"Lucas didn't know he'd include them in his prequels." No quite accurate I'd say. I remember Lucas once saying, in the early 80's, (forget if it was written or print,) that Star Wars was a nine episode saga, which started on number four, and it was really the story of R2D2 and C3PO, and they were the only characters who'd link it together. (Of course it's a very old memory, and I was just barely no longer a teen,) I think the reason is Lucas didn't know how Obi-wan would fit in. I don't think he "knew" Vader would be Luke's father, and Leia would be his sister. As always thank you so very much for the video.

I never read Obi wan and R2 as a plot hole. In the context of the timeline it makes perfect sense. Obi Wan was tasked with protecting Luke when suddenly the past turns up on his doorstep. At this moment he's still hoping he can send Luke back to his Uncle and Aunt and keep Luke totally in the dark while he finds out why R2 is here. Very quickly as the story unfolds however that's never going to be allowed to happen and Obi Wan's hand is forced. He does the same later with the revelation of Luke's father. At first trying to protect Luke from the truth before finally relenting when keeping up the facade is pointless.

I always go by the pre-Disney timeliness. So, clones weren't used by the Empire because they were engineered with a shorter life span, and according to the original Thrawn trilogy, subject to clone madness. As to lightsaber crystals, a variety of natural and synthetic crystals were used. Corran Horn used a diamond in his saber, the first known with a white blade, which was built from throttle assembly from a speeder bike.

I guess that the decision behind the dismiss of the clones in favour of “normal” humans is also related to the control of the systems: if a system send soldiers to the empire is loyal and linked to the central power. My theory for stormtrooper armor is that it was designed for riot control, and not direct military combat. With the war over and the Empire in full control of the galaxy, stormtroopers were mostly needed as military police to keep civilians and criminals in line. And the Empire would never expect the rise of the Rebel Alliance, or that the Rebels would have access to military grade weapons and equipment, so the common stormtroopers were caught off guard. This would also explain why the more heavily militarized factions of the Empire, like deathtroopers or the snowtroopers on Hoth, were shown to be much more effective in combat.

Something interesting happened in The Bad Batch a couple weeks ago that I haven’t seen anyone on KZbin comment on but that I feel has strong implications for the universe. A clone is shot and goes down and we assume he’s dead. But then, a while later, he recovers, injured but alive. To me, this demonstrated the clone/stormtrooper armor works but we don’t usually spend enough time around those who have been shot to see them recover. This implies that the armor actually isn’t useless.
@dhorn4005 Жыл бұрын
Aaaah... very different thing clone armour and stormtrooper armour... in old legends; supposedlly; stormtrooper armour was superior to clone armour; able to absorb even direct blaster shots... the energy, however, was disspersed by the armour causing moderate shock that tended to knock out the soldier inside... but in exchange saved his life. According to this version; most of the stormtroopers we see falling in battle in the original triology, are not actually dead but uncontious... but I think this explanation came from a time where dozens of authors in comics, videogames, novels and roleplaying games where writting wathever they saw fit; and Lucas simply gave the OK to everything without thinking that someone should think about unifiying all that mess... Coming back to clone armour vs stormtrooper armour; a common thrope that has endured from old Legens and Disney Canon; is that the Emperor is cheap bastard. I every version we are tolld that the Emperor wasted no extra money in his men during the Imperial time. During the Clone Wars, the Caminoans, the Jedi, the Seante... they put their hart and soul into winning the war; so the clone soldiers where the best trained, the best equiped and the best prepared mother**** in the galaxy... but after the war was over; there was a single man calling the shots: Palpatine And he did not need an army of a million elite soliers leaded by space wizzards to launch suregery precised attacks into a far more superior army in size... he needed billions of zealot glorified goons to police the galaxy. In the case of battles the Empire had to undergo; this time the numbers where on Palpatine's side; and quite frankly; he did not care in the sligthess how many stormtroopers would die in the proccess. So, cheaper armour, cheaper blasters, cheaper ships... hell, even the TIE figther; the iconic starfigther of the Empire was extrmelly cheap to produce; so mutch so that it wasn't even equiped with deflector shields; while the starfigthers of the rebel alliance, like the legendary X-Wing; where state of the art and very expensive machines (bougth to private companies by wealthy Alliance simpaticers like senators Month Mothma or Bail Organa) equiped with everything you could dream in the hopes that even in small numbers; the rebel pilots could achieve victories against the sheer numbers of the Empire... you can even see that after the Battle of Yavin; the Empire saw that been cheap was such a weakness that developed the faster, better equiped and better protected TIE interceptors so elite pilots could actually had a chance against rebel scum Soooo, yeah; clone armour was better made; that's for sure; but even with that in mind; I think is safe to assume that even if it's crappier; stormtrooper armour could still disperse part of the blast and some of the troopers we see falling, may be too bad to continue figthing, but that their wounds would heve been mutch worse if they wheren wearing the armour... ...fun real life fact; in WWI; the british army made an experiment in the trenches; after seen how many soldier where killed by headshots, fallind debree or other major inuries to the head; they estarted using helmets.... under certain time; the british high comand saw the reports, and for a moment believed that the helmets where a terrible idea; as the number of casuallities due to head injuries was FAR worse than before using helmets... upon further inspection though; they realized: yes, wearing helmets mutch more soldier where reported casuallities... but most of them where alive. Concusions, injuries, burns... they where counted as casuallities cause they have to be evacuated to hospitals; but after some days, weeks or months; lots of them could come back; while before using helmets, MOST of the head injuries resulted in death. So even if your armour is not veskar and cannot delfect blasters; if it can make that the number of injuriedd troopers raises in exchange of lowing the death toll, it's still worth it.

For the stormtrooper armor question. Growing up I always believed because they are the bad guys. Now that I am grown up and in the army I truly believe cost effectiveness. The cost to train, arm, armored, feed, equip and pay a single storm trooper must cost quite a pretty penny. Their armor got a few neat tricks but ultimately getting the common trooper killed would cut some slack on the bean counters. The fact that the empire would send the storm troopers to their death on a whim and the fact most troopers were practically homeless and joined for three square meals and a paycheck also deals with poverty and crime on important worlds to some degree.

so, addendum to the empire phasing out clones: in battlefront 2 (the pandemic one not the ea one) there is a mission where youre tasked with eliminating a rebel group of clones on kamino. im very fuzzy on the specifics, but what i do remember is a: the empire planned to at least temporarily use their own revised clones that pulled from more than just jango's dna and b: they phased out the originals due to unreliability, as shown

Regarding Ben not remembering R2.... A stray note from someone who was around back when ESB first hit the screens, and Lucas revealed his grand design: It was always his intention to have R2 and 3PO be the central drivers of the narrative in all three films. What he had not intended was to tie the prequel and sequel trilogies so tightly to the characters of the "middle" trilogy. The continuity would be maintained by the droids, with totally different characters for each trilogy. With only a small chance that we might see Luke as a child near the end of the third movie. So perhaps his original intent had been that there would be no major story arc involving Ben and certainly not bringing him together with the droids in the first trilogy.

Regarding Vader and Tarkin, yes the books and shows try to explain it all; however, when the original film came out, Vader was not meant to be the main villain of the larger story. And at the time, George did not plan for him to be Luke's father. Vader wasn't quite a glorified henchman, but it is pretty clear that Tarkin is at minimum his peer, though probably his superior. In every scene they're in together, Tarkin is the one with most of the dialog and is clearly the one calling shots (especially that little one he ordered lobbed at Alderaan). Heck, even the Emperor is only mentioned once, very briefly, when Tarkin says the senate had just been dissolved permanently. By the time they started work on "Empire", George's vision of Vader had changed completely.

My headcanon about stormtrooper armor was that it turned lethal hits into incapacitating ones. After the battle, downed troopers could receive medical attention and recover. If you get shot while wearing a modern bullet resistant vest, you might still suffer terrible bruising and even broken ribs, possibly taking you out of the fight. Even if you were in too much pain to fight, your chances of survival and recovery will still be a hell of a lot better than if the bullet tumbled through your organs.

Storm trooper armor is not really defensive in design. It serves 2 functions according to Lucasfilm circa 1999. Primarily it is a psychological weapon. There’s a seemingly endless supply, wave after wave, all identical skeletons. It demoralizes the enemy. 2nd, the helmets provide battlefield information in a HUD, targeting etc. The power for this comes from the backpack, which is sleek and easy to not notice. Due to this design, it is an offensive worn weapon and support device, not defensive protection.

Number 8: Attack of the Clones had a few deleted scenes with Count Dooku that would have shown us more. Number 7: in Star Wars rebels Ezra had a energy slingshot it didn't do anything against Stormtrooper armour. Number 6: in the Canon book the lightsaber collection it says the weapon is related to the Jedi lightsaber but is unique in both shape and colour. Number 3: there is also a short story about Obi-Wan Kenobi not remembering R2-D2 in the A New Hope from a certain point of view novel.

The armor is for conventional weapons like knives, spears, arrows, clubs, and bullets. Blaster bolts are like miniature advanced explosive armor piercing RPGs with led tracers, More like gas propelled grenades like paint balls with armor piercing shaped charge explosive pellets. Full load about 200 rounds in a pistol, and thousands in large guns. Like real armor it's hot or cold depending on the environment. But the helmet provides cold or warm air to breath so the trooper could control his body temperature. That's what the breathing tubes in the helmet are for. It has vents in the tubes that can be opened or closed depending on the needs of the trooper, and the conditions, and to conserve power in good weather. The surface area of the lungs is so large, hundreds of square feet, the heat transfer that way is far more efficient than our LCG garments that inefficiently attempt to cool astronauts by cooling the whole skin of the body. Quite comfortable that way. Even in the hottest desert it's like being in a warm bed on a cold day. In the cold it's not as comfortable, and the user needs to wear additional insulation garments on it. The advanced high capacity batteries allowing the small high torque motors in the air conditioners make it workable. It may be possible to make real storm trooper armor on Earth now. I just use a small ice box, and fan in the fanny pack to cool the air tubes to the helmet in my costume armor.

The Obi Wan/Artoo and Tarkin/Vader relationships were confusing because Lucas hadn't yet fleshed out the characters at the time of A New Hope. He hadn't even created the true relationships between Luke, Leia and Vader yet. I've seen Lucas and others talk about it. It wasn't until the success of the first Star Wars movie and Lucas was given the green light to do the sequels that he began expanding the characters. Lucas didn't know if Star Wars would ever go anywhere.

George Lucas wrote an outline of 3 plays with 3 act’s each in the early 1970’s. The details were not completely filled in but a great deal of the story remained unchanged. For example Ankin Skywalker, which the last name was Starkiller, but he was the chosen one. He started with the middle story. Which is why on the second issue of Star Wars to theaters in 1978 he added episode 4 A New Hope. The Empire Strikes Back from its first release in 1980 has always started the opening crawl with episode 5! He always hoped he would one day complete his story…..

OK...here's the thing about armor...all kinds of armor. 1. If you hit anything hard or fast or repetitive enough, it will shatter...including bulletproof glass or vests or helmets...etc. It's a misnomer. 2. the real purpose of anything "bulletproof" is to protect against shrapnel which kills more than actual bullets. So, stormtrooper armor will shatter from an actual blast, but not from a side blast or ricochet, etc. 3. It is designed to intimidate. There is a reason they look like skulls.

Our impressions of the galaxy are distorted by the story's focus on heroes. The VAST majority of people in the galaxy never leave their home planet. Most of those who do have weapons very often have slugthrowers (like our modern firearms), which do NOT penetrate Stormtrooper armor very well. And when they DO have blasters, the standard blasters only barely match Stormtrooper armor. Most of the heroes and Rebels have modified and enhanced blasters made to penetrate armor.

What has always irritated me and I have never heard an explanation was Vader's suggestion to turn Luke to the Dark Side to the Emperor instead of killing him. With the prequels Vader would have known about the rule of 2, and he would have remembered how the Emperor turned on Dooku to get him as his new apprentice. So how can Vader get Luke to turn without sacrificing himself? If he is willing to sacrifice himself to save his son did he just turn to the light side? Shouldn't The Emperor have known he was in danger to put Luke and Vader together knowing Vader rather die than Kill Luke?
@inf3rnal_embers1452 жыл бұрын
Vader's plan, as he told Luke, was to rule with just the both of them like father like son. This becomes apparent in certain scenes in Return of the Jedi in which Palpatine is trying to get Luke to strike Vader down.

You have one million plus individuals to armor, arm, and care. You want the best armor available. That costs credits. So, you study the best armor money can buy. You outfit the SpecOps with that and leave the standard forces with a mid grade level of armor. ST Armor did not suck. it outfitted them with a way of absorbing energy hits. It enabled the ST(s) to take a hit. In some ways, it is similar to the Edwardian Armor (the first two layer steel armore). Edwardian armor centered on one set of steel breastplate and a second steel breastplate. The first plate slowed the velocity of the (then top of line) rifle. The second plate then absorbed the remaining energy. Historical pictures show a clean hole through the 1st plate and a dent in the second plate. ST Armor is similar. It has a plastoid shell (in which a bolt will penetrate) the second skin (is supposed to absorb the energy) The helmet is the technology of the armor. It has so much electronics that if a trooper removes it - it stops working and ceases to be functional. As I understand, ST Armor can seal in space and provide some time for rescue (not that the Empire cares at that point). For a mass (and I do mean mass-produced) armor, it is appropriate for the job. Remember that the Imperial Army was never designed for front line military use. It was designed to keep the citizens down and terrified. Part of the psychological effect the Empire wanted was a death like visage. Also (unlike the Clone Troopers) no special adornment was allowed. Clone Troopers were designed and trained as front line armies (with the ability to think out of the box). A Galactic empire can not afford to put the absolute top of the line armor on standard troops.
