I'm a grocery store refrigeration mechanic in Baltimore. I regularly stop at hood gas stations. This is pretry spot on! One thing missing is when you pull up, and there's 10 people hanging out around the door. Now, I'm a 6'2, 200 lbs white boy. It's fun having a crew of dudes staring at you while you walk into the gas station! 😂

I always leave my cars running at gas stations but both my cars are push bottom and I take they keys with me and lock it. I also live in rural Kentucky and the chances of having your car stolen is less than 1%. I've been to plenty of hood gas stations when I used to haul cars to every state. In Charlotte a car full of dudes pointed guns at me. Told me if I wasn't gone by the time they rolled back they would light me up. I don't know if it was cause I was white or what but I bounced immediately.

You missed one that I always saw in both Dallas and Houston. That being the one or two cars that look like they have no place being as nice as they are in a place so runned down. Like $50k+ cars with $10k paint jobs. Parked next to a busted car on blocks. Always on and backed into the parking spot, but you never seen them get out. Any time I see that, I'm like, "Oh, I need to get what I need asap and dip." I've never had a bad interaction with anyone like that, but dood feels safe enough to sit there for over an hr in a car that costs more than most of the houses around here? That is dangerous.

As someone who has worked in shady gas stations and been to hood gas stations, there are some things that need to be clarified. The pump thing stopping every few seconds, turn the nozzle sideways, it's an issue with the overfill thing. Sometimes it's the pump, sometimes it's the handle, sometimes it's the car filler. Either way, turning the pump to the side fixes it 90% of the time as does pumping half speed. The number one sign of a "hood" gas station that I've seen is loitering. If you see people just hanging out seemingly for no reason, it's a shady area. People don't go to gas stations to just hang out unless they're up to something if ya know what I mean. Another sign of a hood gas station is being unable to see into the store from the outside due to all the crap covering the windows and doors and such. The bit about "shady items for sale" is one sign. Things like tube socks, shirts, copper scrubbers, glass "tobacco pipes", etc. If there is the demand, it will be sold and some items are a lot more common in the hood. Hate to say it, but another sign is if the only workers you ever see are from India or Pakistan or similar. They are about the only people willing to work at such places for the law wages they will get for it. There are exceptions, of course, but most sane people and those who value their lives just aren't going to work at some places. Finally, if you pull up to a gas station and your "man this place feels sketchy" vibes kick in, just go somewhere else. Trust your instincts even if you can't figure out why they are screaming at you.

Absolutely right about people selling things aggressively at the gas station. There's a station not too far from me where something is always going on 24/7. I've seen people park at the pump and sell liquor out of the trunk for example. One time I was there and a woman kept trying to sell me cologne I told her I didn't know it, and she raised her voice and said "yes you do" and followed me inside. Also correct for stations selling stuff that their community wants. I've been to one that sells red and bue rags.

Bro, GAS. Man, back in a previous life when I used to be into dope, back before it was all fentanyl, I used to cop at a hood-ass gas station and that place was something else. It was this older white guy that always ran the place but the Puerto Ricans from the block really "ran" the place, if you know what I mean. They must've had a deal with that guy or something but I never felt like asking them lmao. You'd pull up and if they knew your face a dude would run over to your window and ask what you need. You'd basically order like a drive through-give your money and your order to one dude who'd tell you to pull around back, and he'd pull out the Nextel walkie-talkie phone (CHIRP CHIRP! Anyone remember those things? Lmao I'm old as fuck.) then you'd pull around back and pick up your "entree" from someone else. It was honestly pretty cool. Thinking back, I don't think I ever saw anybody actually buy gas there. That must've been 15 or 20 years ago so maybe I just don't remember. I've been off all that shit for ten years now, though, thank fuck. But I'll never forget some of the places I went and shit I saw. The hood is really a whole other world from suburbia.

With driving a truck in 48 states, I've learned to stay focused on my own doings without stopping. I've been approached by almost everything you can imagine, anything from someone offering help up to muggers. People with 20 minute sob stories, dealers, jewelry salesmen, lot lizards, etc will pressure you past your breaking point.
