Last year i gave birth our first baby, my mother in law gave me a ginormous container of coins she saved for over 20 yrs. I sat at home while my mom helping me watching our infant baby. I spent over 5 days putting them in sleeves and my husband brought it to the bank. We got over $1200 worth of coins. I saved all those cash for our baby. So far, our 17 months old baby has roughly $12k in saving. I saved all cash gifts from bdays to new year to holidays. I saved it all.

When my daughter was 12 she got a cash gift from her uncle. She already had many gifts and I made the decision to put the money in her college fund. Years later I found an unmailed thank you that said, "Thank you for the money. Mom made me put it in my college fund. I guess I'll celebrate being 12 then." She graduated debt free from college a few years ago. So proud of her and she still has that slightly sassy personality. I found it nuts that so many people jumped on me for putting her money aside for her. What we want as children is not what we want in the future, and as parents we need to help them.

@@jeanmachowski8708 you did what you should do as parent. I cant imaging how much my son would end up w large college bill if I don't start now. Yrs back when I was in college, cheap and still affordable. Now, expensive and the pays aren't even equivalent. Your daughter is very lucky to have you!

Just a note with the loose change - take it to your bank (if possible) instead of a Coinstar. Coinstar charges a percentage fee, while your bank will not.

I stated putting a quarter in a jar everytime I use my washer & dryer. The money adds up. I take that money and go out and buy my laundry products that are on sale and I also use coupons. Right now on sale is buy one laundry detergent and get 2 free. To me it's a Win Win.

1. Have a no spend month. 2. Put reminders of your money goals in front of you. 3. Increase your automatic savings in small increments. 4. Save all loose change in a jar. 5. Get competitive. 6. Cut something from your budget & see if you miss it. 7. Do the pantry challenge. 8. Limit social media use. Everyone should be doing #3 nowadays. You can automate paying bills, investment allotments, putting money into savings accounts, etc. #4 - Paying with cash is dumb. I hate having to pull out extra money from an ATM when you can just use a debit card to pay the exact amounts. Even better would be to use a credit card because then you also get extra perks, but you can’t say that if you are a Ramsey Solutions NPC. 8 - That’s always a good idea. Social media is accelerating the downfall of Western society.

I need to do a no spend August because I went on vacation last week and spent more than I made making me over budget by enough to have a starter emergency fund and a little more. On top of that, I still owe an additional $1000 to my endodontist for a root canal I'm getting done. This will probably not work cuz I have a charitable donation that automatically comes out of my account every month and I also have insurance payments to make and tithing to my church to do. With the final crown being put on next month, it'll probably be another over budget month. So I'll aim for a no spend September if I can't do it in August.

Rachel, I’m all for adding to savings, but only if everything is paid off. If I am disciplined enough not to spend, that money is going to pay down debt. Maybe I’m looking at this as a person who has a nice savings account and no car and mortgage payment. But I do have debt and that’s my goal😀
