I’m not sure if it works for others but I don’t do water changes at all and just have a huge clump of java moss and the java moss would flourish I mean like seriously that thing is a nitrogen Absorber,growing out of hand very easily and it gives a natural hiding spot for baby shrimplets they can also graze on the algae growing on the moss and you shouldn’t have any problems with your shrimp colony

IMPORTANT FOR SHRIMP: anyone reading this, theres been a study done on neocaridina and water temprature, they found that 22'c was the sweatspot for getting a good spread of both male and female shrimp, and that having water temprature above 24'c resulted in excessive hatching of males leading to female shrimp death in the long run due eto exhaustion from the males as after one or two generation at hoigher temps the males completely outnumbered the females, in the 22'c tank they had a more even spread of male and female shrimp. HERE is the link to the study www.researchgate.net/publication/322007591_To_what_extent_does_temperature_affect_sex_ratio_in_red_cherry_shrimp_neocaridina_davidi_The_scenario_global_warming_to_offspring_sex_ratio note that they also found that in the tanks where the temprature was 24 or higher the adult shrimp were much smaller. I have done my own experimentation and my cherry shrimp i keep at 27'c are almost all males with only 3 or 4 females out of the 18 shrimp and the adult females are only 1cm long. In my other 2 tanks and my pond outside where the temps range from 20 - 24'c my adult shrimp are about 3cm long and about 45% females, the biggest shrimp are in the pond where the average summer temps are aropund 22'c and winter around 10'c

I’ve been binge watching your videos because you break down complicated information for beginner aquarists to understand and you don’t take 20 minutes to explain something as simple as female shrimp get mated as soon as they molt. A tank with as many plants as possible is always best for shrimp. This way, your tank can handle extra bio-load (more shrimp) and they have tons more grazing area. A simple java moss tank does the job.

If the culled shrimp bred would their offspring have any chance of being a great red color even though they were not? Might have to give them a try but in order to do so I’d have to order them through the mail because my lfs doesn’t sell them

You gave out a lot of great information for anyone to think of the "why's" none berried. It's funny because when I first started keeping neocaridina's several yrs ago I had about 10 shrimp and I never saw any berried and no young shrimplets. It came to the conclusion I only had females. I purchased some beautiful males from a trusted follower on my IG page and a few weeks later started finding Berried females. Before too long my aquarium had a large colony of healthy, beautiful, shrimp 😀

Don’t have BacterAE on hand? No worries! Mark’s Shrimp Tanks taught me to use a coffee grinder where I ground up a power mixture of all the dried food types I had. My baby shrimp have been thriving! Another tip is to buy those instant laser thermometers. That way, you can perfectly match the existing water temperatures during water changes. Great video, AGW. I am in the process of setting up 2, 40 breeder shrimp tanks on a budget. I’m so close to getting my Bachelors in Science. I wish i had more time to interact with the community:(

@cryoraptora303tm2
@cryoraptora303tm2 5 жыл бұрын
In my honest opinion perfectly matching temps between water changes actually harms your colony in the long run. You want to encourage the shrimp to be able to adapt to a change of temperature and get rid of the individuals who are too weak. Small temp changes in things like partial wcs are a great way to do that. Obviously you don't want to change the water by 5 6 7 degrees Celsius, but one or two degrees is probably healthy for them. Considering how many offspring they produce, getting rid of some of the weaker babies is probably not a bad thing and there will still be plenty of surviving offspring anyway. If you condition them right, neocaridinas can be extremely hardy creatures; mine have gone for literally 2 months without a water change and most of their water evaporating away, and while some did die in that period, enough survived to produce offspring and now I easily have 50 adult/sub-adult shrimps and who knows how many babies. A bit of natural selection never hurt anyone ;)

You did a great job, pretty much covered everything. Just need to mention how important it is Shrimp are only added to fully cycled tanks, any shortcuts in this department and you will lose your whole colony guaranteed. Shrimp can handle varying degrees of water quality and temps, but they are SUPER SUPER sensitive to rapid fluctuations of the water chemistry. This is why only 10-20% water change at a time is recommended. Make sure not to have any heavy metals in the water, being invertebrates they are hyper sensitive to Copper and Aluminum. Breeders usually ship out younger shrimp because they are much hardier than the Adults, it would be best if they shipped the babies but they have no color and people don’t want that. Shrimp are extremely vulnerable when molting. Also Shrimp spend most of their time grazing on the Biofilm, also why an established tank is important, yes they eat algae but the biofilm is mainly what they are grazing on. Just to put it out there They directly compete with snails for food, so best not to have any but it won’t hurt your shrimp population in any way.

Dragonfly nymphs will probably only happen in a tank that is outside, so your pond tubs are where they will occur. If you are Tubbing outside maybe think about using strawberry netting on posts over the tubs. They spend two years or more in the water before emerging as an adult.
@GirlTalksFish

False, many live plants are grown outdoors in the summer months, and attract dragonflies, damselflies, mayflies and tons of other insects that have aquatic larvae from all around. Nymphs turning up in aquariums is actually a fairly common phenomena, and I actually had a damselfly nymph or 20 (who knows) find their way into my tank and eat through my guppy fry population. I'm pretty sure I've had mayfly nymphs at some point as well because I had an outbreak of small mayflies on my net last summer. I'm not bothered about mayflies though since they are very benign, don't bother anything living and are usually quite small so they don't activate my entomophobia. Most of the rest are hideous carnivores though that you don't want in a fish or shrimp tank.

@@cryoraptora303tm2 the only way you get nymphs in a tank is to bring it in in nymph or egg form from outside. My information is not false. They do not come in with tap water. You are bringing plants in or water in from outside, to get in that water the adult has to get to it to lay eggs in it. The life cycle of dragonflies, damselflies, caddisflies, Mayflies are well documented, so what outside source did you bring your plants or water from? Only the Giant Damselfly nymph is able to eat young fish, where are you located? I have never seen them you wouldn't have a picture would you? I have studied and captured a lot of insects but I have never seen a giant damsel and I would really like to.

I lost lot of baby shrimp because of a damn dragonfly nymph. by the time i found out many has died. by the way my shrimp were cross breeds between red cherry and blue rilli. They all turned out to be wild type but they breed like crazy. I add indian almond leaves ( Catappa) after soaking them overnight in water. I make shrimp food with boiled carrots and spinach , with a bit of spirulina powder. Blend them together and sun dry them on a flat dish and you can get flake like food. this can enhance their color too. going to give away all those wild type ones and start with red cherries only this time lol.

Sounds like how I found my damselfly nymph a couple years back. I uncovered it when I was looking for a missing guppy. At first I thought it was a mutant shrimp that had just molted but then I realised it looked a lot like an insect. After promptly getting it out, I learned how common it was and how they eat all your shrimp and fish fry (I had lost a lot of guppy fry as well). A couple months after, after not feeding my tank for a few days due to irl constraints, I found one of my black neon tetras surrounded by every other tetra in the tank, and in it's mouth was the head of a nymph. There must have been more that the tetras were big enough to eat.

@@GirlTalksFish I know right, but it might not have been the tetra that killed it. At the time I had two GBRs, so if they got hungry, well they were probably big enough to tear a damselfly apart. I have a feeling the neon tetra just picked up the head in the carnage. If I had a lot more larvae that I didn't find in that time, I can probably thank the GBRs for getting rid of them lol

won't an old stock covering the siphon take care of the risk of siphoning the babies out? do you know if you points would also apply to salt water shrimp? what is a good level of calcium in the tank?
@GirlTalksFish
@GirlTalksFish 5 жыл бұрын
I've tried using mesh and pantyhose to cover my siphon before with some success. I need something fine enough to suck out mulm but not tiny babies (which seem to be < 1 mm in width upon hatching), but haven't hit upon the right porosity yet. Good question about breeding saltwater shrimp... I unfortunately have no idea! I'm sure some of the high-level tips apply (keep water quality high, have a good ratio of males vs females, etc). As for calcium levels, I just researched what top shrimp breeders recommended for GH/KH and found what worked for my tank. Sorry I couldn't be of more help!

Hmm, is it because of overcrowding? Once my colony got to a certain size and I didn't increase the food as much (because I didn't want the water quality to get too polluted), I noticed that breeding decreased. But once I sold a bunch of them, then breeding started up again.

I'm starting to think I just have three females. But I am also reaching the second to third month in which I've had them for, so maybe that's the issue too. I rarely do my water change for their tank too, because out of all four betta tanks, the one they are in doesn't ever look as bad as the other three. I mean, the betta in their tank DOES have the most tank mates (a black khuli, three cherry shrimp, two nerite snails) but otherwise, the only issue with his tank seems to be evaporation of the water. That's it. So I hardly change his tank and just do a quick gravel sweep and let the shrimp play on my hands for a bit. I really hope they start to breed soon though. Might get more shrimp in hopes to increase my odds.
@GirlTalksFish

Another important point is preventing inbreeding. If you don’t have enough money to start with lot of shrimps, say, you can only afford 15 shrimps initially, at least source them from two or three different aquarium stores or breeders. Inbreeding in shrimps isn’t as huge of an issue comparing to inbreeding in mammals. But it’s still a good idea to dilute any potential inherited genetic defects by having a larger gene pool. That will improve babies’ survival heaps.
@GirlTalksFish
@GirlTalksFish 5 жыл бұрын
Interesting! I don't think I've ever heard of inbreeding issues as much with cherry shrimp, but it seems to be the reason why red crystal shrimp are more fragile compared to other species/varieties. It might be a good idea to introduce some new shrimp from a different breeder every once in a while just to keep the genetics diversified. 👍
@Ballacha
@Ballacha 5 жыл бұрын
A Gamer's Wife caridina shrimps are more fragile probably because lots of breeders inbreed them intentionally to get more intense colour/pattern. Neocaridinas are less expensive to so breeders usually make money by quantity rather than quality. But still, it’s never a bad idea to source your fish/shrimp from different breeders.
