For accommodation you can stay in a nice guesthouse with a free wifi and free breakfast so you can save money. I recommend staying near a subway station and away from the very touristy area like Myundong because hotels or any type of accommodations tend to be more expensive and it's always crowded! Hongdae is nice but stay away from the night clubs area you'll bump into a lot of drunk people EVERYDAY
@LordArioh6 жыл бұрын
I just recently stayed across the street of Myundong market, and second hotel next to Hongik Univ. st. I found both areas for a really low price, full of reasonably cheap restaurants. Lots of amusement and fun. Liked it.

For Seoul residents (or if you stay there for at least one month), you can get a 정기 승차관 card if you use the subway everyday. You have to use subway, not buses. You buy 60 rides for about 55,000 won. Less than 1,000 won per ride! If you use at least 44 rides you break even, and it doesn't charge surcharges. It must be in Seoul to use it. If you start in Seoul and land in Gyeonggi, it will charge you 2 rides, which won't be worth it. You can get it at any customer service center at major subway stations. The card alone costs 2,500 won. If you use all, you can save around 20,000 to 25,000 won a month depending how far you go.

T-money is super convenient, you get to pay in the stores as well without having thousands of coins. Perfectly good meal with all included you find about anywhere for 8000KRW, which is kinda super OK for what you get. Avoid seafood restaurants next to the sea, with 6-digit prices. Well, I didn't see the point to pay that much for any kind of meal. Before you buy anything in a gift shop see if you can find it on one of the markets which have literally everything. Tho I recommend to get a couple of reasonable souvenirs as a compliment. In the convenient store you can see a lot of 2+1 or even 1+1 which means you pay for 2 or 1 and get 1 item free. Useful when you're packing up with drinks. Also food is a bit cheaper in a local market which is not one of the convenient store network. In general don't go to save your money, go for experience, just stay reasonable ))

You can go almost everywhere with T-money card. You can use bus, subway, taxi, train, convenience stores, some markets, restaurants and even vending machines with T-money card. And if you are not adult yet, go to convenience store and input your born year and birth day. Then, you can get discount when you use bus or subway. And you can also purchase train tickets. Go to ticket office say your destination and choose the train. I hope you enjoy the travell in s.korea.

A secret to help you save money, which Billy probably knows about but can't mention in his video, is the late night open market. They have an open market that runs from about 10 pm to 2 am. It is outdoors. They sold imitation brand name goods for super cheap prices. So for instance you could buy a Micheal Kors purse that regularly goes for $4,000 for $40. The knock offs are nearly identical. Knock offs are illegal but most Koreans buy them because it gives them the appearance of wealth and status.
@bradaltemeyer44724 жыл бұрын
In the old days you could buy the "seconds" from production failures of sneakers purses and many other "not really fake" fakes- from the real factories making the real merch, but with a defect ,got my first Columbia sportswear jacket under a bridge- and with a production error,,,

my bank said they charge a precentage based off how much money you want. wasnt worth it to me plus my student bank account doesn't have any fees on their end. so my advice is to find a fee free bank or fee free credit card. or a bank that has a partner bank in Korea that you can go to.

You won't get lost... well, you won't get *really* lost. Korea's transportation infrastructure is awesome, so you'll always have a lifeline. Myeongdong is easy to navigate around because it's such a tourist hotspot. Daegu you'll be taking buses there, but there's a separate subway system in Daegu that's really easy to use (super simple compared to Seoul).

where the best exchange rate is/ is a favorite topic for travel because it is always changing- do have some local currency where ever you change it for landing or at the airport (but any major changes find the best rate first) for us here in the USA, we usually ask our bank first, double check what atm network they operate with in the world- and for many countries our best deal is often from an atm, but -always a changing topic for every country.

Hahahaha I tried to ask for a discount in a shopping street area and the lady there got sooo mad at me
@GoBillyKorean7 жыл бұрын
Was it outside? It's common for outside sellers to pretend to be upset when someone asks for a discount. You can then pretend to be disappointed if they say no ("아, 그래요. 알겠어요...."), and when you start slowly walking away it's not uncommon to be called right back for a discount :-)
@나오미-s9s7 жыл бұрын
No, it was in one of those little clothes shops. I turned around and left after a while, but she did nothing. Oh well, I guess there are times when the shop keepers are like that; I found other shop keepers to be more helpful and friendly :D Either way, shopping is surprisingly cheap and good quality in the shopping areas like Ewha and Gosok Bus Terminal, so I was satisfied with my trip despite that experience. I did a lot of research and found out these tips before my trip, but it was good to see it all concisely given in this video, so thank you for it!
@GoBillyKorean7 жыл бұрын
Ah, I see. Those can be a bit harder, because they might be a brand name store and can't offer discounts by their company's policy (depends on the place). For outside markets or anyone with an individual store, it's much easier to get discounts. Thanks for the comment!
@나오미-s9s7 жыл бұрын
Maybe. I do recalling her saying something like "The price is already so low, why are you asking me to lower it more???" But I just took most of it from context, she was talking very fast... Anyway, I can cross off 'getting scolded by an annoyed shop ahjumma' off my bucket list now haha :D
@futurespoon6 жыл бұрын
for the transfer, do you just swipe the transportation card the second time regardless of if it's been 30 minutes or not and the card will "know" if it needs to deduct money? or should you only swipe when you know it hasn't been 30 minutes? i wouldn't want to make the mistake of thinking it hasn't been 30 minutes when it is actually over and looking like i'm trying to get away with not paying ^^;

You can get away with a lot of things if you smile and are friendly. I'd often ask for discounts when in stores that didn't have prices posted (tourist areas), and whenever it wasn't a department store. A lot of tourist areas will purposefully set their prices higher, assuming some people will bargain for a lower price.

Not so much vegetarian restaurants, but many restaurants will have selections that don't include meat. There are a lot of types of Korean food, so you can still get some good stuff.
