I plant my broad beans (fava beans) at the start of november and they grow over winter to produce masses of beans for the following spring. I agree, the perfume is out of this world, especially when nothing else has blossom! A feast for the bees, too! U.K. 👍

How odd to find this comment❤. I am in Santa Clara County Right now I have several tall stocks, but I am not sure if they were planted too early. They are in the shade but it is starting to get warm, 😢Hopefully all will be ok

I really enjoyed your video. I think there are two more reasons to plant them. number one reason is that they taste great when you peel off the outer layer. We cooked them in butter and added salt and pepper, yum. The second reason and possibly the most important for me is the kangaroos don't eat them. Kangaroos often get into the yard but have not seen them or rabbits eating them.
@EastxWestFarms2 жыл бұрын
Those are very good reasons. Fortunately we do not have kangaroos here. We do have rabbits but they do not seem to be interested on them.

Me too. New gardener and want to learn how to preserve them. I have frozen butter beans just in large yogurt tubs. It seems to work OK and saves the lengthy soaking and cooking of dried beans. I wonder if it is better to can them?

Great video. Thank you. I have only just started a garden this year. I would like to use the fava beans for food during the winter and, of course, as a cover crop. I live in zone 8b. When should I plant these so that they will grow during the winter please, AND do you plant them straight into the soil or start them inside first? Do you inoculate them? It seems difficult to find the inoculant for beans.
@EastxWestFarms Жыл бұрын
I am at zone 8a. For winter crop, direct sow the beans in the ground in fall. I do not inoculate them before planting.

How many times I can cut Fava Bean plant to give to livestock ?
@EastxWestFarms2 жыл бұрын
I never cut the fava bean plants since we grow them for the beans. But we had two deep freezes last winter, the tops of the plants were killed off by the freezes but they recovered very well.
@debbiemills77362 жыл бұрын
I read somewhere that the leaves of the plant are also edible, to be prepared like spinach. Would you recommend eating the leaves?

I have not tried these. They look a little rough for cooking to me. Maybe I will give it a try this winter.
@emkn14799 ай бұрын
I’m going to try growing these from beans I get from the store. Do they need to be the type that retain their peel? I’ve also seen some that are peeled and they are pretty beat up. Not sure if they’d grow.
@EastxWestFarms9 ай бұрын
I never tried growing peeled fava beans, I assume that the germ will get damaged in the peeling process or they might rot in the soil before they get a chance to sprout. Store bought beans work great for us and we never felt the need to buy them from a seed store.
@emkn14799 ай бұрын
@@EastxWestFarms that’s my guess too but I’m experimenting. Peeled is all I could find right away, so I soaked and planted the best looking ones (there were a few that retained the peel) to try it. I need to go to another store. I’m also wondering if variety matters, as I’m in zone 6.
@EastxWestFarms9 ай бұрын
@@emkn1479 does not hurt to give it a try. The good thing with store bought beans is that they are relatively inexpensive. We are in zone 8b and fava bean is our winter crop.
@emkn14799 ай бұрын
@@EastxWestFarms good news-it worked! All but two of the beans I soaked ended up sprouting and I planted them outside yesterday. That’s what I’ve seen recommended for zone 6.

Later fall. It is a winter cover crop for us. The top may die off when there is a freeze but they usually bounce back.
