almost been therapeutic watching you share your life in your videos. It’ brings comfort knowing I’m not alone as I figure out life. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. ❤️

This is a fantastic work of art video! Who else can make all kinds of unique recipes, take care of Grandma, work, go to school, see friends, discuss eating disorders and generally philosophize about capitalism, societal expectations of women and our bodies, plus more? Plus put music to all of it. This had to be a thousand hours of editing. I enjoyed, learned, resonated...Thank you for sharing yourself, June. Appreciate.

I'm only 15 minutes in, and want to say thank you June for being so vulnerable. While i can relate some to the disordered eating, your reflection on why you do it can apply to other ways we/I emotionally react (like overspending). I love this long form, it's like a jam packed book. Your watch some, put it down for a day, mull over the ideas, then pick it up again. ❤

You were the only part of Delish I watched and I love your content snd videos now (though I remain partial to an insane budget video - it’s one of my favorite genres). It feels weird to say this but I care about you. I’ve watched a lot of your older videos 2-3 times snd I love the way you approach ingredients and how open you are about the hard parts. They have come out when I needed a king, comforting video and I would save them as long as I could. < hugs >

As someone who as been overweight all her life (I have also lost in total through the years probably more than 300 pounds by dieting and over exercising), I have a really complex relationship with food. Or I restrict and limite my intake (weighing food, avoid specific food, not eating even if hungry) or I eat without conscience because it numbs me. When you are fat, that disorder shows to the world and comes with a lot of judgments… if not hate: “fat people are lazy, they have no motivation, they are gross, they are filthy, the don’t care, they gave up”. Everyday of my life I walk on the street knowing I’m judged. For the moment, I’m dieting, exercising and losing weight, but guilt is a big part of my brain…don’t know if one day I’ll be better…this is the battle of my life…thoughts for everyone, of any size who lives through this…

As someone who grew up in China where the beauty standards are insanely strict on women and who happen to naturally be on the thicker side on the spectrum (well I mean thicker by Chinese standards but thin by American standards), I can totally relate to your body image issue and weight issue. There was a period of time where I would only eat things that I would consider healthy and feel guilty about any other options out there. I'm trying to rebuild my relationship with food right now and no longer limiting myself to a certain category of food. Thanks June for sharing your thoughts and journey with us! It's truely soothing to watch you cook and talk.

While I ocationally of course worry about her, I am listening to you and other people I hear that have had their relationship with food become problematic. I just try and relax and let her do her thing, and hopefully she can have a wonderful relationship with food when she grows up. Or it will be the same, and that is OK as well.

FWIW: when I was young, I liked very few foods, didn't have a big appetite, and was quite thin. My parents didn't pay much attention to it, (this was more due to hands off 70s/80s style parenting, and not really a thought through strategy) and as an adult it all went away, and I am a pretty adventurous eater. I even love vegetables now.

I was missing you after seeing one of your Delish videos I enjoyed two years ago. I'm so glad KZbin showed me your new channel here. I also have lost a parent, have lots of work and only some of it paying, and seek food for creative stimulation and dopamine. I've started helping every week at my friend's herb farm where the kitchen work looks somewhat like what goes on in yours. Except it's more about fresh herbs, given food, food rescued at the end of functions, and whatever grain Eva cooked for the week. This is a brilliant video and I am glad you are still creating.

This video is amazing June! Are some of the recipes weird? Yes! But I've come to expect it from you and in all honesty, you've taught me more about instinctual cooking than anyone ever has. And after watching this video, it's made me think about why we cook what we cook. And are recipes really a good thing? Because you're cooking for you, your tastes, your cravings and flavour notes. Recipes are just there to tell you what someone else says is perfect... you've taught me that x plus y doesn't only have to equal z. You can add a, f and q and it will still equal z, just with a different texture or flavour profile. You still reign supreme on the best videos ever. They make you think. Xx

I am glad you are here. My favorite way to think about food addiction. “Black-and-white thinking is the addict's mentality, which can be a bar to recovery when one is still active. But an addict who finds the willingness can then rely on the same trait to stay clean: "Just don't drink," they say in AA. How's that going to work for an addicted eater? Food addicts have to take the tiger out of the cage three times a day. I've read that some drinkers have tried "controlled drinking," and it hasn't been very successful. Eaters don't just have to try it; they must practice it to survive. Having a food plan is an attempt to address that, and having clear boundaries is a key to its working. But the comfort of all or nothing is just out of reach. ... I'm saying that food addicts, unlike alcoholics and may others, have both to try for perfection and to accept that perfection is unattainable, and that the only tool left is a wholesome discipline. The problem is, if we had any clue about wholesome discipline, we wouldn't be addicts.” ― Michael Prager, Fat Boy Thin Man

I feel like it's a common dynamic within mother-daughter relationships when your mom is an immigrant too. So many of the things you’ve gone through and are still dealing with resonate with me so much. The only sort of advice I can provide is on the body image aspect of things. When I’m having a REALLY bad day with my body I’ll sit and stare at myself in the mirror, I know it sounds counterintuitive but hear me out. I’ll find something, anything, just ONE thing that I actually like about myself, it could be the most insignificant of things, and I focus on it. I ask myself why do I like this thing about me. Sometimes I don’t have an answer, other times the answer surprises me. I have this freckle right in the middle of the tip of my nose, I love it. Some days that’s all I can find to like about myself. Other days I find that I like the shape of my lips or my eyes or anything. Literally any little thing I’ll focus on and only see that so that everything else that’s wrong with my body is so out of focus that I just have to put it out of my mind for the time being. I find that no matter how much we hate ourselves or our bodies we always have at least ONE thing we like about it if you really sit and think about it. And I just have one more thing to suggest. I think it’d be a great idea if you set up like a pop-up restaurant and have guests bring you leftovers or ingredients they don’t know what to do with and you use them to put a meal together. If I were in NYC, I’d totally pay to see what that genius brain of yours comes up with.

hey june, ingredients are cow milk, yogurt, chickpea, broad bean, lentil (red), split wheat, red pepper, tomato, pepper paste, tomato paste. and this one is from Balıkesir, Turkiye. traditional recipe is adding water to a pot than adding tarhana than whisking it. you can add water to the pot until your desired consistency it needs to be like a creamy soup because its yogurt based. but dont add to much water in the first step because it can be lumpy later on. optional things to add (beacuse every region has their tarhana and every household own their recipes) chickpeas, tomato, green pepper, minced garlic. and they serving it with butter sauce; butter, dry mint, dry thyme, paprika (hot pepper flakes are optional) and little tomato paste (1 dessertspoon).

I watched your whole video while doing house work. I am so proud of you. I know that may not mean much from a stranger, but I know through family how eating disorders can reverberate through every aspect of our life. Your videos are so creative. Love the use of all scraps and leftovers.

So many things I would like to say. But I'll try and keep it brief. You are absolutely amazing! Not just for sharing your vulnerability with us but for the way you cope with it all. I think you are helping a lot of us with these honest talks. It especially hit me with the "I need to accept I'm getting older and will not be the same" as this is something I have been struggling with lately, especially from a health point of view. It felt comforting to hear the actual words from someone else. Thank you so much for being so brave and honest and working so hard to make.these long videos! Wish you all the health and happiness you beautiful human being! Thank you so much for everything!

Dearest June, It's now been a few years that I have watched you through some of the hardest patches of my life, seemingly yours as well I believe. I just wanted to pop in, as a loving and caring stranger from over here in Cali, and tell you how unbelievably blessed I am and all of us are to have YOU in our lives. I cannot imagine how incredibly difficult it must be at times to be on camera and to be vulnerable and transparent. But damn chica, you are absolutely filled up with the most beautiful, intriguing, wise, sensational, and amazing layers. I am not the best with words, at times, but the way you explain each and every recipe of yours with such detail and poise is how I reach to find the adjectives to explain your uniqueness. While watching this specific video I have had so many thoughts... First and foremost your ass is absolutely KILLIN IT and you look fantastic all over, so try and tell yourself how beautiful you are each and every day. Secondly, I know as a giver that you are consistently doing for others, showing up for Grandma, friends, and loved ones, and putting your body first seems impossible at times. I recently had to start putting my body first after 33 years and man it's HARD. But if I can give you by advice that I have found through this journey, it is to look at yourself as another individual you are caring for. If we are empty, we cannot supply or give to anyone around. Put that body on a pedestal and know that YOU ARE SO WORTH IT. Lastly, after losing some really close peeps these last few years, know that your momma is with you each and every day and is with you through it all. I know this is a given in grief speech, but I just wanted to verbally state how imperative it is to know that you have the most amazing guardian watching over you, in the way that you believe. Proud of you ALWAYS. Your light shines across the globe and we are grateful for YOU. ❤❤❤

Unfortunately if you quit alcohol suddenly after days/weeks/years of binge drinking you can unfortunately suffer deadly consequences. Alcohol and benzos (Xanax and others) are the two things that can kill you if not withdrawn properly. But 10000% agree the 12 steps for any addiction is a life saver as it is a thinking disease, because once you take the substance away, you’re left with your old behaviors. Makes me happy to see a “normie” refer to the 12 steps ❤ you go June!

I was doing the things that you were discussing while watching the video. But you know what, I forgive myself. Everyday is a new day and I am alive and I can start over! My disordered eating is so much more obvious than yours because of my weight and people are giving me looks but, I don't care. It is what it is and I am slowly winning! Thank you for sharing June, I love your voice and personality. Found you from your depressed eating video.❤

Thank you, June for sharing yourself and your grandma with us. I have suffered from an eating disorder since for sure the 6th grade. I just didn't know it then. Food is the most attainable drug and the one that is never illegal. I feel this in my soul. I see you are a binge/ possibly a compulsive eater like me so I get it. However, I wish I had your body with the disorder. My body is at least twice your size. Thank you for showing that this disease not only affects big girls like me but also people of normal weight. It's harder to see for you, and I'm sure it's hard for anyone to take you seriously. I'm always here if you need someone who is going through it. I haven't had a binge in over 2 years I am happy to say, however, there are off-limits foods for me mostly because I know it will lead me down a path of destruction. Keep taking care of yourself.

You cook your philosophy. You are true to yourself- at least some of the time. That is huge. (To confront your personal abyss 24/7 and the world's abyss at the same time is too hard to do) I send you virtual hugs and wishes for a healthy future. (Ok, a future. The world is a better place with you in it.)

I truly love watching your videos and lives. I randomly found you after my husband passed and I connected with your grief. No one talks about grief so you were like a light in the dark. I stayed because you've helped me look at food differently. I am actively trying to waste less/utilize more and just be adventurous. I know you're just a youtuber but in my mind you're a friend who I'll randomly pop into the kitchen with and listen talk. Always know you have a friend in VA.

June you’re amazing and down to earth. I enjoy watching your videos. When you talk about your relationship with food, I can relate. Never been diagnosed with an eating disorder but I know I have a bad relationship with food. I am overweight and I feel hunger when I’m bored or when I’m stressed or sad and I always give in to end up feeling bloated and miserable later. 😢 if I don’t eat every time I feel hunger I get what feels like tremors in my hands or headaches.

Hey June! Loved this video :') You have such a tender way of expressing your hardships and make something so beautiful out of it, reminds me of that one Doctor Who episode with Van Gogh, and how that museum curator described Van Gogh having this gift take his pain and passion to capture the beauty of this world :') Your content is very healing, thank you ❤✨

As someone who also struggles with mental health issues and food, I appreciate you making this video. Just seeing someone else deal with these things makes me feel less alone. So even if you end up feeling like you didn't make much "progress", thank you for that. It means a lot.
