Honestly, my trick to speaking in public, or to someone as a pitch, is to think about your speech or pitch as your time to talk, no one else's. it's your chance to really express yourself in a way that you're comfortable in. I find that when I know that I have to deliver the goods and my ideas are driving the conversation I can go full steam ahead with what I have to say; it's empowering. I hope this helps.

I arrived in Hollywood in 1956. I did not get into movies officially until 1979. I did work regular warehouse jobs and I was very stable. No drugs or alcohol. I learned what I needed to learn. At age 50 in 1988 I became an actor in a TV series called Dear John. By that time I had been a musician and movie extra and recording artist and label owner. I had my own publishing company. I always did things that took me closer to my goals. I now have over 900 KZbin videos, some piano chord tutorials, some investing and financial advice and some recipes and some skits and short movies. I do not need income. If a person needs money to make a movie I would suggest keeping the budget way down low and sell Executive Producer credits at an online auction site. Get your cast at Craigslist. If the acting is bad it is the director's fault. Stay with the scene and make it easier. Last but maybe least is watch Gone Fishin' with Joe Peschi and Danny Glover. that had a 56 million dollar budget. If you can't make a better movie than that for $100, then give up.

Doing wedding videos or corporate videos, etc. may seem like work you don't want to do, but you're still using (or honing) your skills, and most importantly - making contacts. So many industry careers come from knowing somebody who's on the inside, and you never know who knows someone...

Great watch before I got to my media Producer job. I came to school with just the artistic views and the love of movies. I broke down what makes a great movie great. I'll have to do the same for a bad movie. I had never held a DSLR before starting my new career. I'm spending every moment this summer learning the technology. The one thing I have to disagree on is - I love that there's always something to learn- so it's a fortunate thing for me. As always- you did a great job!

Great job keeping it real, D. My biggest peeve is noobs who think they should be directors because they have (according to them, their drinking buddy and their mom) a brilliant idea for a film. But no script. No treatment. They've never even read a script and don't know how to format one if they wrote it. Never worked on a film crew or acted in a film or even on stage unless you count karaoke night at the corner pub. No clue what an f-stop is, let alone framing or composition. The list goes on, but hey, all that stuff can be delegated to the little people, right? So long as you have a vision of a sortofa story concept-thingy, you should be in charge, no doubt.

Just don't follow that formula. It's not very organic. I don't have structure to my scripts and veteran film makers and play directors like my scripts and wanted to use them (I declined, they would have ruined the vision I had for them). You can use them as a guideline but don't have to follow the structure. What is important is the characters and story. Without an interesting character, or story, the structure doesn't matter.

I find the film fest circuit is a bad way to go. You spend a ton of time and money on one project and most times you don't get any revenue from. Going to a distributor is a good way to go to get money for your movie. But, be very careful there are a lot of shady distributors out there lol Distributors can get your stuff on the digital playground of places like Hulu and Netflix. Also, if you have a good idea/story but are not too savvy at writing, find/hire a writer. Get a team together. Having a team really helps ease some of the load of the weight of the film. Watch movies with the sound off and the color desaturated to make you pay attention to the lighting and composition with out distractions. Great tips here! Keep the vids coming! Thank you for sharing!

Im 24 and only a couple years ago wanted to do filmmaking so I'm starting kinda late but I also haven't done anything just yet Ive never been real driven as I've never been real passionate about anything (except maybe basketball) and its hard for me to learn how to get started since I've gotta start from the bottom (which I'm fine with) I have a camera and was doing different things yesterday, it was kinda fun, it was enjoyable, I think its just gonna be a slow thing for me, especially when I'm just kinda by myself I'm not as motivated I guess, but I think I need to learn to get over that, even though I will need a crew at some point I definitely need to start watching more movies. The last few movies I watched were bad and did that on purpose because I remember you saying to watch the bad films as much as the good ones
