You dont want a cold air intake on a overland rig. If you plan on water crossings, it's a horrible idea. That's probably more ideal for a mall crawling rig.

As for "must have", I agree with tires. Appropriate tread for the terrain is a "must", even if OEM size. The rest is nice to have, but not essential

Of course, as always in the comment sections are people crying about the CAI. We get it. A CAI doesn’t really do much with stock pipes, headers, and without tuning etc. But if you feel like buying one go ahead. Not like you are going to break the bank buying one. That is one of cheapest mods recommended on this list compared to wheels, tires, suspension, roof rack, steel bumpers, and wenches.lol. I put one in mine. It upped my mpg by a little over 1mpg (nothing to rave about) but paired with a Pedal Commander it does sound really really good when you are driving on the highway. It’s your money. It’s your 4Runner. Do whatever you want to it. Nobody drives it but you.

It appears as though you had some type of numerical progression in your mind here, but you're off-base on a number of things. Wheels and tires should never be bought before upgrading your suspension, especially if you're going to off-road or go overland. A good all-terrain tire could do both desert and mountain easily, just choose wisely! You also needed to explain why you don't usually want over a 17"-18" wheel, and that's sprung weight. The more weight the wheel and tire combo, the sprung weight, you have, torque will be lost. Wheels, depending on diameter, width and composition can easily add 1/3 to 1/2 more weight...larger tire and you lose more of the same. But back to the tire size; the more rubber on the sidewall also helps cushion the blow and give your undercarriage more clearance. Another reason you want to do your suspension first is too better judge your needed backspacing, offset and whether you need to go with a BMC (Body mount chop) to add clearance. Your video was really too generic to really be of help, and could definitely lead the average driver or new enthusiast off the correct track to proper modding.

I have a 4th gen. I know the stock exhaust has a resonator and possibly extra cats. I have looked at several diagrams and it seems like no one really knows. Yall have any idea what I can remove from it and still pass Texas inspection? (I know I have to have a muffler and at least 1 cat from each side I’m just trying to figure out exactly which ones I can remove) Also does anyone have any experience with freedom off road lifts?

Indeed, anytime you make a modification that affects air flow, fueling and/or exhaust it's a great idea to do a tune to ensure the engine runs clean and you maximize the performance gains.

@@Motoroso Wrong. Most people are already aware that adding a cold air intake to the 4Runner is pointless unless your just wanting to hear more intake noise. There are plenty of tests out there showing there is zero increase with a cold air intake on a 4runner over the very good stock air box. Please do just a bit of homework before putting out incorrect information. Lots of people come to these channels forgetting anyone can have a channel.

The 4Runner's manufacturer hp rating is 270hp, which is to the crank, so 250hp to the wheels.. Mine was dinonometer tested before installment with stock tires and rims at 248.5hp (so basically 250hp).. After installment i ran 329.7hp to the rear tires.. That is almost 100hp increase to the rear wheels, and the torque also seen a similar percentage increase.. It made my 4Runner daily drivable and now i can comfortably overtake on highways, including on on-ramps.. It also requires less boot to clear certain obstacles off road.. The best part is mpg is only affected if you have a heave foot.. It is not meant to be over powered or win races and just makes the 4Runner feel as it should.. Magnuson made it in collaboration with TRD and it was originally going to be a trim offering, so it built to work perfect with the engine, needs no other mods and doesn't void any warranties.. I love it!

After market air intakes flow better because the intake pipe itself does not have all that swirly crap and pockets before the throttle body that the oem one have. Pipe is smoother flowing thus resulting in better air flow, more efficient, more power. Besides that, it’s still all sucking in air from the same location. Lol

Cold air intakes are an absolute scam, you can’t just slap a nice chrome pipe on your air intake without changing how the engine runs, which’s means to make it effective you’d have to completely reprogram your computer. If you do this crap check where your intake is coming from, stock intake usually have a pipe that goes underneath to the front of the car pulling in cold air from outside, if you have the cold air intake just bolted on under the hood you’re not taking in colder air.

Po Tato Some aftermarket intakes offer higher flow filters, which also outperform OEM filtration levels and filter out more particulate. One example is the Volant intake with the powercore filter. The powercore technology is something they license from a company called Donaldsons, which produces some of the worlds most advanced air filters for commercial and industrial equipment. The factory intake box is a CAI, but it doesn’t flow great because of that huge baffle that Toyota put in it the TRD intake uses a closed tube that allows air to go straight to the throttle body. Prior to installing the TRD intake, I was averaging about 380 miles per tank. After it, I was between 410-420. That’s 20-30 miles more per tank, or roughly a 1.5mpg increase. Nothing to sneeze at.

People gotta stop saying cold air intakes increase air flow. It's just not true. Any significant increase in air flow would max out the parameters of a stock tune and trigger an engine light/poor performance on the engine. Your stock airbox is doing the same thing a CAI does and usually gets colder air because of the ducts they take advantage of vs. the exposed air filter. If you're not getting a tune and a bigger inlet pipe you're just putting an aftermarket filter on

This guy is a salesman. In my honest opinion 4runner is made to cater people who likes everyday driving and adventure. If for some reason you using this vehicle to go off-road as a hobby than yes use the upgrade. The upgrade is only to protect your vehicle and getting over ruff terrain. Stock 4runner is an all around vehicle you don't need the upgrade unless you're a hard-core off-road.
