@@TsukiCove While it's certainly upsetting that whales are being more or less harvested under the pretense of scientific research, I believe that the actual direct hunting/capture of whales by humans might not even be in the Top Five in terms of numbers of whales killed/endangered by outside activities. The first, by a good count, is definitely entanglement/bycatch with whales getting tied up in nets so they are unable to surface, their ability to swim is significantly hampered, swallowed and creating and obstacle to their stomach, or digging in and creating wounds that are are infected/cause additional problems. Humans are just as culpable in these cases, with such deaths far outnumber the ones caused by direct hunting and yet the public is far less aware of this problem and rarely does it get the same headline treatment. It's easy to understand why. We don't have entire animal rights activists following around industrial trawlers, having documentaries made about their efforts to sabotage or even just draw attention to their work like with whaling vessels. Advocating for more sustainable fishing laws in your own country is often very time consuming and boring work where as designating one nation as the "bad guys" is just more attention grabbing. It's just flashier, like a Hollywood bad guy. After bycatch, I believe collisions in shipping lanes is the second major cause, and again this is an issue that the media could easily be raising awareness of. I honestly believe most people would be okay with their Amazon orders taking three extra days because countries start to pass more laws preventing such a high number of large cargo ships from speeding through well known whale migration paths and feeding zones. After that, I believe climate change and pollution are the next biggest culprits. While whaling certainly is barbaric and needs to be called out, it's well past the time when that can be blamed for the current decrease in whale populations. Unfortunately, that damage is done, though the damage we did to generational whale populations during that time is something we're still living with today. If we want to try and help the whales we have now, we need to address the problems that they currently face.

Whales are surprisingly smart they remember individual people and even call out unique calls for them. It's almost like they name people. I doubt whales could ever reach their previous numbers, even if no longer hunted. There’s just not enough food anymore with so many people. I remember an Attenborough quote - “it’s time we stop controlling the environment for the benefit of people, and start controlling the population of people for the benefit of the environment” or something like that. I personally enjoy reading historical whaling accounts. The invention of the steam engine on ships and the mounted guns ramped up the slaughter but before that they didn’t have too much of a dent from whaling. The hand driven harpoons, rowed boats and sail powered vessels were the glory days of whaling. Back when a sailor signed up on a vessel for a whaling voyage and they were gone for years. Crazy. Not just “let’s go out bag us some whales and be home by Friday”, Nup, goodbye my love I’ll see ya in a few years.

The reason why the Right whale is called the "Right whale" was because of it being the Right whale to hunt. - Slow swimmers - Inquisitive, they swim right up to the boats - Don't put up much of a fight when harpooned (VERY different from the Gray Whale, which would attack the boats, earning them the "Devil fish" nickname) - Floats after being killed, which made it easier to bring them ashore for butchering - Offered the biggest amount of whale oil and baleen. Yes, to whalers, the Right Whale was a swimming goldmine.
@asshat1607 Жыл бұрын
Repeating myths again are we? North Pacific right whales often put up a fight, staving boats and injuring men, and did sink on occasion. They never swam right up to a whaleboat to be harpooned. That's completely made up. Bowheads offered the largest amount of whalebone and oil, though North Pacific rights could offer a similar amount. Do more research next time, kid.
