Hi everyone! Today I'm sharing 8 classic wardrobe staples that I will NEVER declutter. Or if I do, I will replace these timeless wardrobe staples with something similar. What are the timeless wardrobe staples you've had in your closet for the longest? Let me know in the comments and thank you for watching!
On this channel, I share #slowfashion and #sustainablefashion tips that center around how to shop your closet, and restyling pieces you already own. I also spotlight brands that I believe in every now and then. I believe in #creativityoverconsumption, and that we all have the power to be conscious consumers.
Slow fashion looks different for everyone, and I'm so grateful you share this space with me!

I have a very basic but great quality black knit dress that's about 30 years old. I don't wear it often but when I do I am so glad I kept it. It's perfect for so many occasions and is easy to dress up with different footwear and accessories. I really appreciate the fact that you don't blindly use the "haven't worn it in a year" criteria to decide whether or not to keep an item. Thank you, Alyssa!!

I agree that the one year rule shouldn't be followed strictly, because that could mean decluttering clothes during a mild winter, only to need them when a severe winter happens.

I have a London Fog trench coat that is easily 35 years old. It's in fabulous condition and I love wearing it -- it's a midi length and the color is unusual -- kind of bronze with almost a 2-dimensional sheen. I'm sure I'll never get rid of it!

I also have a London Fog trench even older, I love it. Last year, I did order another color trench from them, but sadly they have switched from nylon to much-lower quality polyester.

Me too ! I've held on to a London Fog trench style midi coat for close to 40 yrs . It has a warm removable liner but I would describe mine as hot chocolate in colour . The shoulder pads are a little concerning to me - I think I'll remove them for a more current look - they don't make them like this one anymore .

My red, midi London Fog trench is 40 years old and I have people stop and ask me where I got it! I lost the belt and recently found a replacement, but it’s great without a belt also. I’ll never get rid of it.

Valadation sisterhood! When they work for you they are signature. Those wide leg pants are just so good. Each one of your keeps just suit you so well. My oldest is a 20 year old dark gray, cotton, oversized button down with a placket that covers the buttons, a second hand navy cashmere that was 20 years old when I purchased and I've had it for 20 years and it's perfect.

My oldest piece is a pair of earrings that I paid $2 when I was about 17 years old. I am now in my fifties and wear them on a regular basis. Every time I wear them, I get compliments on them. I bought them in a flea market. They are fabulous and unique and they are still in perfect condition. Every time I wear them, I still can't believe it. Thanks for this video!

Yes thanks for this comment. I am not a minimalist. I refresh my wardrobe with good quality pieces every year, and take care of them. When I get bored of wearing items or they go off-trend, I store them, and then bring them out again a few years later later, or get them tailored differently. I feel like purging everything to be a strict minimalist is, in some ways, a rather privileged modern perspective. I know it is helpful for many people, but it's not the only path to responsible consumption.

I love this. Many others tell us, if we have not worn it in X years, that it needs to go. I cleaned out my overstuffed closet 3 years ago and got rid of lots. I didn’t follow all the directions and kept a few classics-I am so glad I did! Explaining the WHY of keeping things really helped. I also know how to clear out a few more things-when you shared the blouses, that really hit home. Looking forward to the 29th.

I like that DVF dress and don't recall ever seeing it before. Time to take it out to play! Thanks for NOT insisting we get rid of things not worn for a year or more. I have some beautiful and classic items I haven't worn in several years because of various reasons. I WILL enjoy them in the future and plan to keep them 20 years or more. Also honoring items you already own, no matter their source. Use and enjoy rather than replacing with something "sustainable". It's not sustainable if you ditched a perfectly good option just to buy another.

Hi Alyssa, loved your Ode to the Button Up. So poetic! I loved hearing how they've been with you through many stages of your life. It's true. Some of my oldest items have a sentimental value and have been passed on from family members. I cherish them the most. My favourite and the oldest item is a piece of jewelry my sister and I designed to represent our family - as a family amulet. We took all the old wedding bands from women in my family who had passed on and melded them together to make three identical amulets for Mum's 75th Birthday - for her, my sister and me. So I can now carry all the strength and beauty of my grandmothers and aunts in my heart area. I cannot tell you how much love and courage this gives me.💖💖💖 Have a beautiful day, Bella! Big hugs 🌺🥰

Your DVF dress looks great on you and is a classic that is always in style IMHO. I have several pieces that are over 20 years old ( black leather moto jacket, black coat dress, print skirt). I too will never get rid of these pieces and still wear them, although some only a few times a year. LOVED this video! Another youtuber said your wardrobe should be like a curated art collection. I love all your reasons why your pieces have longevity, and that they are not necessarily basics, either. My oldest items from the 90's, are a black turtle neck cardigan with a zip ‐ super versatile and fits as an extra layer under jackets perfectly; also, a black silk chiffon, bias cut skirt with a pink underskirt, which has served for many an occasion but you can dress it down too.

I've built a nice collection of classic outerwear pieces that I hope to have for many years to come - a few favorites are a trench coat, a black leather jacket, a camel wool coat, a navy wool peacoat, and a black quilted Barbour jacket. Very illuminating video. Thank you Alyssa! I enjoyed your breakdown of why you are keeping an item. I too have things I kept for a long time, decades in my case. True it helps that at 68, I still fit in the jeans from the 70’s I unearthed from my mother’s shed. I have sent you a photo of my Charles Jourdan champagne gold and black woven, Art Deco lace up evening shoes I bought.back in 1975 at Joseph Magnin in San Francisco. I will never part with them. I also have items that I may not wear but makes me happy to look at them that I will keep forever. Bisous!

I have two vintage, mohair sweaters that my aunt and mother knit in the 50’s. They are still beautiful. Currently pairing each of them with a Liberty, floral button up for cooler days this spring. I also have two JCrew blazers (one navy/velvet, one black), and they are both 18 years old. I love them, they still fit and are classic. Thank you for sharing this type of content. I’m sensing a movement, among us, that we are appreciating a balance of current, classic & timeless pieces that last and can evolve with us as we grow older. Incredibly refreshing for us and more sustainable for our planet. 🌍🙏❤️

Thanks for describing the classic white shirt as “button up” rather than “button down.” When I hear “button down” I expect further discussion on collar detail, thinking perhaps that’s now a trend for women again. Then I realize they mean a front placket & buttons. That’s nitpicky of me, but those details are what describe fashion we want versus fashion we don’t want.

Yes...thoseitems that survive in our closet have something special about them. The oldest pieces in my closet are about 45 years old....actually I have a few pieces my mother gave me from the 1940's-1950's that she purchased when she was a TWA airline stewardess....before jets. My oldest pieces are actually some of my best. There was a boutique, The CHIC Boutique, in new shopping mall across from Marshall Fields & Company. I just landed my first job and I started investing in some high end designer pieces.....this was in around 1977-1980 time frame. We did not have credit cards, the internet, nor cell phones. Lay-away was how I was able to afford some to French and Italian Designers. My suede artist jacket was the first piece I put on layaway. I still wear it. I have a Christian Joss silk tunic button down jacket. It was part of a set. Sadly, the top and skirt no longer fit....but the jacket does. It is such a fine silk. I wore it to Paris! I have a pair of Charles Jourdan shoes....when they were still made in Paris. They survived because I purchased a full size larger as those were the only pair available. I had small feet....size 5...back in the day....and these were a size 6. I just admired them. Now my feet are a 6 1/2. I took them to the cobbler to be stretched and its like I have a new pair of shoes. Then the Christian Aujard teal curly lamb jacket from Paris. There was a sundress designed by Bridget Bardot. I still have it. Too young for me, but I can't throw it out. Pillows maybe?

Oldest items: a raspberry colored trench-bought it in 1980 for my first “real” job. Wore it last week and got a huge compliment! Second: a Dior silk scarf purchased in 1981 in all “my” colors. Still wearing and loving it! Third: in about 1998, my girlfriend passed on a Nordstrom silk cream blouse she wasn’t wearing. I still wear it! Fourth, a pair of navy leather boots. They needed reheeling and my then high school daughter loved them. They were tight on me, purchased in 1983, I think, so I gave them to her and she went to get them reheeled so they would be ready to go. The old German shoemaker gave her a scolding for “not taking better care of these boots! They will last years if you do!” At the time, they were at least 25 years old. She just smiled. This video was spot on! You have constantly inspired me to shop less and focus on classics of good quality because it pays off in per wear.

I have a couple of items that my mum gave me that were in her wardrobe for years before I got them, so I have a t-shirt and a knitted jumper (sweater for you American folks) that must date back to the nineties, easily. And I have a gorgeous Breton top that cost about £30 (definitely not fast fashion prices, especially these days when the quality of fast fashion clothing is so low) that I got about fifteen years ago. And I have a cardigan that was part of my work wardrobe for my first ever job, back in about 1999. If you like something, if it fits, if it goes with other things in your wardrobe, and if you do wear it, hold onto it and make use of it!

Great video, Alyssa! I have favorites in my closet, too. As my grandma used to call them, "My old friends." :) The oldest pieces I have are the suit and dress my grandparents wore when they married in 1940. The vest from the suit had a tattered back, but the front was in good condition, so I had a tailor redo the back. I loooove wearing this vest! It's truly a "statement" piece that connects me to my beloved grandparents. Keep up the great work with your videos. Always inspiring and encouraging.

I love the bit about old fast fashion pieces. I have this old Zara blouse (in fact so old, it has "Made in Spain" tag!) that is one of my most worn pieces throughout the last 10 or more years and it still holds pretty well. Fingers crossed it will as time goes on, because it's truly insanely flattering and even after all this time, it always brings me joy. Same goes for a red trench coat (again, ancient Zara) I've had since I was 9 years old and it probably grows with me, because it still fits, albeit after 14 years of intense wear it is now quite battered, so I keep it more for sentimental reasons :D

Beautiful pieces! Would love to know more about those black jackets hanging on the end of the rail! The DVF dress is amazing, and regardless of the length being 'not current', I think it looks fresh, very Italian - and most important - hits you at one of the best spots on your leg. I started paying better attention to this recently with my skirt and short lengths, and I've been amazed at what a difference it makes in my overall outfit. I shop vintage and secondhand a lot, so age-wise, my oldest piece of clothing - that I occasionally wear - is a cotton and lace blouse from around 1910. I have a hand-made, Depression-era calf-length lace dress (I truly believe it was a wedding dress), that I wear sometimes wear for singing gigs (I paid $6 for it, which brings me great joy, and a bit of sorrow that someone's precious dress was disposed of for so little). I have some fur pieces and gloves from the 1950s-1960s, and a couple of my Grandma's cardigans from the 1950s. I wear all of these infrequently, but they do get worn, onstage, and in actual life. In terms of when I purchased the garment, regardless of its physical age... The oldest item everyday item I can think of is a Norma Kamali skirt I bought around 2011 or 2012, that I still wear all the time.

YASSSS!!! My sentiments EXACTLY! Rules around decluttering are not always applicable to every item in your closet. I strongly believe if you love an item and its your style that is your classic piece. Despite agreeing on the narrative around what is "classic", no one should really define YOUR classic if it does not fit into the narrow definition of classic! I can go on but I will stop here :). Great pieces!

I love my older clothes and accessories. Some are even 20 year old or even more, but they are French timeless, chic pieces, great quality, beautiful... and so much better than most of what I see in the stores nowadays. I always take good care of what I have so they don't look old at all, in fact many of these are all the trend again (cotton or silk button up shirts, woollen or cotton knitwear, trousers and skirts, leather handbags, very much like some that are currently all the rage now! So, thank you for this video!!

Hi Alyssa, my oldest pieces are knitwear made by my grandma. She made me an undyed virgin wool coat and a striped long tunic, also wool, when I went to high school and of course I have a couple of cardigans and sweaters from her and I must say that I love them a lot even at the age of 36. By the way the oldest Item is a cardigan, she made it for her mother and I inherited it in high school, it is ca. 40-50 years old. Every time I wear them, I feel the love she made them with and I am sooooo proud of them.

not to mention that dress fits you like a glove!!! another great reason to keep it! I like the high boots idea!! My closet has some ancient pieces..meaning twenty plus years. They still fit well, look great, have had minor repairs, come out at least once in the season and will never leave my side (unless they totally unravel!!!)

Thanks for debunking the theory that we should get rid of something if we haven't worn it in a year. I have pieces that I love, but I may not wear them every year! Still kicking myself for getting rid of a DVF wrap dress that I got second hand BACK IN THE 80s! My oldest piece is a dress that my mother-in-law gifted me about 20 years ago. And I still wear it, but maybe not every year.

Yep I have rejected that dreadful philosophy of that woman it must spark joy, and you must have worn it recently. It's BS and how can you be creative if you're constantly getting rid of stuff? Wasteful and control-freaky. I love experimenting with what I have and like you I have pieces that have lasted decades. Sometimes I change the buttons on a jacket, or take a blouse in, give it darts to fit better or create a riding style silhouette. Not giving in to mass consumption remains a personal constant and I'm proud of it. If I have something out of fashion it goes to the back of the wardrobe or kept in a suitcase, to be brought out in a few years. It never fails!

The clothes I have I usually wear for 5-10+ years. I've always enjoyed playing with my pieces (that's why I was so excited to find your vids), but recently I needed something fresh, something new during this highly restrictive covid time, and I bought a new dress, a skirt and a summer top, and it was so exciting!!! It injected some fun and ignited my creativity, which expanded my wardrobe possibilities to a new level (and made me happier and helped my mental health, ha). I so enjoy your vids, thank you.

Thank you so much for your advice! As someone whose weight has fluctuated with having children, it’s hard to know what to keep and what to part with. I hear “if you haven’t worn it in a year, time to get rid of it” but there are a few things in my closet that I’ve held on to and I’m so glad that I have. (Jackets mostly. I love a good jacket. The other is a purse that my grandma gave me. While it’s not conducive to my lifestyle, I love know that I have it still from her) I think the two oldest items in my closet are a denim jacket that I thrifted when I was 17 in Seattle. Although I cannot close the buttons over my chest, the cut and stretchy denim are super comfortable, and the sleeves are love enough to cover my long arms! The other item is a Fossil crossbody satchel. I had it in college and it could carry everything!

I love the notion that a "fast fashion" piece is only that if you don't keep it and use it. I picked up a Forever 21 black ribbed tank with a lace inset from a thrift shop. I have kept and worn it often for close to 10 years, and it is now becoming too worn (unevenly see-through). The piece which started out as a short-lived trend piece from Forever 21 was classic but unique enough to be a go-to piece in my wardrobe for a decade. So, like Alyssa said about the DVF wrap dress, if it's classic enough to withstand the changing trends, it's worth keeping.

I see the fringe dream skirt is going to be used in your styling, this is so exciting because you know it my favorite of all my favorites I seen on your videos. My oldest pieces are around 43 years old right around when I turned 16. My favorite styling, no surprise is with the fringe skirt. I’m a little rough on my clothes, they do seem to wear down because I get a lot of use out of them. And I do get tired of styles and end of selling them or giving them away. But I’ve learned a lot about why that is from vlogs like this one, and a Small Wardrobe and am making more selective additions to my wardrobe now. That said, I have a pale beige wool coat, very classic, that I bought for $15 as a sample about 13 years ago that I still wear and absolutely love. I always get compliments on it. And the sandals I wore at my wedding, come to think of it! They’re really cute, still in great shape after 17 years!

I have one coat that belonged to my grandmother and one bag from my great great grandfather (almost 100 years old ahah). I adore them (and wear them A LOT)! And they are in good condition too!! But i have lots of clothes with years on them. The only thing that i will buy frequently is: underwear, pants, t-shirts and shoes (the temptation is real). The rest, i will use and reused a lot . I also try to modify an item if i'm getting tired of it, like changing the buttons, and stuff like that :) I also try to take real care of my clothes, air drying them, etc. , so they can last longer! By the way, loved LOVED the video Alyssa, as always!

Appreciate what you said about getting maximum wear out of the fast fashion pieces you already have, I do that as well even though I haven't purchased fast fashion in recent years. re your question: i have old pieces from the 60's through every decade til now. Oldest is either a 60's mustard wool crew neck sweater from my dad that he shrank, or a vintage purchase LBD in incredible shantung silk that's almost like a light wool, which also looks 60s. But my favourite right now is wearing my own 90s pieces and people think they are new 2021 purchases!

Yes! More videos like this, please! Winter, accessories.... Love this. My oldest item is a sweater that was my mother's. I think it is from about 1950. It is a basic ski style sweater that still draws compliments. I have several older pieces from when I was single and had more money to invest in clothing. I just celebrated my 28th wedding anniversary yesterday, so that gives you a hint how old they are! I agree with your assessment, I hung on to high waisted pants when low rise was the rage, and wide legs when skinny was the standard. The only thing that hasn't returned is large shoulder pads -- thank goodness!

I lost a lot of weight about 5 years ago so had to replace everything, so most of my older stuff is gone ( on Ebay and charity shops). I found that even my feet had got narrower and my old shoes were now too wide and slipped up and down on my feet. But I have kept a couple of skirts from my honeymoon in Rome back in 2001. If we ever go back - 25th wedding anniversary perhaps - I'm going to try and get them tailored in and wear them again! They are both the same skirts from Marks and Spencer - a straight style in a fabric which looks a bit like silk with tiny embroidered flowers. One is purple and one is a muted green.

I've gone through a lot of clothes, and the peak of my wasteful habits came around when I was 25... I don't like to pay department store prices for clothes as much as I used to unless I can't find any good options secondhand. That aside, I would say that my Clarks loafers are probably the oldest in terms of footwear. I've had them high school and while you can't see the brand name inside the shoe anymore, they're still holding up strong and are very comfortable! :D
