The best advice my father gave me before he passed away was: If another person can do it, so can you. If you put your mind and heart into it, everything is achievable. 💖

@@_DaMan_ it's true advice. just got put your mind to it. you can do anything. The key phrase, "mind to it". if you are able to conjure up a goal, which you are passionate about or a thing you enjoy than you are very much capable of becoming an expert at said thing.

Summarised: 1. Find your Passion 2. Set Realistic Goals 3. Find a mentor/role model. 4. Dedicate your time and effort, practice regularly and never give up. 5. Get feedback. 6. Reflect on your accomplishments to adjust your courseway.

One of the hardest things for me is reflect the accomplishment I've had in my past and is so easy let those fly by without noticing and its really important to acknowledge and celebrate them, that can give us more motivation to keep pushing and never give up! Celebrate, even when the achievement is small!

As step 9 I would put: Teach what you learned. Tell someone about it, record a video about it, write an article. Don't just take notes, but write out how the conclusion four yourself from this personally. This will make it stick a lot more!

These are all great points. However, another point I would like to add into this list is that, if possible, you should be practical and try to pursue something within a niche in which you have less barriers to entry in becoming an expert at. I say this because finances and life situations are very real indicators of how you will be able to pursue your goals and dreams. In my own life, I went through my undergraduate years passionate about mathematical physics and studied all the way up to algebraic geometry and string theory to prepare for a research career. Sparing all the details about my life story, I came to a point where my situation dictated that it was impossible to get into a phd program. Long story short, I pivoted into a career where I became an expert in a niche subtopic (did everything that was in this video!) that makes use of my mathematical background, and it has been the best decision of my life. I share this here because I started watching this channel with both joy and trepidation as I graduated from my undergrad math career. 3 years later and I feel like I've made the right choice to pursue my career because, as I continue to further my career and make wise financial decisions, I now have the option to go back to graduate school in the future and continue my paused dreams, or continue on in my career. So to anyone watching, making a decision on what to pursue in the future, please take notes from this video because these are all the steps you really need to become an expert in something, but also try to be practical with the path you choose and be open to opportunities that are not in your immediate sight!

Follow your Passion, but also be open to finding your Knack. Theoretical Physics is my Passion. The Four Food Groups of Physics are my favorites: Classical Mechanics (chaos), Electromagnetism (RF/microwave Engineering & Plasma Physics), Quantum Mechanics (atomic spectra), and Statistical Mechanics (condensed matter physics). However, my Knack is in the realm of Experimental Physics and Test Engineering. I learned that about 35 years ago. Follow your Passion, but don't be surprised if you come across something that you're better at than what you're passionate about.

I recently got my hands on James Stewart’s book on calculus. 9th edition of the early transcendentals version. I also got “How to Prove it” which was one of the books you recommended before. Going to be spending my summer going through as much as I can without overdoing it. In final week of pre calculus right now, I loved it. I’ve seen math videos on calculus before and I’m super excited to learn it. I’m not sure if I’m weird, but when I look at a complicated calculus problem I think it looks very aesthetically pleasing and it adds a bit of desire to learn it.

Thank you sir. I learn mathematics and programing on my own, mostly for fun, but now looking forward to add those as skill point in my carrier. The frustration, the grind, all are very tough to endure. Realistic motivational videos like this actually helps a lot. BTW, it took me a full year to complete Howard-Anton's calculus book. I still go back to that book time to time. But the most important thing I learned from HA Calc is not claculus, its to trust in time and effort.

in order to become an expert in a technical field it takes several years of artfully directed dedication (controlled madness) as well as the random factor of being given the opportunity by employers/life to work consistently in the specific area. long term goals help but not as much as being persistent enough to overcome the numerous adversities that will show up along your arduous way.

Amazing points as well just to add to what you said I feel like most people think they dislike math and science when they haven't really got a true feel of what it truly is so I think its important that especially if you are younger you give your self some time to truly try out few different paths and then decide on what you like.

I love learning new stuff, I'm currently learning Calculus, Latin (as a third language), guitar, and after Calc I'll learn Physics (CM to be precise) next. For Calc, I do a lesson (average of 4-6 pages with exercises) every day and for Latin I do a lesson every other day. If I think about it now, I feel like Its kind of hardcore lol but I can do it. I have a lot interests, mainly the natural sciences (Maths, Physics, Chemistry, etc.), linguistics, and music. Having a seperate time for each subject helps me learn a lot in a day, plus having small breaks (read: Playing) is enough for me to drive my way to the finish line. Cheers!

Salute. I took a calc course after not having a math under my belt for 8+ yrs. I was failing the course and had to drop but I'm trying to pick math up again here and there and this is months later. I can't give up though because I've always seen math as something scary but it's understanding the basics and applying previous knowledge then when you get to calc it's logic on top of the basics. It's a huge challenge when you don't have math basics even as a logical person 😬 good look on your adventure 🫡

I once was made fun of during a linear analysis class and it hurt so much that I left math kicking and screaming. I took a semester in philosophy and found it perfect for my interest. I know that passion is probably the most important thing, but it also comes when studying stuff. I loved math but I got to love it when I studied it and the same with philosophy. Quitting your passion is not a destruction of who you are but a birth of new possibilities. Never ever give up!

Also, to add on to your remark about how sometimes there isn’t a lot of information on the internet about particular exotic ideas in a field. You know you’re on the right track in your progression to an expert when information gets more and more scarce and you are required to talk to experts in order to gain the desired knowledge.
@worldnews1545
@worldnews1545 Жыл бұрын
Hoomans don't share exotic ideas , atleast they never share anything in straight forward manner.. they will probably give hints.. Because 1) working on something builds multitude of skills and builds character (reaching peak of Himalayas by helicopter vs reaching the peak by climbing with gear facing deadly atmosphere +the adventure experience ) 2) they want to filter out lazy impatient , weak ,who are not persistent , have low self-esteem and not confident..( those are traits of one kind of people based on psychology ..*forget it..) , the only source to find information is books , articles , scientific papers , lecture notes , for example you read some xx book you got an idea the author in last page gives reference to other source book and author names of that idea sometimes they just write a name and nothing.. (quick tip : if you are going through e book you probably have the opportunity to use key words to search certain things you want or keys words that are closely relate to your need ) you can even use Wolfram database , etc to find more keywords tags .. END... it's tempting to get a quick solution , if your idea has something to do with your promotion and assuming that you are the only greedy human in your office you share it with your colleagues they might give you a quick fix.. Ideas are like guns they can protect you , when you give it to others entire picture changes and moreover damage is not limited just to you.. With knowledge comes power with power comes responsibility..

if you are really motivated about something, at some point you will simply realize that you cannot live without it. I would say this is similar to falling in love, you simply don't see yourself without that particular element in your life and by "in your life" I mean everyday of it, thus it will inevitable become a thing you do everyday out of necessity. You sit constantly to work on that or dedicate time to work on that and you will internalize that the work and the effort you are putting into it is now simply a part of you that you are not willing to let go of, no matter what.

There is this specialty called Mixture Experiments, which is an extension of Response Surface Methodology which is an extension of Design of Experiments. All this is high level statistics for R&D which for college level you never see any of this. Long story short, in less than 90 days I had to learn to program in R from scratch while also learning how to statistically analyze mixture data, and at the same time report everything in something called "shiny dashboards". Fast forward 40 years there's a ton of material. Combine it with R and in under 5 minutes you can calculate the components of variance for validation trials of analytical methods. Residuals analysis is the core of it all. After that, perhaps some machine learning to train an algorithm to distinguish between homocedastic and heterocedastic data after an Ordinary Least Squares regression to train the algorithm to perform a Weigthed Least Squares instead. Also in under 5 minutes. But training your algorithm will take a while. Lots of fun

This step by step effort can be applied to anything. You can change out step 1 with "Recovering from Trauma" and follow the rest of the steps, and it still applies. It's thoroughly logical.

I am 25 and I got a degree in petroleum engineering. I would love to study math in Germany, I hope it is not late to start learning and going deep into a new major.

Persuing your passion is an individual effort. One could become an expert with experience. Age may not necessarily add your experience. Value your time;mind your business.

I use to had a problem what my passion should be. There were so many options but so little time. Then the realistic question was, 'Can I deliver a minimal viable product from what I just learned?' It's not just about being passionate; can you learn quickly and apply it effectively to achieve your goals? Is not about MATH, CHEM, PHYSICS or Computer Science. It was can you learn them quickly and apply them in real life project? You can learn and learn and learn infinitely and know so much but if you can't deliver it then you are just another stupid computer.

I am a retired Engineer. I ask myself so many things to learn, but the subject you learn i ask what are you going to do with it. I developed a passion for physics. For example I learned special relativity. I asked myself what practical application I can use this for. Is our understanding really just limited to Math . In short I struggled with it in its application side. You can say I found not even one application I could come up with. I tried to learn General Relativity, understood the math, got completed defeated in trying to really understand gravity. I mean not the Einstein way but a totally different way. I got destroyed again. Physics involved too much math, most of it I understood, but could not find answers such as gravity , concept of time etc. I thought of a revolutionary way for interstellar travel but the text books really failed to teach the subject. This was not like this say in Fracture Mechanics. It has wide applications. Text books do a fantastic job if you want to apply it. I think in the area of physics the science becomes math heavy but fail to put a physical meaning to it. So your passion can lead to dead end sometimes.

my problem is, i studied molecular bio before transitioning into (straight out mathematical, not bio-) statistics in my masters (and hopefully for phd). because of this, while i perform as good as most statistics graduates, everybody looks down on me because of that background. i think my mathematical sense is good, at least in my field, and i try to develop it more and more. i try to close the gap between an average math graduate and me by studying it on my own. but many people act very discouraging, as if i missed that train long ago. just wanted to share it with you and the community, as you are a very considerate educator (and the people here as well). is it really gone? should i go back and study math at an undergrad level? i realized that (applied) math was my passion very late.

The best advice I received was to have a goal in life then, whenever a decision comes up, take a step toward your goal. This worked just fine for most of my life until I attained my goal! Now what should I do? Bucket list?
