NEVER accept a counter offer. They will screw you later. Count on it. With the right skills you don't need to give ANY notice beyond today is my last day. Never tell an employer why you are leaving or do an exit interview. Employers don't like to get fired but they would fire you with no notice on a Wednesday at 3:30 PM if it suited their purpose. NEVER NEVER NEVER quit a job unless you have another job locked up or have amassed what I term as F.U. money. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS keep building your skills and be searching for your next potential job. A backup plan lets you sleep soundly at night. Never have your heart so set on something that you wouldn't accept something better !

Why is it bad to tell the employer why you're leaving?
@samb92512 жыл бұрын
I live the UK. I followed your steps and downloaded your resignation letter template. The class was oozing from my letter and after 5.5 years of working for this company I knew they would not be happy about my decision to leave but I thought they would be gracious and respectful. Boy was I wrong!!! The response from my Area Manager was more prickly than a cactus to say the least. I had some extra days that I accrued but not yet redeemed so I used those as part of my notice period which meant I only needed to work 3 weeks notice (my contract stated I have give 4 weeks notice). Their response was to tell me if I have found another opportunity and want to start immediately, they would be happy for me to leave immediately without working the 3 weeks notice. I accepted to leave with immediate effect. The tone of their communications to me was colder than an Alaskan winter. That was something I did not expect and honestly has left me kinda delicate because I put in some mileage for these people and made them some heft coin. Anywho….onto better things but one thing I have learned, no matter what NEVER bring sentiments into the job. Strictly business!

Hello ,Sam that type of coldness I could feel from here,it makes you wonder how people can just view a person as enemy of state instead of being gracious and respectful after 5.5 years. Strictly business! I honestly look at your situation ,myself and really anyone that works a company,owners will replace us without thought if it helps the bottom line,so no sentiment.In the end you know you,no explanation needed ,I wish and hope you are on a good path.

Excellent video! The process to resign starts long before the final resignation takes place. Fortunately I never had to deal with a counteroffer - agree that it should be turned down because the mind is set to move on at this point. I was also never asked to the reasons "why" I wanted to leave - I turned down upfront exit interviews which I highly recommend to ignore if asked to do. But I had supervisors who pressured me verbally to tell them where I will go. I calmly told them that I am not obliged to do so and did not give in. It is possible that they then cut you off from internal servers and files in the remaining two weeks of notice - fine, this is their weak attempt to put last pressure on, and I simply accepted this - I left with class. I left by not even telling colleagues where I went next - made a clear but polite cut. I highly recommend to leave silently and being less visible to peers in the last 14 days in the old job to avoid any kind of reasoning to be seen as bad-mouther. Another important thing: Focus own mindset on time to come and what happens next. Don't vest more energy on what bugged you in the last job, this is a closed chapter now.

The Friday before you give your resignation take all your personal items home. Be prepared for them to just let you go when you give your resignation; they will not want you potentially destroying files or anything else similar. If you really do not like the employer just walk out and I say that as a business owner. Companies want two week notices and it is a joke. NO employer gives an employee two weeks notice unless it is required by law such as the WARN act.
@stoweby Жыл бұрын
I have always given 2 weeks with the exception of my last employer. Every time someone put in their 2 weeks they were told to leave immediately. You should not put yourself in a position where you have no income for 2 weeks out of courtesy when you have seen that they would not do the same for you.
@PhantomDetectivesLLCАй бұрын
Two weeks is a courtesy not a requirement. There is no law that says you have to give notice.

Just accepted a job offer for new employer. However, they will initiate the background check now. When should I tell my current employer that I'm leaving? I just want to make everything is fine on the background check. I have nothing to hide but I just want to be extra careful just in case something comes up. I don't want to be a scenario where I told my manager I'm putting in my two weeks but then the background/employment check comes in and doesn't work out.
@andylacivita2 жыл бұрын
Excellent question. You wait until the new employer gets back to you and tells you your background check is a greenlight. Then and only then do you let your current employer know you’re leaving. And, do not let your new employer force you into giving a shorter notice because you’re waiting on a background check. Good luck!

Andy, most, if not the majority of, large corporations do not give live job reference checks. In most cases, it’s a 800 number you call to verify employment, and it’s a recording that verifies dates of employment and title, but it's not a live person to answer questions. You might have those one-off small companies that do it, but it's very rare these days.

I'm working for a toxic boss in a team that I am not involved in anything except for being expected to document after things have already been finalized. I can't invite myself to be more involved because I don't know where in the process I am supposed to be involved. I am hired as some sort of expert and should ideally be informed about things and consulted where appropriate but I should not have to invite myself. My boss is very difficult to work with. Many people avoid her if possible. I am now in the process of deciding how to get the hell away from this person and find myself in a situation where I am involved in the day to day work in a natural way, so that I know what is going on and how to be of assistance without having to guess my way or ask random people about things.

I gave my two week notice letter in writing and the manager only seemed surprised and angry (not upset or disappointed) that I was leaving. This is pretty much my situation right now with the company I work for. The culture, team, and management are awesome, but my current position turns out to be a poor fit. I'm struggling to meet and maintain production standards due to my condition. I don't get to take advantage of my strengths. I'm forced to use my weaknesses, so I had to submit ADA accommodation paperwork. I've been in this position for only four months, and I want out already. I'm just too physically and mentally exhausted. I just don't have time and energy for job searching, networking, etc. I don't even know what career path or industry I want to pursue anymore. The Great Resignation has hit the publishing industry hard, with editors being totally fed up with exploitative labor practices. The editorial side of publishing is technically a white-collar sweatshop. On the other hand, the distribution end of the publishing industry-where I am right now-is straight-up grunt work a.k.a. manual labor, but it pays better than junior-level or midlevel editorial positions. So as much as I want to quit, it's hard to leave my current position and company because of the decent benefits (since day one of employment, and I want to use my dental insurance because I'm dying to get braces or Invisalign!), the pay (pretty decent for an hourly entry-level position), the steady work, and the great people I work with. I have yet to find a publisher- and author-facing position (a salaried one at that) in the company that would be a good fit. The available salaried positions so far are marketing, sales, and customer service, just to name a few, which are . . . meh.

Within 2 hours of a call conversation we worked out a 25 % salary increase with the upper management . This was well over the offer from the competitor and had recently gotten some boots on the ground feedback about the new role I was going to be taking. My answer is no. I want to grow and progress in my career. I’ve learned everything I can in my current role (for the most part), and there is no room for growth that I am interested in. There is no other position I’m interested in. I love my boss but onwards and upwards!

I’ve made the decision to leave my Company after 24 years. The Company hasn’t been profitable in the last 5 years. They had 3 major layoffs, leaving the company with 4 employees left. They are constantly cutting cost within the company, but it’s not enough. They recently had to cut my pay , cut my hours to part time and is no longer giving PTO for the remainder of the year. This is a hard decision for me, but the future of the Company doesn’t seem stable. I am looking for a new job and I will give them 2 weeks when I do find a New job. 😢

18:00 if you are in the US... by law you can basically leave instantly... as it is a work on will culture... Do you really think they will be nice enough to give you a 2 weeks layoff notice...? give me a break!!!

"Resignation" letter is a thing of the past. It has a defeatist, servile, subservient odor. The word now is "termination" letter sent by worker to employer ending his/her services. The power imbalance between employer-worker is shrinking. That's progress. Giving "notice" is not necessary. In U.S. states with "at will" clauses, both the employer and employee can terminate the arrangement without cause, without notice. I've done it myself with no repurcussions.

Question. If is a case of workplace mobbing by both coworkers and bosses) to bully a person out of their job. No notice required?

About to resign with no new job lined up. The contract mentions 60 days, however I can only give 30 days notice for medical reasons. Afraid that anything could be used against me in future job opportunities….more worried after listening to some points raised in this video. 😢

What should I do with my PTOs before resigning? Would that affect my notice period?

They will likely pay you for those. However, you need to check your company’s specific policy.

So I actually accepted a counter offer, because just after I signed into new job, I was being kicked out of my flat as landlord was selling, so was poor timing to go into new job, and move. Got the counter offer, which meant promotion, additional salary, and for the last 5 months being given many opportunities and soon another promotion as I have been leading lots of new initiatives. However. I am about to quit again, this time, because of all of these opportunities and experiences, I have landed a dream job. It feels a bit rude, but the last 5 months, had allowed me to skip another stepping stone job. Very awkward quitting. I enjoy my job, however my day to day responsibilities do not give me fulfilment. it's easier to quit, if it was a toxic environment!

After going through an interview process and talking about salary and getting an initial offer that's way too low, how would you answer the question "what's the lowest you can do?" That question always makes me feel bad because they just want to do the minimum... I watched your "How to negotiate a lowball salary offer" and I think I know the answer. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think I should have just walked away because they're basing the salary off the position, not my skills and abilities.
@andylacivita2 жыл бұрын
My friend, my answer would have been, “Thank you. Thank you for being so clear you a company who focuses on the bare minimum, which means we’re not a fit for each other.” I would have needed a shower after they said that to me. You’re with so much more. And I’m not even talking about money.

You are so right, my company giving jobs to 3th part , rather than giving me a rise or more extra hours, it's not even cheaper for them because do a crap job , and when we get the cars back from them , they put it to my board straight as a next to do..so they want me to do anyway..idiots

With the job sabotaging me and not knowing who it is coming from (seemingly 3 different people) and the culture of coworkers bullying and cut throat behavior, no counter offer would suffice. Not even money. I hear that it is not just my department but other departments. It is the company culture before I started 4 months ago. I called out 2 bullying coworkers and being retaliated on. My team lead is doing nothing to my direct bully in my department. I will hear in 2 days if I got a job I applied for with a $1 per hour pay cut to get out from under a toxic environment that is giving me so much stress that it is negatively affecting my ability to get all my work done. Focus is just not there.

I just got an unexpected job offer I am eager to take. I had a planned vacation next week for two weeks. Should I resign before my vacation, then work 2 weeks after to move my projects to the next person, or resign right when I get back and work two weeks after. (I definitely don’t want to give my two weeks and have those 2 weeks be my entire vacation!)

The thing is, that my boss lied to me (the right word is gaslight). I feel so betrayed that even though everything else is ok for me in my job, I do not know how can I work (and respect) someone who does like that. It was a very bad situation and to tell the truth, I do not want to wait for the next time. I do not trust her anymore. It is otcabout liking her ornot, she lied, tried to fool me. In my opinion, it is very bad basic to create anything together.

Even if you give a two week notice your former employer will lie about you. I know from personal experience. My former employer committed fraud against me by editing my resugantion letter and sent it to my next employer in which I already received an offer of hire and my start date. I then received notice that they recinded their offer. After hiring a lawyer he found this out. But then the company never fired the supervisor who did this.

so...the problem with quitting a bad job and treating them like they treat you is they hold an unreasonable amount of sway over your career despite not being a part of it anymore. It's essentially the threat they are capable of ruining your life beyond your employment period which is kinda sad we hold companies opinion on a pedestal. How is this any different that a social credit score in China?
