Learning how to assign tasks to others and to delegate effectively is vital if you want to lead and manage others. I take you through 8 steps to delegate effectively.
To progress a career in management, constantly improving your delegation skills so you and your team become more and more effective at delivering the right tasks and projects is a must.
Before planning how to assign work to team members, it is important to be clear what you should delegate and what you cannot delegate. I list out 5 types of tasks that you should consider how to delegate to employees. All tasks core to your management job should not be delegated to team members.
When thinking about how to delegate work, think about the strengths or each team member and try to match up tasks with who is best to do the task. In practice this not always possible so increase the effort put into other steps to compensate.
Before delegating work, plan out what goals you need to be achieved by the person doing the work. Define these goals clearly and then communicate the goals to the individual or team. Then everyone understands what is expected and for when.
I always find with effective delegation, that explaining the context or the why the task is being delegated helps the individual or team complete the work more effectively. Understanding the context also helps with motivation and buy in.
If you want the team member to succeed, allocating the right resources is a must. You can often split resources into essential ones and nice to have ones that mean the task or project is completed quicker, cheaper or better.
Part of learning how to delegate is know when you can leave the person to complete the work and when you need to help. If you are at all unsure, stay involved in the progress of the work so you know how it is progressing and can help as needed.
I would always recommend following up regularly, so you know the project is on track.
Effective delegation nearly always includes some aspect of coaching and mentoring and certainly includes plenty of useful feedback. If you want your team members to improve, for the team to get stronger and for you to have good succession planning in place, then coach, mentor and provide specific feedback often.
And finally, take the time to praise good results. Positive reinforcement really does work and everyone likes praise. Follow these 8 steps and you will improve how to delegate effectively.

hey, i've started a podcast and i am starting to delegate tasks to others to allow me to release more consistently and this video has been so insightful! didn't realise there was so much more to delegating than just handing off work and hoping for the best!
