Most people don't realize that the Mexico City Mint has a pedigree to rival many centuries old European ones, having been the first in the New World all the way back in 1535.

Back in 1972, I visited a bullion shop in Mexico city and was blown away by the amount of 8 Reales and un Peso coins available for the equivalent of $3.05 each. I ended up with a flight bag full of coins dating from 1829GoMJ to 1909MoGV all in AU to MS64 condition. It was apparently illegal to take these coins out of Mexico, but I innocently went through an unmanned customs at 6am and flew home with them. Sadly, many of those coins got sold in 1980, but I still have the best ones. Subsequently, I have added many BU examples of peso coins from 1920 up to the Libertads. My grandfather, who grew up in Newfoundland, gave me two 8 Reales coins from 1805 and 1815 that circulated freely in that Dominion.

More on these 8 reales libertads please. With so many varieties, and information less readily available, it's hard to know what to look for. I just go by individual coin appeal, collecting different mints, and with cool chop marks. Also like the Spanish 8 reales minted in Mexico.

Thanks for that- do you know of any good references on chopmarks?
@drintall_11.293 жыл бұрын
@@TheCoinGeek Mexican silver coins circulated in China for a long time. Chinese banks want to distinguish between their own coins and other banks’ coins. So, they put chopmarks on coins. If the coin was deposited in many banks. Each bank might put their own chopmark on the coin. That’s why u can find many chopmarks on one coin. These chopmarks usually represent name of banks. So they are irregular. Sometimes they are words, sometimes they are patterns.

@@TheCoinGeek it is actually one of the few cases in which there is no controversy about obverse and reverse as the law clarifies it. In Mexico the law says that the obverse will always show the arma of the country and the reverse will show the year and value, as well as other motives.

Here to let you know that the 8 Reales from 1867 is the first year of the Second Republic since it was established after the overthrow of Emperor Maximillian. The first Peso design is with Maximillian and the second design is the Balance Scale which was issued from 1869-1873

If a collector wants to have fun, start a new side campaign of cherry-picking choice Mexican beauties! IMO Mexican coins are underappreciated and undervalued. The market is so flippant about them, American collectors are mindlessly fixated on silver content. It's only 10% silver (or 72% or 50% or whatever)! And yet the design of the 1957-1967 is drop-dead gorgeous. Mexico's old mint did such a good job striking these coins and it wasn't the mint's fault that the govt kept neutering the silver out of the coins. Mo did an amazing job working with what it had. They're the end of "real money" in Mexico. I like US coins. I've found that Canada is hit and miss, and mostly miss. But Mexico tho...Mexican coinage is a sector of the marketplace that I wouldn't bet against in the coming decades. I think choice Unc Mexican "junk" has got some unrealized pop under it.
