I can show endless examples in Jewish and Christian tradition that 21 is about the average age to make the youngest age for betrothal. Women's bones get denser in their early 20s. Until then they have fragile girlish frames. This densening of bones makes them look womanly.

In at least one of the epistles from the New Testament, Paul mentions "the age of love". Paul lived in the Roman Empire that mandated the age of love as 14 for men and 12 for women, essentially post puberty. Judaism mandates the age of 13. A Christian would not do something harmful to another person, so it's post puberty in any event.

Ryan, the gospel and epistles do occur during the time of the Roman Empire. Both Jesus and Paul explicitly refer to their living in the time and the territory of the Romans. Yes, the age of love was post puberty, and the Roman Legal Code further defines this by age.

I would also say that a 14 year old who is mentally mature could consent to marriage to someone they were in love with even if they had not gone through puberty yet. This is the law in Italy today, and a 14 year old in California can marry with parental consent.

Ryan, I think you misunderstand my point. The Bible, both old and new Testament, clearly states that the proper age of marriage of a woman is adulthood, and defines this as post puberty. However, some women never undergo puberty, and for them we have an arbitrary age standard.

@rad_lad_2715 I haven't looked into what Hebrew word was translated as "young woman" (you may have, just saying I haven't), but if it's not an ambiguous word, you're right: It would be very strange to call a 3 year old a young woman... or a virgin, as was specified. Their argument that she was 3 hinges on assuming Genesis 22:23 is a timestamp of her birth. A few verses later, in 24:1, Sarah dies at 127 which puts Isaac at 37 and he married Rebekah when he was 40, 3 years later. The problem is 22:23 isn't recording Rebekah's birth, but is part of the account of Abraham learning of Nahor's children and grandchildren. The same argument used to claim Rebekah was 3 could be used to say Bethuel, her father, was also 3 since he was first mentioned in 22:22. And that’s without having to mention her drawing water for all of the camels.

Rebecca was 3 years old when she married Isaac, as stated in the Bible. Here is the evidence; 1. Sarah gave birth to Isaac at the age of ninety (Genesis 17). 2. Isaac was in his thirties when the incident of Mount Moriah occurred with his father, Abraham (Genesis 22). 3. Immediately after Isaac & Abraham's incident on Mount Moriah, Rebecca is born (Genesis 22). 4. As soon as Rebecca's birth is mentioned in Genesis 22, few verses down (next chapter), we read that Sarah died at the age of 127 years old (Genesis 23:1-3). 5. At the time of Sarah's death, Isaac would be have been 37-years-old. 6. You can be assured that the Bible considers you an adult when you are 20 years old. The King James Bible never uses the word "adult", but only the word "man" and "woman". Military-age men are considered old enough for marriage in God's eyes. The age of military service under Mosaic Law was 20, and yes, this means that young men aged 20 years are considered men in the Scriptures. They are certainly not considered boys, adolescents, or children.

A ton! In Christianity, you are saved by God's grace which is displayed by the death of his Son Jesus on the cross. God pardons sinners freely by faith and not by works. Works then become the outer evidence of God's work in your life. In Islam, ones salvation is only guaranteed through martyrdom or by keeping the commands of Allah but your good works need to outweigh your bad works on the day of judgement. A lot more can be said but one is works based and one is by grace.

Also God wants us to follow the laws of the land that don't go against Him, He will also speak to people within the context of their cultures and times. Our laws, our cultures, these times say 18+. Personally, at 30 years old, I feel 18 is too young. Kids don't mature as quick as they used to. The 20s seem to be a second wind for the teens. But yeah, if you want to be completely done growing and developing, I've heard some people can grow taller up to the age of 23 and I read the average human brain is done developing at age 25. Nowadays those sound like good age for marriage.

Rebekah was 11 when she married Issac, who was 40. It's in the Book of Jashar, mentioned in the books samuel (1?) and the kings (possibly chronicles if I remember right), so we know it's authentic because it's mentioned in the Bible and referred to as if it should be in the canon (btw, the catholics who cherry picked books for the canon almost took out Daniel and Ezekiel, should we throw out books just bc roman catholics dont agree? I don't know about you, but I'm more of a Protest-ant and won't let anybody, no popes or rabbis, lead me astray bc if they contradict Scripture they are the blind leading the blind.) As far as this topic goes, I think girls should at least hit puberty (plus menstruation) before marrying. Can you imagine people of a tribe who live in sand with precious little food and precious little water, and is surrounded by many tribes who have same condition, a society which has zero rules. Having said that, few things must be made clear. 1 . Muhammad's marriage with Ayesha, the sources talking about her age are contradictory, giving a range between 9 and 22. Her age cannot be confirmed today but all sources confirm that she was married already before her marriage to Muhammad and he took her to his home when her father insisted that Muhammad should take her to his home. 2. Quran does not give us specific age of marriage but Quran is clear that a person should marry when he/she is mature. Quran 4:6 has this to say on this issue. And test the orphans [in their abilities] until they reach marriageable age. Then if you perceive in them sound judgement, release their property to them. Premenstrual is the best term to describe what the quran says in 64 5. Usually the first sign of puberty is the enlargement of the breast which then proceeds in stages , the second is the pubic hair growth that also takes some time and then the menstruation happens. So a girl can be in puberty but she is not menstruating yet. Puberty ends when the cycles have become regular and ovulatory, which takes 1-2 years after the menarche.

It may also help to think of it as not being part of the law, but rather as part of the culture. The Bible is clear that girls must at least reach puberty before marriage (as explained in the video, plus 1 cor 7:36-37 KJV), but between the range of about 12/13 to 45 (old child-bearing age) is up to the culture. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) consummated the marriage with Aisha when she reached puberty and she was able to bear children. David Wood is completely wrong. The verse is about the waiting period for the divorce of females who don't have periods, women who can't menstruate for medical reasons and or who have reached their menopause. Nowhere does it mention pre pubescent girls. Also, playing with dolls does not mean you haven't started your period. Periods start anywhere from ages 9 - 12, girls can still play with dolls at this age.

Also the age of Aisha when she married the Prophet Muhammad (عليه السلام) that you stated is based on some fabricated hadiths that are contained in Bukhari's compilation. Most girls during Biblical times got married by the time they reached puberty, which was between 10-12 years old. Even here in the United States, Thomas Jefferson was 46 years old when he impregnated then 14 year old Sally Hemings. The average age for marriage in the United States for a girl to get married was 12 years old from the 17th through the early 20th century.
