Excellent video, I completely agree. The problem is, this sums up everything I hate about modern "mainstream" metal. These trends allow bands to write poor riffs, or just write no actual riffs at all (if your riffs look like binary code with a couple dissonant/high notes thrown in, there's a 99% chance it's just uncreative garbage...). It also stifles creativity and makes bands hard to distinguish. In addition, every band is so overproduced and squeaky clean that it completely removes any rawness and heaviness they might've had. Furthermore, every core band feels obligated to use 7 or 8-string guitars without actually justifying it. A riff's "heaviness" isn't solely determined by how downtuned it is. You can play 1-xx-1-x-1-0-0-0 on your downtuned 8 string all day, that doesn't make it good or heavy. Having a few seconds of silence before your "big br00tal breakdown" has been done to death too, and almost no-one utilizes it effectively. That sort of stuff is what I'd call pseudo-heavy. Anyway, that's just my two cents. And keep in mind I'm not inherently against metalcore or deathcore, I listened to it a lot from 2008-2016-ish, but every time I try to listen to new stuff most of it is just uninspired riffless trash. That's why these days I generally stick to underground death/black/doom metal.

I can definitely see where you’re coming from. I think the magic is when bands can take the established trends and introduce their own ideas as well. The combination of familiar and new. 🤘🏻

Ok, so after working out the m2nd harmony, try harmonizing by diminished 5ths. Usually all you gotta do is play your part one string over and one half step/fret up. Works really well with taps.
