Wow, fantastic one and this topic is close to my heart - there are 17 Seiko divers in my collection 😇 and I was delighted to see 5 of them in your fantastic, expert selection. Within your picks, I would highlight the Uemura SLA049. I was considering selling mine until I took it for a one week vacation in the Indian Ocean - the way the sun and sea lights play with it made me totally fall in love. Very, very refined and a mega heritage. As you very rightly say, this one is totally different from any other Seiko diver. But if I had to keep only one it would be the SLA039, for me the ultimate, absolutely perfect Marinemaster.
@BraveBeaters6 ай бұрын

Im interested to know why you choose the sla039 and consider it perfect amongst the other seiko divers
@prwoland37506 ай бұрын
@@yusufbest4475 it’s just my opinion of course. First I love the monobloc case of the marine master it’s a genuine tool watch made for saturation diving but still wearable outside of the water. Then I love blue dials and this blue is absolutely unique, very subtle, and it works superbly with the big markers and outstanding lume. Then there is the bezel which is thinner than on regular Marinematster (which highlights the dial more), its action is excellent and the insert is steel which I prefer over ceramic because it will age. Finally it’s extremely refined and sophisticated: ever brilliant steel, Zaratsu polishing, and a 5hz movement (8L55) made in Grand Seiko studio and very rare, while being historically consistent as the ancestor of the marinemaster was also 5hz. It’s basically a Grand Seiko in terms of execution and tech, but with the full heritage of Seiko legendary diver, and finally it’s very understated: you’re the only one to know what you’re wearing and no one will ever attack you in the street for it. It’s a limited edition for the anniversary but there are still some in inventories I bought mine new from a Japanese AD last year with 50% discount over initial price. That’s many reasons but again just my opinion ( and I love ALL Seiko divers)

I haven't had a Seiko for the longest. Have been exploring alot of Swiss and German watches the past couple of years. Recently, decided to really downsize my collection to 2. Then I decided to get maybe a more expensive Seiko. Yesterday I pulled the trigger on the spring drive Emperor Tuna SBDB013. Love it!

SPB143 does not have a ceramic bezel insert. It’s a steel insert with a hard coating applied. Numerous articles upon the release of this watch falsely stated it had a ceramic insert.

Statistically speaking you're probably far more likely to get one with a lined up bezel than one without. Though the KZbin community will have you believe that 99.9% or bezels are misaligned. It's simply not true.
@simonwright68826 ай бұрын
@@pk1342 I'm only speaking from personal experience as this is one of many seiko dive watches in my collection.
@pk13426 ай бұрын
@@simonwright6882 fair enough, I have 3 bezeled seikos and all of them line up. I get a bit frustrated by some watch KZbinrs who seem to purposefully leave them 1 click away from alignment. My experience of Seiko bezels is that you can align them with the degree of forward/back play especially as the angle between each click is only 3 degrees being 120 click bezels. The only way they can be misaligned is if the bezel printing itself has errors in spacing.

I always struggled with the strap choice and fit of the MarineMaster, until one day I took a page from Nomos and wore the bracelet backwards. That is the swap the 12 oclock end link side with the 6 oclock. The clasp will open on the outside of your wrist, not the inside. You must try it, solves all the wobble and wearability of the watch.

The only reason I can see my SPB313/SPB143 combo leave the collection is if they release the SPB313 case with the SPB143 dial. The comfort of the slim turtle case is just unmatched and the dial (with the possibility to match it with every strap available) of the SPB143 62MAS is just unrivaled. The SLA's are absolutly in their own league and I adore the sizing of the SJE093 (except for the 19mm lugwidth) But I doubt it will give me something substantially more then the SPB143 for the price of something where there is so much more competition.

That Marinemaster is15.4 mm thick, that makes no sense for a 300m dive watch. The Sinn U50 for example costs significantly less, is a 500m dive watch and only 11.2 mm thick, and at roughly half the price of the Seiko, the Mido Ocean Star 600 can go to 600m and is "only" 14.6mm thick. I like Seiko, I am literally wearing one while writing this, and I don't know if I am missing something, but I don't see anything justifying the ridiculous price of the Marinemaster.

i've read some pretty horrible things about the +/- on a lot of these mid ranges seiko's - can someone help me out ? (assume it's living on the wrist, not coming off at night, etc) on what ones i should avoid/look for?
@dustycups6 ай бұрын
These Seiko's can vary quite a bit but there's a few things to keep in mind. They have quite a bit of isochronism. The +/- rate stays a bit more consistent if the mainspring is always at a full rate of wind (i.e worn all the time). If you can inspect them on a timegrapher before purchase, choose one with good amplitude as that indicates a healthy low friction movement. The +/- rate isn't anywhere near as important as amplitude. A movement with good amplitude can be +/- adjusted with confidence that it will maintain it, while one with poor amplitude can lose adjustment again over time. Seiko's inherent problem is that while the movements are machine assembled the lubrication is applied inconsistently, resulting in systemic issues.
@brianhutton23706 ай бұрын
@@dustycups I keep reading about 4L, 6L and 8L movements as well? should i be looking at certain movements that have one of these ?
@dustycups6 ай бұрын
@@brianhutton2370 That's completely up to whether you are willing to pay more. They're definitely a step up in quality/stability (and they're factory regulated) but they also come in watches which are a step up in price. I don't love 6R movements but quite a few of my watches have them - I've just decided to let go of being angsty about timekeeping. There's a lot of other things to like about a watch - dials and cases, which Seiko really excel at. You can also find a way to balance the losses and gains over a day. For example it might lose time during the day, and gain it back at night placed dial up.

Yes that was my thoughts before becoming Seiko addict 😂 the beauty of the brand is to cover all price points which is its weakness in terms of perception in their high end. But at this price you get the 8L movement family (manufactured in Grand Seiko studio), amazing polishing work, often special steels, and a level of heritage second to none. The right comparison is in Switzerland and for 3k for me there’s not one single Tudor who offers as much. Just my opinion.

Sorry to say but any of these $1000+ watches that still use the subpar 6r35 movement are NOT worth it. Has to be a minimum of 6L or better yet the 8L35(GS Movement of the MM300) or the high-torque Quartz of the Tuna. I've had Sumo's with both the 6r15 & 6r35 and they deserve better. I now own an SLA021 MM300, excellent bit of kit. And an Orient Triton Power Reserve with the 40N5a, it runs maybe +5secs/day vs +15 or - 20 of the Sumo movements.
