The original designer understood the Fletcher-Munson curve. The human ear doesn't hear flat. It is more acute to mid frequencies in the 1khz to 5khz range making the low end and high end seem rolled off at lower volumes and the louder it gets the closer your ear hears flat response. That particular Pultec was designed to compensate for that curve.
@Ramen_Sensei10 ай бұрын

@@Rogerthatmusic don't worry, It was such a great comparison with only that apogee downside to mention. Indeed I've tried all these plugin and I own 2 of them. The one I was really interested was the apogee indeed, because I've never demoed. I think Apogee is owed a fair review/comparison. At the first go you had the attenuation at the maximum. When you reset the plugin because of the 'bad sound' you missed addressing the attenuation setting. Maybe that's the default setting (though that doesn't make any sense), so I'm not faulting you.

I think it would have been (possibly more) interesting to see if those boost/cut differences compared to their hardware counterpart. - Is the Software model the same as the hardware? Is it wrong? (Incorrectly modeled? Or Does it match the hardware?)
@Rogerthatmusic2 жыл бұрын
I understand that some people find that (more) interesting. But for me it doesn't matter that much. I care about if it sounds good and if it's useful first hand. Of course it could be interesting with a comparison from a theoretical point of view.
@AutPen382 жыл бұрын
But which hardware counterpart? There have been various revisions to the original specifications, it's an extremely old design, and it's analogue. Each unit has its own character. At least one of the plugin emulations was based on a specific unit that sounded "better" than most other examples because of a unique "error" in the circuitry. The hardware devices are all unique in a similar way to how every Rolls Royce made 60 years ago has its own individual quirks.

If it’s exact, we’ll then haven’t they modeled it correctly? Not hating on you, just want an answer to this seemingly perpetual issue everyone seems to have
@Rogerthatmusic Жыл бұрын
It's just that I like to hear the sound of the plugin and not be fooled by changes in volume. Our ears are sensitive to volume and if a plugin has jus 1db more gan we often think that it sounds "better" but actually it's just louder. Even if it is in that way on the original hardware I would like zero db be zero db in the digital domain.
