Styling Secondhand Outfits for Summer 2021 | Slow Fashion

Ciao everyone! Today I'm styling my best secondhand and thrifted finds into summer 2021 outfit ideas. I used summer 2021 trends to inspire a new way to wear old clothes and create new outfits using what's already in my closet. This is so fun if you have a summer capsule wardrobe, minimalist wardrobe, or just want to refresh your closet!
On this channel, I share #slowfashion​​​​​​ and #sustainablefashion​​​​​​ tips that center around how to shop your closet, and restyling pieces you already own. I also spotlight brands that I believe in every now and then. I believe in #creativityoverconsumption​​​​​​, and that we all have the power to be conscious consumers.

Growing up with very little money and a big family, about 95% of my clothing was 2nd hand. As I got into my early teens I always got compliments because my clothes were often "vintage" and I had learned to do (Basic!) Alterations. Nowadays I'd say I still buy about 80% 2nd hand, or get pieces from clothing swaps.

My favorite phrase you use is “I definitely don’t have…” and then you offer us an alternative option and explain why it’s similar to the piece you don’t have. Thanks for helping me think creatively when shopping my closet. Would love a series where you show even just a piece from Pinterest that you don’t have and then pull a few pieces from your closet that could work instead and explain why those options could work!

My favorite second hand find is a vintage camel-colored wool and cashmere coat with silk lining---not summery, I know, but it's a piece that puts a smile on my face because it looks as if it was made for me. I feel so lucky we found each other!

I do a lot of second hand shopping out of season. But actually, my favorite dress is a fitted tea length shirt dress with a wide skirt. It is made out of navy silk. A neighbor had a bunch of stuff she was giving away on her porch and I picked up the dress. I noticed it was hand made and very good material. It needed a bit of loving. The hem wasn’t shortened properly, so I took it back to the original length. It was missing one button which I cannot replace, so I took off the bottom button that no one can really see and sewed it to the missing spot, hand washed it, steamed it, and wore it. Oh my, I feel like a 40’s movie star in it and the silk is to die for! I picked up a navy and white bag on eBay, tied on a navy and white polka dot scarf to the bag, added some jewelry and was like, oh my! Alyssa would so approve!

Great looks, I love a nice blazer look, although Im at my best in dresses. I have quite a few cherished second hand finds. My absolute faves are.. 1. Red Vintage Valentino dress with coordinating cape 2. Fendi spy bag from Ebay that I saved and saved for. I still have and carry 11 yrs later 3. Pink jcrew blazer 4. A DVF dress that I purchased new 10 yrs ago outgrew it, kept bc I loved it so much. Found an exact copy on Ebay last year, took them both to a seamstress and had them make 1 dress that now fits me. 5. Patent leather black loafers

About 70% of my wardrobe is second hand now. I have found so many gems! My favorite is a vintage 70's wool plaid blazer from Pendleton's. It is so unique in the colors and type of plaid, I have never seen one like that before and it still had the tag on it, it was deadstock on Etsy. This is the blazer that gets me the most compliments. Love this video as always. Love the black shorts, blazer and burnt orange bathing suit top, tho not sure the green loafers are a fit with that, they don't seem to connect with anything in the outfit, black sandals or loafers would be better... Finally, I love the striped dress. I personally cannot wait for the milkmaid sleeves to go away as they don't suit my style at all, so I love the sleek, slinky, floaty look of that dress and I don't think we should worry about it not being a hundred percent on trend as it is very classic.

The tip on wearing a 1pc bathing suit like a body suit makes sense because the bathing suit would give me more control and support for my large chest area and I can skip the bra. Those sleeves and hem treatment on the lilac dress is jaw dropping, what a gift. I still stand by a genuine black leather maxi coat that I thrifted for $9 and totally a matrix vibe. I really enjoyed this video and by take away is the use of my 1pc bathing suit to give my shoulders and back a break for wearing a bra. Going to pull them out this evening to evaluate which will work and also start going to the pool. Today I will be wearing my thrifted wide leg jeans with my Dr. Martens I just recently bought. But it's good if you're going to be swimming that day. Also if you're traveling and limited on space - is a good option for a bodysuit in the evening (particularly if your suit has a bit of sheen or is kinda dressy, 1 item instead of 2)

The way I get around it, is pushing the bottom bit to the side when I pee. The strip is usually quite small... or if you have a body suit, you can unbutton it. But whenever I'm at the beach wearing a one piece, I no longer strip. Just push to the side and it works great

I really like your layered sports bra looks! A blazer would be too warm for summer weather where I live, but I could see it layered with an open linen shirt with the right hemline. One of my favorite pieces is a “remade” vintage short sleeve top with a boxy cropped silhouette and mandarin collar in pale blue. I’ve had it for three years and it remains one of my most worn pieces.

I love this! Makes me think of what I have in my closet...my favorite 2nd hand item is a red plaid wrap skirt I bought 20 years ago. As a business teacher, it came in handy...with red blazer, navy blazer, etc. I really got creative with it. Now that I am retired from teaching and mostly work from home, it hadn’t gotten much use. I hope to volunteer at a middle school next year and plan to get it into the rotation 😍

I'd say that a little over half of my closet is secondhand, but some of what I have is fairly new. My most favorite top is this mid-toned striped shirt from ThredUP, and my favorite outerwear piece is an over-sized blazer in a khaki color (I got it from ThredUP as well!). I also love buying my bags secondhand, and so my newest addition is a red, Michael Kors mini bag. I bought it for myself as an upcoming birthday treat! :D

Well, not for a fashion statement, but I get all my gardening shirts from Goodwill. Men's long sleeve dress shirts. I have gorilla arms and I work out in the sun. A shirt like this keeps the sun off my shoulders and neck, fits long enough to cover my booty, has a pocket or two and usually launders like a dream. I've had Nordstrom, Nautilus, Ralph Lauren, Facconable, many high end labels. Also low end, like Kirkland from Costco. If I'm going to shred a shirt working around roses, let it be a cheap shirt!

I always loved the French peasant look of a corset over a Fuller skirt dress. In my mid teens my mom actually made me a corset and nightgown moment that I wore for Easter 🤣 it may have caused a few looks given that this was well over a decade ago, but I still have the nightgown to this day!

Great ideas! My winning consignment find - probably from the 2000s - an Ann Taylor ivory silk satin vest w tiny buttons and dainty elastic loops - stunning embroidery - and a few sequins. It looks almost bridal - but a vest is so easy to dress up or down. Worn once - looks brand new - for less than $9 !!! 1st runner up - an ivory & tan metallic finish skirt - in a subtle animal print! Too cute! Will we ever go to a mall again?!

Love everything you shared! The crop looks amazing on you but I have never been a fan. I would wear short tops but always had an under layer because I am short waisted. My favorite second hand finds 🤔 hmmm my lace up boots for a steampunk feel, my Bettie Paige dress for 10 dollars, and just last month my Chanel style leather jacket with great buttons.
