@@GirlTalksFish Black Diamond Blasting sand is beautiful & only about $7 for 50lbs. Only downside is you really need to clean it good in hot water, but totally worth it & fraction of the cost of aquarium sand. I think Seachem makes a great product. For those that don't know, Seachem Prime and Seachem Safe are the same thing. Prime is a liquid and Safe is the powder form. Just 1/4 of a teaspoon of Safe treats 300 gallons. I paid under $11 for an 8.8oz container of the Safe through Amazon. For people treating large tanks or multiple tank the powder is a much more economical choice that will last virtually forever (years). You get quantity without sacrificing quality.

@@GirlTalksFish I do have a question. From the videos I've watched on KZbin everyone says it is best to get shrimp locally because they would be used to the water here. I have joined many local fish clubs and we don't have a source of local cherry shrimp and my tank conditions are set up for only that. (My tank has been set up for several months now) What is your best suggestion for a source to start my colony?. I don't want to mess this up. Thank you in advance.

Nice Video. Just a little add from me: Cherry Shrimp can stand a bigger range of temperature. I hold some of mine in 86°F, some at around 71-75°F and u even can bring them in your pond in the garden when the pond dont freeze to the ground... so they can handle 39°F too (but wont breed in this temperature). As allways avoid high temperature jumps on waterchange... but 39-86 °F is possible. And mine works best with black sand 1mm.

With shrimp there's almost no dirt in the tank, maybe juste remove with clip the dead leaves of the plants, and for eventual waste u could use a Turkey Baster, sorry I'm not english I don't know if it's the real term but google it if it's not and you'll see what I mean lol, but I think it could be helpful ! In my opinion, the walstead substrate is the best substrate. It is natural, more close to their natural environment, more healthy for fish, invertebrates and plants. It creates an ecosystem, is cost effective (no root tabs either!) AND no water changes or substrate cleaning.Waste will make its way down into the sand to the dirt and fertilize your plants. It's a win win all the way around!

nice video. always appreciate the info. i wonder if you could help me figure out why my baby shrimp are dying off. i have a 5 month old, 3 gallon nano low-tech shrimp-only tank, set up with some small drift wood & Japanese stones (sorry forgot the name), lots of plants, on a 1/2" bed of aquareon substrate and sand. i started the tank with guppies, then 2 month in, switched to all cherry shrimp. some of the first badge of cherries came home already berried; so slowly a second generation of cherries began to appear. i now have about 10 adult and 20 teenage cherries thriving. last month i introduced some berried blue bolt and berried orange females; i immediately started to see some babies swimming around, however they disappeared after a few days. eventually all the mamas became un-berried; but no babies in sight. the same thing happened last week after i put in some berried blue-blots and rilis; i started to see some babies initially, now they're all gone. there're no predators in the tank. in the past some baby shrimp would travel to the back compartment of the tank where the filter is, though not this time. i'm increasing feeding Bacter AE from 1 to 3 times a day, while adults are being fed Shrimp Dinner and Mineral Junkie once a day. here's the water parameters: ph 7.1, kh 4, gh 12, ammonia/nitrite,nitrate 0, tds 260, temp 72-75. sorry for the long message, any

Also, in Mark's Q&A section, he says "The most common reason why the shrimp aren't breeding is the water isn't warm enough so make sure it's around 24C/75F. The other common reason is you are not providing them with enough protein. Try to feed them a protein food like bloodworms 1-2 times a week."

I love staring at them and their little antics too! Yes, I definitely plan on making more shrimp breeding videos (e.g., sexing, feeding, culling, etc.) but felt that I should break it up into multiple topics since the video was getting long. I haven't heard much about specific sex ratios except "more females than male is preferable" and "if you start with 10 shrimp, you should have at least 1 of each gender to start a colony." :)

Thanks for sharing the video and the helpful tips. You mentioned you add tap water since your water is soft. I live in Los Angeles and don't think the water is soft so what do you suggest I do to provide the perfect water for breeding?
@GirlTalksFish
@GirlTalksFish 5 жыл бұрын
Oh you should be fine then! Cherry shrimp need a little harder water anyway, so I think you're good to go. Some people will go as far to make RODI water for their cherry shrimp and remineralize it to add in the proper hardness, but I personally find it to be overkill since they breed so easily. :)

I have one aquarium with Neocaradina, 10 Ember Tetras, 3 Otocinclus and 4 Dwarf Corydoras, the shrimp population has exploded, I only started with 8! Another aquarium houses 10 Dwarf green Rasboras, 1 female guppy and Neos and again, the population exploded AND the Rasboras reproduced as well, I would not hesitate to keep and breed Neos with any of the above fish though I think the guppies snack a lot. ;-)

I bought a total of fourteen RCS around Christmas. I know I've had four show up dead. But, I'm also very sure that I'm seeing my (at least) third hatching of babies! I dunno where they're all hiding, but there's always some walking around, and at night (dim red light for observation) the babies come out more often. :)
@GirlTalksFish
@GirlTalksFish 5 жыл бұрын
So many babies - that's awesome! I've had at least 1 batch hatch in the last month, so now I'm eagerly waiting for the next berried female. Haha, I get the babies to come out by feeding their favorite foods, but I should definitely try checking them out at night. Thanks for the tip!

@@finickybits8055 Oh I didn't know that! Okay, I thought it would be super obvious and easy to see the berried females. My berried amano shrimp would proudly walk right up to the front of the glass, so I could easily see their eggs. But I'm finding it much harder to spot the RCS by comparison. Thanks for the heads up! :)

I think I saw two last night! Mine seem like they're really cagey about coming out when the lights are on, because as soon as they went off, I turned off everything in the living room and set the tank light to red, and they wandered out. Not terribly surprised.

@GirlTalksFish
@GirlTalksFish 5 жыл бұрын
Just plain ol' black sand from my Petco! It's inert and doesn't mess with pH, KH, and GH from what I can see. People tend to use Fluval Stratum and other activated substrates for Caridina crystal shrimp since they need software water and lower pH. Hope that helps!

I have baby shrimp in my tank and i wonder when will they grow up to full size. you should add black gravel because darker the substrate more red they will become :) and baby shrimp will feed on algae. I have added driftwood with java and anchor moss and they seem to like it.
@GirlTalksFish
@GirlTalksFish 5 жыл бұрын
I believe they reach sexual maturity at 4-6 months, or when they're about 0.75-1 inches long. I just got some more black sand, so I'll definitely be adding it to the shrimp tank. Lesson learned: quarantine tanks can easily turn into permanent tanks. 😂

Is sand a good substrate for cherry shrimp? Also how many cherry shrimp could live in an 8 gallon tank?
@GirlTalksFish
@GirlTalksFish 5 жыл бұрын
I currently use sand with my shrimp and they love it! Food doesn't get trapped between the particles as much, and detritus is easy enough to remove with a siphon. I started off with 10 shrimp in my 10 gallon tank, and now probably have at least 100. Time to start selling them! :)

What is the difference between cherry shrimp and glass shrimp?
@GirlTalksFish
@GirlTalksFish 5 жыл бұрын
Good question! They are different species, where cherry shrimp are from the Neocaridina genus and glass shrimp are from the Palaemonetes genus. Also, glass shrimp go through a larval stage after they're born, unlike cherry shrimp. For more differences on care requirements, check out this page: www.theshrimpfarm.com/posts/ghost-shrimp-care/

Typically all fish will eat shrimp, especially the babies. I heard a talk given by a shrimp breeder, and he said for tank mates, you could try snails, otocinclus, panda loaches, pygmy cory catfish, and micro rasboras. But you definitely need lots of cover or hiding spots for the shrimp, and most likely your yield won't be as high. Hope that helps!

I have a community tank & my guppies breed like mad. I add in the small ones that are to small to ear my shrimp. They help a lot. When they start growing, I swap them out & put them back in the community tank & put about 5 more small baby guppies back in with the shrimp. It's worked for me. I wouldn't recommend loaches with shrimp, they will eat your shrimp & snails, but in my community tank, 55 gallon, I have 3 large loaches & they keep my tank clean!! I love them! Maybe try some really small fish, like neon tetra or something with similar size. Hope this helps! Jesus loves you! ❤

Yup! You can definitely keep them together, but if you want maximum breeding results, make sure you have lots of moss or cover around for the fry to hide in. Or just remove the neon tetras. :)
