First of all, DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME! We wanted to document something that as of now, isn't well documented in video form. The bites are truly not as bad as some people have claimed, but regardless we do not recommend anyone try this at home.

Thanks for doing this! I got bit by one a year or so ago and it was on my finger for maybe two mins before we got it off (now I know their little hog nose can be pushed up to get it off lol). My hand swelled pretty good for about 24 hours. That’s it. I have since regretted not filming it. When people get Hognose snakes and find out they are “venomous “ they always want to know what would happen if they were bit. You are right that there isn’t much video info online about it. Thanks for being a Guinea pig 🐹! Have a great day💜

And it’s important to note the situation! The association was “hey beauty, it’s food time!”, and she did what she was supposed to do. With my snake handling, I’m always following the best practices that I can, establishing threads of trust and doing my best to make it a good experience for my little reptilian friend. I’ve never been bit, I’m not afraid of being bit and I don’t assume I’m ever going to be bit. And this includes encounters with passing by copperheads around where I live, giving appropriate space and not handling wild snakes I have no business handling. Snakes are intelligent, thoughtful, cautious and thoroughly lovable! Thanks for the hit, Kevin! She was perfect and you were just fine. I’m happy to see it!!

This is a cool little series. I think the results of the Mangrove Snake bite were the most surprising. Obviously, it would be more conclusive if this same thing was done on a larger scale (no pun intended) and over a larger population of participants to see if there is more of a range of reactions. That said, for being a set of case studies I think you were smart to try and get a long bite. The real take home is that these aren't really super dangerous animals but it's best to remove them quickly but carefully if they do bite.

So once again, and I sincerely mean this, on behalf of the more appreciative herp world study individuals who coincidentally find these videos during down time moments, I personally appreciate your efforts in starting to document the more "supposedly harmless/mildly-to-saliva-based venomous" species that aren't so mild after all when it comes to actual venom toxicity and the difference between "toxic saliva" and "true" venom structure from a pronounced Du-VOR-knees-GLAND. And especially the western heterodon that has comparable venom components to the Pygmy rattlesnake; seek to verify with the great Bryan Fry. Great video and great job. Please, keep going but keep providing more informative case study info rather same regurgitated bs standard from yesteryear.

Kev! As a snake breeder that lives up near the Barczyk's in Michigan, and breeds snakes, and owns a female falsie thus far, and hoping to go deeper, possibly a male lav, maybe a mangrove or hog before long (boas being my faves), i LOVE and APPRECIATE what you are doing so much! I have been told by another breeder that a bite from a Mussarana won't kill you, but is medically far more dangerous than a falsie, mangrove, hog or any such mildly venomous species. So if you could find a way to do a Mussarana vid that would be super exciting for me! Not even neccesarily another bite vid, even just facts. Also very much hoping for a follow up vid on the albino boa that was surrendered to you if possible! Thanks for all you do for the community. 🐍💚

Hognose seem to be as aggressive feeders as California Kingsnakes. The difference being, the Kingsnakes are not venomous. .. that we are aware of. I’ve never been bitten by either. I’ve had plenty of garter bites, a couple that probably lead to envenomation. No ill effects on my end, other than some minimal swelling. I try not to let snakes hold on too long, but in some cases it was unavoidable. Being that when I was younger, the easiest way to get pet reptiles was to catch your own, I would often go out looking for snakes. One time I was about a mile from my home and caught a larger female garter. I didn’t plan on keeping anything that day, but it was one of the biggest garters I’d ever seen. So I decided, let take her home. With no bag or container, I just held her. Which was fine for about a minute and then she wanted to leave. She bit pretty good and I just wanted to get home. She let off just as I got to my house, probably got tired of her jaws being nearly fully extended. I placed her in a cage I had ready to go and washed off my hands, which she also musked pretty well. The wound bled pretty good, went through a couple of bandaids. After the bleeding stopped, I had a pretty good knot about an inch around the bite. It ended up going out about 3 inches from the initial bite, up to my wrist (the bite was just above my knuckles on the back of my hand). About 6 hours later the swelling was gone. I’m not allergic to bee/wasp stings, so I’m guessing that was an average reaction to garter snake saliva. I’m not sure though. I had a bite from a Timber rattlesnake too, they called it a “mild envenomation” at the hospital. Two vials of antivenin and an overnight stay. The swelling was gone two days after I was released, but it did leave a substantial scar (probably four to five inches across, it’s irregularly shaped so hard to measure). Again, not sure if that’s typical or not. I only have the one bite with no other comparisons. Always enjoy these videos, both educational and entertaining.

Barons racer. I have one and people I've talked to say the venom is kinda strong compared to the fwc and hogs. It's not medically significant. I've never been bit by my barons racer he always wants to race away. He is very sweet.

I liked this series. I get how people think it's stupid but I think it's important to get good info on the worst case senerio

I think so, we have three different t species that have a great deal of “ grey area” involved to a bite. I think we have shown enough to give us a general appreciation.

Not sure if anyone has said this, how are you so damn smart?! Hope this doesn’t offend you but you remind me of my son whose level 2 asd and his knowledge of dinosaurs and animals. You both are absolute fountains of knowledge.

Haaa haaaaaaa. Yeah I’m on the spectrum and was that kid obsessed with animals and bugs. I think we just get that mindset that we absorb things that really interest us. Thank you. I take it as a compliment!

Hi Kevin that hog nose was cute, even though it was trying to eat your finger. It was not going to let go anytime soon. Thanks for the lesson on hognose venom reaction on your hand. Your hand really did swell up. And looked very painful. Goid lesson for hog nose owners. ❤🐍Cindy
