Glad you back. Did you consider to burn those stumps? The stumps are rotten and should burn easily. The problem is that it is too close to the house and the combustion can creep through the roots under the house.

@@brainhomestead6 I suppose so. There are several videos on YT on the issue. You will need to light a fire on top of those stumps and allow the combustion to creep down. After the combustion, cover the holes with soil.

@@caotropheus it is only 6’ from the house. That seems too close, but I would rather burn them and save the $150 stump grinder rental if I can.

@@brainhomestead6 once I burnt a stump the old way by just lighting a bonfire on top of the stump for several hours until the top was gone. But I think there are better methods. I saw YT videos people drill many holes in the stump (like 20 mm diameter, 200 mm deep), fill these holes with diesel, kerosene or even used cooking oil throughout several days until the wood absorbs well these fuels. They pore these fuels again and again as long as the wood absorbs them. After this they light some charcoals on top of the stump and it should start burning, a slow combustion that can last for a couple of days . They added more and more charcoal if needed and used some sort of air blower once in a while to intensify the combustion. Check YT videos for ideas. Here you have ideas for other video to show us.

I may have to burn different ones because these stumps are barely 2m from the house so it makes me nervous using that many accelerants. I have a couple that I could burn though that are really old stumps on the property. I’m actually getting ready to start pulling the group of 4 right now. One at a time though.

If you have a set of forks for the tractor, use them to stab into the ground underneath the stump. Don’t try to lift or anything, just go straight in and straight out. Picture what a tree spade would do. Pulling the trees down definitely works, we’ve removed several dozen trees trees that way. Be careful with the leverage, there can easily be over a million pounds of force at the base. It’s simple math if you know how much you’re pulling and how high up the rope is attached.

I appreciate it and hadn’t thought about using forks that way. I’m planning on using my auger and drilling all around the trees and filling with water before I pull them down so it will reduce the pulling force required. I’m also debating splicing my synthetic cables together so I can use a 5:1 or 7:1 system from over 100’ away so I’m out of harms way.

@@brainhomestead6 be super careful with the auger because they grab the roots and look themselves into the ground after they break some stuff. If it does happen you’ll need leave the auger in the ground and get the tractor out of the way. Then use a large pipe wrench or chain wrench with a cheater pipe and unscrew the auger from the ground. A pressure washer works okay for soaking the ground under the stump. Remove the plastic red piece from a zero degree nozzle and work it into the ground like boring with high pressure water. The quick couple will get filled with fine grains of sand and dirt and be difficult to undo. Working the coupler in a bucket of water or kiddie pool helps get the sand and dirt out. It also blast the dirt right back at you so be careful with that.

@@PurpleNovember my auger is a Bush Hog and they had the good idea to put a shear pin on the PTO shaft so the few times it has happened as you said where it grabbed a huge rock or tree root, it sheared the PTO pin intentionally which stopped the auger BUT kept the bit attached so I could pull it up with the auger still attached so I didn’t have to dig it out by hand. I don’t have a pressure washer but I was planning on using 4 hoses going into holes around each tree at a trickle overnight. Also, I’m going to put the ropes around the tree and put tension on it before I start softening the ground so if it does fall prematurely it will be going the correct way.

@@brainhomestead6 sounds like you have decent soil for auger. It’s a nightmare in rock hard soil. If you’ve already pulled the auger up after catching roots than you’re good. In real hard soil it’ll pull the back of the tractor down and three point relief valve can’t always keep up. I prefer clutches over pins in use but not in purchasing. Sounds like you have a pretty good plan. I’m looking forward to seeing it in action!

It did in a manner of speaking. I had 4 vacations in there and a bunch of other stuff that popped up, but I should be getting back into it shortly.
