That Ozdust dance scene with Glinda and Elphaba will always make me cry. It’s such a tender and beautiful moment between the girls that changed their relationship. It also makes you realize that they’re more similar than people think. As someone who hasn’t seen the broadway musical, this has to be one of my favorite films I saw in 2024.💚💗 thank you so much for watching! I love your reactions!🧹🫧

Glinda at the end, during "Defying Gravity" is trying to prevent "No One Mourns the Wicked" at the beginning the only way she knows how. Because even though Elphaba is completely morally right, when she says The Wizard has no real power she's wrong. He has no magic, but unfortunately he actually has a lot of real power.

Defying Gravity is definitely my favourite scene. Seeing her younger self in the reflection. Her past & future self reaching out to each other, they make contact & it's the broom she grabs. Her singing "it's me" is Elphaba realising that the thing she never felt that she couldn't find a word for was herself & that catharsis is what fuels her rise to singing "it's me!" There's so many nuances from the film that I didn't get from the stage version which made me connect with the characters even more.

Same! I had very little prior knowledge on both The Wizard of Oz and Wicked (I knew the basic premises and, of course, Defying Gravity), I knew nothing about animals being able to talk and when people laughed, I was questioning the collective emotional intelligence of the audience

the ozdust ballroom scene is PHENOMENAL!! it became my roman empire. the way they changed it from the og where elphaba’s dancing is kinda played for laughs and even tho some elphabas cry during it, the movie made it so much more tender and affirming for elphaba and gave glinda such a great opportunity to leave her shitty ways behind and learn from elphaba, make an effort to understand her!!

I’m pretty sure the footsteps aren’t in the sound track because everything in the movie was sung and done live so the mic must’ve picked up on the steps. The soundtrack is the actual more polished studio version

5:40 I saw someone talk about the difference in language used around Nessa’s disability from stage to screen with the latter emphasizing that she does not need or want help or coddling. What happens here, in order to understand the stress of the situation, must be understood as an active obstacle (dare I even say threat?) to Nessa’s autonomy and her chair understood as an extension of yourself. It wouldn’t be much different than someone dragging you away by the arm too tight for you to get loose yk.

WICKED is definitely getting nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars this year (nominations are this Thursday)! Speaking of which, I would also love to hear your thoughts on 2 new movies: A REAL PAIN (which arrived on Hulu just days ago, and is starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin (Eisenberg also directed the film) and Emma Stone produced it) and FLOW (an animated film from Latvia). I'm telling you that you need to be emotionally prepared for both, especially FLOW!

I expect THE BRUTALIST to win Score, Cinematography, Director and probably Actor; EMILIA PEREZ to win International Film, Song, and Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldana); A COMPLETE UNKNOWN is a strong contender for Sound and maybe Actor; Dune 2 for VFX and maybe Sound etc.

There are probably narrative reasons to explain why Fiero didn’t fall asleep like it’s her magic and she subconsciously chose him or he’s such a hedonist he simply brushed off the opiates but really it’s probably because at its heart it’s just a fun nod to how the Scarecrow is the only one who didn’t fall asleep during the poppies scene in The Wizard of Oz

To ignore Dorothy entirely or keep her shuffled off to the side the way the play did would be awkward and strange. Let her be what she is, which is a player in this conflict.

Dorothy doesn’t take away from anything but I still hope the movie takes the route that is centered around Glinda and Elphaba. We have so many movies about Dorothy already. I won’t be mad if they go the other route tho.

⁠@@SafiaRabbani-j9vthe thing is, the play suffers for bending over backwards to keep Dorothy out, and I think it makes Elphaba and Glinda’s story *weaker,* rather than stronger. We’ve gotta remember- Dorothy is *the reason Elphaba dies.* Two of our major supporting characters (hell, we could even call one of them the tritagonist) are going to spend a not-insignificant chunk of the story at her side. Bringing her into the story is the thing that’s going to get Nessarose killed. It just doesn’t make narrative sense for her to have no screen presence or agency given how much she matters to the proceedings. I’m not saying make her center of the story, but for the story to be its best she really should BE in it.

They wanted to make a play not centered on Dorothy and the other characters from the Wizard of Oz. Yes Dorothy killed Elphaba but still she doesn’t have to BE in the movie for very long.

The play is more awkward for having the latter, and yes, it *is* bending itself over backwards to avoid including her. It starts and ends scenes at some pretty awkward places to keep her out, and the narrative structure suffers. It’s a big reason act 2 is weaker than act 1.

This film is definitely ozmazing and deserves all the Ozcars! I will never forget my first experience of seeing the musical and seeing all the beautiful sets and the costume designs, as well as the amazing talented cast. I really connected with Elphaba, so I was so hyped to see this iconic story come to the screen! Ironically the first musical I ever performed was the Wizard of Oz where I played Professor Marvel and the Wizard. And I even got the chance to perform the show again and share the stage with my nephew. I can’t wait to see the conclusion in Wicked: For Good. There’s a novel with its own saga the musical and the film is based on; it’s however different, darker, and more mature. Fun fact: the tune to “Unlimited” is the same as to “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”. Elphaba is a play on the name L Frank Baum the author of the Wonderful Wizard of Oz novel. 👸🏼🪄🫧💖🖤💚✨🧹🧙🏿‍♀️
