The aliens being demons makes a lot of sense. The aliens seemed pretty out-of-place in the not-so subtle religious tone of the movie. Also, any beings capable of space travel would not choose to invade a planet that consists of 70% toxic substance.

It wasn't spouse to be a religion vs. science movie, it was just very poorly done.They **ARE** aliens, the question your suppose to ask is weather the existence of aliens matters in a religious sense. They just wrote themselves into a corner at the end and tried to retro fit it. #mnightshamalan

I don't think it was "supposed" to be anything of the kind. And why are you so sure they *are* aliens?
@Sky-si1iv7 жыл бұрын
But in the movie, they talk about birds mysteriously falling from the sky. This disproves they're demons because A: they're aliens flying around in spaceships and B: it does in fact show alien software. I've heard another theory that the aliens were desperate so they attacked anyway and even left in a big hurry (it said they left some of their wounded behind); or, simply, they'd never encountered water before. They're aliens, after all.

On the subject of The Mist ending, the irony is that if they'd never left and they'd never turned on each other, the mist would have lifted and everyone would have been saved. They drove for who knows how long...hours? half a day? It's disgusting to think the mist may have begun to clear behind them, but they kept driving away from it, and it wasn't until they ran out of gas, and he took the time to shoot everyone, the army, who were following the dissipating mist on major thorough fares, or were actually the ones clearing it, little by little. The fact that Melissa McBride is on the one army truck suggests that one truck came from the same town and was right behind them, meaning the mist had cleared before hand. It's not a bad theory, other than the fact the movies own logic disproves it. I am not sure why some people dislike this movie. Maybe because it's such a downer? Seems out of nowhere? I thought it was a brilliant ending and even King himself wishes he'd thought of it. Melissa McBride's character leaves when The Mist happens to protect her children and no one will escort her and even Thomas Jane refuses saying 'Lady, I got my own kid'. Well, not anymore you don't. The ending fit in perfectly with the films theme of morality.

Delirus Innominata Which is all I meant, the video claimed there was no presence of them or reference of them in the movie and that was a false statement, they apparently forgot about that scene. First time I saw "Scream" I thought Dewy was the killer. I guess we were supposed to since, before the final part, he's not around when the killer is (even when the killer calls on the phone) and in that one part where the killer is in the house and Sydney goes running out the door he's right there holding the mask. Then the last part happens and ruins the idea. However I like the idea of him being the never discovered third killer. :)

And when it's discovered, it terminates the emulation and takes full control. As such, it would be able to taste if the drink was wrong and act accordingly. Just like a human.

Monster Childs forgot they're not supposed to share food/drink due to contamination, or knows he has nothing to fear cause he IS the Thing and slipped up. Brilliant ending. While many of the theories were new to me, I actually thought the Jacob's ladder theory as I watched it for the first time in the theatre upon its release. I was less concerned about the "real time"aspect, however, accepting purgatory as more of a dreamlike state than a physical - albeit otherworldly - state. The Mist theory makes total sense. I am an atheist, so I don't necessarily relish that Mrs. Carmedy was right, but hey, its fiction, like The Exorcist and The Omen. It's an amazing film now made even better with an ending that actually has meaning rather than just tragedy. Thomas Jane is very underrated.

Even if she was right doesn't mean that she was right about WHY it would work. I thought at the time that the creatures were clearly Lovecraft inspired, so naturally I really appreciate the idea that, while Carmedy may have believed her "inspiration" was biblical, the film's reality was somewhat different. It just raises too many questions (obviously :P) for me. But it is an interesting thought as to why water of all things hurts them.
@Okulele-d4t8 жыл бұрын
Rocky Otter thats the whole point of this movie! it might be aliens, but whats important is that to our hero, an Ex-priest who lost faith in god, it could be interpreted as demons. they could be real alien spices whos weakness is water. but to Graham it is "water blessed by angel(he said Bo was like angel and she took a sip of those cups of water)" that defeats them. why not demons? this is a movie about belief, and belief is connecting meaningless random dots and giving it a whole new name. idk. maybe aliens ARE demons. and vice versa. ancient folks who got attacked by Extraterrestrial beings wrote that demon part in the bible... (too far fetched?)

At 1:28 you say it comes down to Childs and MacReady while showing Nauls and MacReady. That scene is from when they go to check on Blair. - Doesn't change your point but just felt it needed saying. So in terms of Childs or MacReady being human or Thing I like that there is no definitive answer. They may be suspicious of each other but they are so exhausted and the chance of rescue so bleak that it barely matters anymore. The prequel gives some clues and the game and comic book give their own answers but none of it really matters. For those interested : SPOILERS -------- Prequel - The Thing can't form artificial objects, Childs has an earing. Childs - Human, MacReady - ? Game - Childs body is found, MacReady pilots your character out - Childs - Likely Human, MacReady - ? (does fight the Thing but so do others) Comic - Childs and MacReady both pass the blood/flame test - Neither were the Thing

Well, there WAS a 3rd killer -- Roman. He admits to Sydney that he killed Maureen and then put Billy and Stu up to the murders in the first film. In SCREAM 3s original script, Angelina (Emily Mortimer) was Roman's girlfriend/accomplice. She had actually grown up in Woodsboro and had an obsession/crush on Sydney, which Roman used to his advantage.

The Jacob's Ladder 'fan theory' makes no meaningful difference to the plot. What does it matter how quickly time passes? Also, go back and watch Magnum PI after watching Jacob's Ladder and have your mind blown.
@Mukation8 жыл бұрын
In Jacob's Ladder he's struggling to come to terms with the fact that he's dying and all the things he was going to miss out on in life (A family etc). That's how i figured it was.

I remember thinking along the lines of purgatory when watching the film. kinda made sense to me.
@Mukation8 жыл бұрын
***** Yeah, purgatory is also a valid explanation.
@crunchychips81238 жыл бұрын
I don't think you guys really get the point WhatCulture was making. They weren't suggesting that the Purgatory interpretation was the 'creepy fan theory' (that's probably the default interpretation amongst Yanks, what with their religious cultural saturation) but that the 'realtime purgatory' interpretation was somehow creepier. As the whole film is from Tim Robbins' perspective, what difference does it make whether 6 years or 6 minutes passed in the external world? What is the meaningful difference between the last scene being him remembering his death or him experiencing it?
@snaxx828 жыл бұрын
this is actually exactly the way I perceived it, the film starts in vietnam, then comes the "purgatory" bit (whether real life experience, future or just a mumbo jumbo created by his mind, then it is revealed he died. i agree with chips that the sensation of time is irrelevant for him during his "moments" of death.

With regards to Childs, we then see MacCready lean down a bit. It's out of the shot. But the implication is that he's slowly reaching for the flame-thrower to kill the Thing in front of him as Childs. Before he then freezes to death. Any group finding his frozen body will assume MacCready went insane and murdered everyone.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre one is really stupid. Nothing in the film hints at anything like that at all. Somebody just made it up because they incorrectly thought it was cool. It's not even a fan theory at that point; it's just bad fan fiction.

the Texas Chainsaw massacre happened in real life so it might be a theory about the real one if anything

I posted a similar theory about Dewey on Reddit a while back. However, in mine, he wasn't actually in on the events of the first movie, but he changed after going through all those horrible things, and became the ringleader in the rest of the films. His demeanor is such that nobody would ever suspect him. Also, in every movie there is a scene with Dewey and the killer in the same place without the killer attacking him. Also, any time the killer does attack him, there is always someone there to witness it. Finally, he's always incapacitated when the final showdown between the killer and Sidney takes place. This could be because he is waiting to see who wins, so he won't be suspected if Sidney wins, and the killer can't implicate him if he was helping Sidney.

You forgot VALENTINE. Dorothy was also a killer. In the movie, if you watch at the beginning. Dorothy & Jeremy are kissing under the bleachers. When the other kids discover them, Dorothy says because he's unpopular, Jeremy forced her, so the kids mercilessly beat him up. Years later he gets revenge against Dorothy's friends. She has a fight with her friends (why should the fat girl get a turn). The revenge takes place at her house. At the end she's wearing the Valentine killer costume but falls down the stairs with Kate. When he sits up. Kate's boyfriends shoots her and it's revealed to be Dorothy, even though as the movie closes the bloody nose reveals it's Kate's boyfriend. But the theory says that he told Dorothy we can be together, so she became his accomplice, even though he double crossed her in the end, thus getting rid of the only person who knew he was the killer. Watch the movie and see if you don't agree with me. I remember the whole thing was here on KZbin at one time.

Doctor Loomis being Sam Loomis from Psycho can be backed up by the fact his nurse Marion chambers shares her last name with sheriff Al Chambers and may well be his daughter, this being backed up by her appearance in H20, when she has kept tabs on Michael in a police like fashion, has never married so still has her fathers name.

1:21 even if it was Scotch, MacReady was still testing him. Remember that even _one single cell_ could convert your entire body (even if it took a few days or weeks), which is why earlier Mac is telling everyone to eat out of cans (that are sealed). By taking a swig out of a bottle that would have Mac's saliva (and "Thing" cells, if Mac was converted) without batting an eye, it shows that Childs either doesn't care or is The Thing (also note Mac's expression when Child's takes a drink without hesitation). Not sure if I buy the whole "Dewey is the 3rd killer", though maybe he set the others up so he could swoop in an be the hero (ie the firefighter who starts fires so he/she can put them out). 3:11 is there any evidence for Scott Wilson being Billy though (other than fan wankery)? PS: check out THE NINTH CONFIGURATION for some great Wilson action. 4:32 that one is not bad... keep in mind that Marion's sister Lila wound up marrying Sam and having a daughter, as played by Meg Tilly in PSYCHO 2. Of course, Lila mentions that Sam is dead.. but PSYCHO II takes place in 1983, and HALLOWEEN 2 takes place directly after the events of HALLOWEEN in 1978, and we all know what happens to Sam at the end of that (posh on the rest of the HALLOWEEN movies), so it could still fit. Maybe it could add to Lila's desire to ensnare Norman Bates, as not only did he kill her sister, but because of the path it put Loomis on, it wound up killing her husband too. 6:10 not sure how that changes anything. Whether he is flashing to a future possibility or it is all "in his head", it doesn't matter if it all takes place "in real time" (whatever that means) or not. In fact, the only _real_ scenes are the Vietnam ones. Everything else is memories and dreams, mixed together with the part that wants to live no matter what, and the part that is ready to let go and move on.

There's a deleted moment in Jacob's Ladder near the end where Jacob unmasks Jezebel to find himself underneath, smiling sweetly. If that had been left in, I think the ending would be less ambiguous, since Jez was a stabilizing figure of comfort during the film, and was helping to normalize his life in limbo.

Mootthemad Actually In the Graphic Novel, Childs turns out to be infected, MacReedy & Childs escape the arctic and make it to Argentina, but the thing followed them all the way, killing everyone they encounters, at first MacReedy test his blood to see if He's infected, but Childs poor his own blood and mix it with MacReedy, making people think He's infected, he runs to the Forrest, and childs takes the entire Argentina base, and then reveals himself to MacReady before the base is completely wiped out by the military, They kill him but the Thing already made it to land, So I guess the Gasoline theory is true.

Child's is the alien, but not because of the whiskey. If you look closely at the end of the movie, as Child's and Mac Cready sit out side, you notice that Mac Cready's breath can be seen, proving he's human. You can't see Child's breath.

To be fair, this film was very racially progressive for its time and showed true bravery in doing so. I mean, the black guy didn't even die first. A very brave and unprecedented decision by the film makers but there is only so much they could do.

It's an interesting theory but agreed, the child sacrifice wouldn't have done anything. The woman prophet is theorized to actually be a servant (knowingly or unknowingly) of the evil god/presence that recurs in all his novels. This is theorized because of the fact the one bug lands on her but doesn't attack her. The original ending didn't even end with the dude killing everyone, instead opting for a nice ending since they escaped the supermarket and rode off in the direction of hope. SK loved the movie version though and they went with it because it was so gut wrenching to watch.

My Jaws fan theory: I have fan theory behind jaws. It goes like this. Jaws is not a real shark, but a evil entity conjure up by the lost souls who were kill by the bomb that was shipped to Japan by the SS Minneapolis. You really never see jaws until the the end, so it always seems that jaws is some kind of ghost that appears when ever someone steps into the water. Jaws is the evil curse that shows up the same time Quint shows up. Jaws is Quint’s curse . When Quint dies, the Jaws cures skips Cooper and goes right for Sheriff Brody. Brody also has a scare on his stomach that is never explained, but as a audience I'm led to believe it’s from shark attack as a kid. I believe Brody was marked to be cursed. It’s also kind of weird jaws keeps going after Brody’s family in the sequels after. What do you think? I like this because it’s kind of reminds me of the Voorhees curse. It keeps coming back again and again
