This man is so inspiring. His methods and convictions resonate with me. Long story, told quickly as possible: Two years ago I'd had the worst season of my life. I'd missed TWO good bucks and made mistakes only a beginner would make. Late Dec was hunting a big one I got on camera. Had a chance at him Christmas Eve morn. Screwed it up ROYALLY. Made every mistake in the book. My buddies were killing everything. I was SKUNKED so far. Dec 29 was the last day before the dog hunters would come in and destroy this piece of public property. It was today or never. So I went right into his bedroom. Took an hour to stalk in through shoulder-high sage grass, so thick I had to crawl part of the way and sit on the ground. Five min before end of shooting light he pops into the thicket. He froze instantly. I hit him from 11 yards shooting from my knees. He ran 60 yards and fell in shallow water. When I found him the season's frustrations burst out in emotion, and I sat down beside him in the cold Dec water and cried for ten minutes! A full moon shone large above, stars as far as the eye can see..the silence of the river bottoms...I sat there beside the biggest deer of my life, my hand on his warm body, thanking him, thanking God, thanking my family for allowing me the time and freedom to do this without complaining. Took me and a buddy 3+ hours to get him out. PRICELESS experience, and I'm ever so grateful! Thanks Dan for keeping me inspired!

You are a rare breed, most videos I've watched in past years were probably done on expensive leases or game farms, I've appreciated a guy who teaches instead of entertaining. At 62 I still have a lot to learn but my success has come from lots of hours and trying different spots until I connect, but I'm still nowhere near the hunter that you are Dan. Thanks for keeping it real

I just wanted to say thank you so much for this video I watched this last night before my morning hunt today and I was lacking shooting confidence for this season since I have to wear glasses now but I listened to what u said and I went out this morning and got the biggest buck I’ve ever taken he ended up coming in about 5 yards near my stand and made clean contact on him I’m so blessed from the lord above for blessing me with one of his animals

Thanks Dan! I watched this video a few weeks ago and decided to place a stand in a way too small of a hemlock tree in a really nice spot that I had passed on earlier due to lack of good stand trees. I have also been watching the THP team and decided to buy a ghillie suit to offset my low and rather open stand site. I'm not a newby. I'm 64 and have many many bucks under my belt. Those two little tweaks added to my bowhunting toolbox helped me take a 195 lb 8-point on the first sit in that low-rider stand with my recurve last week. Thanks to you and the THP team for teaching an old dog a few techniques! You guys are to be taken seriously by all hunters of all experience levels.

Superb video I am a lifetime subscriber now after only one video And that coming from a bow hunter with 25 years experience and over 40 bow killed deer. This hunt is what defines 90% of my bow hunting I can usually put myself within bow range of a decent buck can more often than not successfully draw and shoot but have such believably bad buck fever on big bucks at least 50% of the time I flub the shot thankfully only ever hit and failed to recover one buck The rest and there have been many were all clean misses I feel I can learn much from you Mr Infault especially now I plan on hunting public land more often

Thanks for making this video about having a positive attitude while hunting. this is a lesson my dad has been trying to teach me for DECADES now, and it only started to take within the last couple of years. i used to get angry and upset if i see no deer during a hunt, now i am just thankful to be out in the woods and enjoying nature. we all make mistakes but having a good attitude to overcome the situation is whats matters.

Hey Dan, one thing that works good for me in those situations of bare trees is to use a climber stand and sit in it backwards to where your facing the tree and the tree will block you well. Maybe not a 5" diameter one,lol but it works pretty good on 12" diameter tree or bigger cause you can stand sideways and hide behind tree

good video, I moved my stand four times before I got on a nice 8 pointer. I shot a nice doe that evening and a real nice buck the next morning. I learned by shooting the doe, the buck pinned to her will keep coming around looking for her. I agree, keeping every hunt just as exciting as opening day because you never know what's going to happen. if you get down your chance will come as pass you by because you were not ready. Answered prayer is the best for me, I'm the praying type of man and I am feeling very blessed.

Hey Dan I just watched this one and with the early bow season and really blew it on a buck of a lifetime. You’re so right, I’m getting better that’s what I should look at I’ve never seen a mature buck in October while hunting or at least during legal I’ve seen several now the past two seasons and one was seriously my lifetime buck! All pounded public land too. I would really like to thank you for all you and the beast team do! Great positive motivating informative material! I hope you guys have a merry Christmas and I can’t wait to get back in the tree for late season!👍

Also loved the video. It's good to see that even the best of hunters aren't perfect. I scouted my target buck for weeks and finally went into a stand I was waiting to use and shot him. Hit him a little back, probably liver, tracked him over a mile and haven't found him. I felt exactly the same way, did everything right, made what I thought was a good shot, waited several hours to track him and it still didn't work out. Just goes to show how truly difficult it is to kill a mature whitetail buck with a bow.

**update*** I kept at it! Switched to the other side of the tree...stayed until the very last second of last light....and he showed up! I didn't lower my bow too early! I took the shot and thought I missed bc he just hoped a few yards from the noise and stood there looking around. Then after 10 seconds he stiffened up and fell right over dead! Small 6 pt but the best moment of my hunting life of 30+ years!

I missed a big buck last Sunday Halloween weekend an couldn’t make it to my stand i believed i could take a shot from the ground and pull off the correct wind and when the shot came to take everything seemed perfect except for the small buck that spooked the large buck when i drew back that i didn’t see sneak in . My shot from sitting on the ground went from a good 20 ft shot to 34-40 yard shot and i missed clean. The opportunity though still cool t watch a giant from 20 ft

There is only the miss shot between you Dan and that beautiful buck, and this is something that every deer hunter has or will do somewhere along the way, the difference in you Dan and me is , I’ve never seen a buck alive in the 130s and I have harvested over 400 with a bow ,, I am just an uneducated hunter from NC who has never seen alive a big mature buck. And to make things sound even worse on my part , I’ve never crawled in to a stand , with a target deer in my mind, just deer. So I guess it’s true when people say that there is two different animals , mature bucks , and just deer.

@bobbygreen2291

Bill McC no cut that in half , I have hunted with a bow and never even owned a cross bow , for 44 years, I killed my first buck in his bed at 15 years old , a 45 pounds recurve, Ben Pearson , those green cedar bear arrows with a bear broad head and insert, worked very well , and I really don’t mind telling you that I was being conservative on that count of deer , it’s probably closer to 500,, but now i have checked deer in , Montana, Colorado, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, so I got to hunt much more than normal people, probably four or more days a week all my life.

In most cases the only way to move quiet in thick terrain is to walk on game trails. Probably don't matter much cause there probably going to smell you anyway when they come thru after you leave. With that said, I do have a few rare spots that I can come in from a certain direction and be reasonably sure the target deer won't cross my pass cause of an obstacle. When I can I do... But most of the time I do have to walk on game trails.
