No One Mourns the Wicked is the best song from a dramatic irony standpoint. When Glinda sings, “ the Wicked’s lives are lonely, the wicked die alone, it just shows when you’re wicked you’re left only on your own.” She’s not singing about Elphaba, she’s singing about herself. She’s the one who did truly wicked things and in the end she has no one left in her life. No friends, no lovers, no one who truly knows or values. She gains fame and power but is left empty and alone.
@j.r.cilliangreen4083Ай бұрын
Yes and...no? Completely agree she is singing about herself...there is another way of viewing her journey that involves her knowing that the ONLY way she can "work in tandem" with Elphie is to keep her ability to maneuver in society...Defying Gravity becomes a discovery song for both parties...but journeys taken with the best intentions often get complicated before they end... Love your interpretation as well...i think we can fit together!!!

I found Defying Gravity to be heartbreaking and SO SO powerful at the same time. First time I have ever sobbed in a movie theater. Incredible movie!

I resonated so hard with the line in “The Wizard and I” where she says her family will accept her once the wizard does. I absolutely resonate with the feeling that once someone who is beloved or respected loves you, other people will too.

'no father is not proud of you, no sister acts ashamed' and 'since folks seem to an absurd degree, to be fixated by your verdegris, would it be alright by you, if i de-greenified you?' esp considering he's her father and the reason she's green in the first place

I think you could do a deep dive on Defying Gravity. There are other lyrics you didn't touch on. Such as "I'm through accepting limits. Cause someone says they're so" or "If that's love, it comes at much too high a cost".

I’d love it if you talked about more of the songs from act 2 particularly No Good Deed. I feel like that song has always resonated with me and has so much to unpack from a psychological perspective.

The line from I'm Not That Girl that always resonates with me is "Don't wish, don't start / Wishing only wounds the heart". I've been there so many times - trying not to let myself hope for something or someone because I always end up lonely in the end. But then to counter that, I also love the line from Defying Gravity, "And if I'm flying solo, at least I'm flying free". That lyric makes me feel uplifted, despite my loneliness.

Dancing Through Life is my favorite sequence in Wicked because it manages to affectively tackle multiple plot beats in the span of one musical number without it feeling rushed or ham-fisted. The sequence serves as the catalyst for each characters' respective arcs and what kicks off the main narrative as it is Fiyero coming to Shiz and wanting to throw a party at the Ozdust Ballroom that starts a domino effect that leads to Boq and Nessarose forming an unhealthy one-sided relationship that brings disaster for both parties, Fiyero making connections and decisions that inform who he becomes later on, and Elphaba and Galinda becoming closer and forming a true friendship that is constantly put to the test because of the circumstances coming their way.

It’s interesting hearing your psychological analysis, when because of my field I come at these from a political analysis. For me, Dancing Through Life can’t be separated from the context of Something Bad. The coping going on has a socio-political context of creeping totalitarianism and the people who are suffering or going to suffer under it, and those who have the privilege to avoid having to face that. Together those two songs basically make up the entire plot of Cabaret actually.

Whenever I'm having a hard time with my anxiety and self confidence, I go to my two favourite songs. Dancing through life helps me put my anxiety into perspective. "No need to tough it when you can slough it off as I do" " it's just life so just keep dancing through " "Woes are fleeting, blows are glancing " "Only because dust is what we come to" Defying gravity gives me confidence to face my fears and 'silence' my inner saboteur. " It's time to trust my instincts, close my eyes and leap" "I'm through accepting limits cos someone says they're so. Something I can not change but till I try I'll never know " "To those who ground me take a message from me" On a seperate note , Fiyero is my favourite character so just watching Johnathan Bailey ( and Aaron Tveit❤) perform Dancing through life puts a smile on my face 😊

defying gravity and for good are my favorite songs in the soundtrack and have special meanings and importance for me for very different reasons. elphaba's anthem of saying I'm going to be myself regardless while also acknowledging at the same time that she got here because society deemed her this - society deems me wicked I'll just be wicked- wicked is made not born. The story is the epitome of how evil is made not born and how society plays a role- if you deem me evil and wicked thenI will just be evil and wicked. The fact that glinda wants her to apologize but doesn't fully see the problem because of being a particular type of vain and so their friendship is severed is so important. there are many ways that song resonates with me so I won't list them but for a long time and I think still true now for a lot of people who are outcasts in society for some reason or another can relate to this song- being part of any minority group, having mental health disorders ertc. the song holds meaning and importance. For good holds importance for me because of its importance in one of my own friendships ( for completely different reasons as Glinda and Elphaba).

Sir, I must say that I don't know how I started watching your videos, but you brought a smile to my face in each one of them, you made me think about how someone so smart can be so cute, and you made me retake a thought that I haven't had since I was a teenager and that is “I think I have a crush”. Thank you for making me feel warm and bubbly for so much joy you share in your videos.

I had an intro to psych class where they had us choose a fictional character and give them a mental health diagnosis. I diagnosed Nessarose with histrionic personality disorder (much more centered around her character in act 2).

As someone who faces daily stigma due to bipolar and loves the Wicked Musical, I truly resonate with "Defying Gravity" most. These lyrics are just so important to me. Overcoming every episode that comes to me, is powerful and I thrive by flying, although sometimes too high. But as I also suffer from childhood trauma the lyrics go so much deeper into my soul. Thanks so much for doing a video on Wicked. But as a librarian I have to say it's a bit not good for Jonny Bailey to step on Books but he's forgiven! 😄

I love the reaction videos you do to old psychiatric education videos. I would love to see more of those, and I suspect they would be less susceptible to copyright claims. Especially would love more videos about out-of-favor “treatments” like lobotomies or about the history of mental health issues-maybe some Foucault “Madness and Civilization,” if that’s a topic of interest for you.

I saw Wicked on tour for the first time back in 2012 or 2013 when I was a baby adult woman (18ish). I started crying during Defying Gravity, which, apparently isn't an uncommon thing. A lot of actresses who have played one of the leads on Broadway or on tour have shared in interviews having that experience and deciding that they were going to go into theatre and be in Wicked one day. I just wish I had been as brave as they were. I'm 30 now, and I think it's honestly too late for me to pursue musical theatre.

The Wizard and I - This weird quirk I've tried to suppress or hide And this gift or this curse I have inside Maybe at last, I'll know why #Seriously a BEACON for all things mental health. Defying Gravity - I hope you're proud how you would grovel in submission To feed your own ambition So though I can't imagine how I hope you're happy right now #This reminds of NPD or BPD. And even from the perspective of not understanding or imagining their perspective, but hoping that these actions have at least made them happy.

I LOVE this idea of putting a psychological analysis approach to musical soundtracks. There's a ton of potential, like with Dear Evan Hansen's Requiem, You Will be Found and, well basically the whole musical.

I identified with Elphaba so much stronger than I expected and had the most VIOLENT REVULSION towards Act 1 (and most of Act 2) Glinda. Like she was so many things I despised in people in a neat package. I was happy to see even some change (knowing this is Part 1, so there is more growth coming I hope). I didn't just reject Glinda but also most of the people she surrounded herself with and how cruel and shallow and manipulatably they were which is the contrast to THE REST of the people of Oz (especially in the future as relates to what CERTAIN FORCES want). The Prince shocked me because he seemed to have wants he didn't indulge and he liked being admired and vapid as a facade to keep people from being close and keep himself from being vulnerable. He was also way bi-queer coded. We all relate to Defying Gravity, but No One Mourns the Wicked hit VERY hard when you understand the song is ironic. The people are celebrating committing harm and feeling justified in it because they deemed a force "wicked" whether it was true or not. People commit to wickedness and then purposely don't self-reflect and even deem defensive reactions TO THEIR WICKEDNESS as wickedness itself towards them. There's a lot of narcissism in society's lack of ability to self-reflect and deal with their own NEGATIVE traits and instead needing to find something else to demonize and reflect the traits on.
